«Redacció» de Quim Monzó, i dues de les seues versions cinematogràfiques

2002

The author analyses the parallel components of the brevity parameter between the written and the film narrative, and, at the same time, the languages autonomy that each one involves, starting from the specific performance option in two versions of the tale Redacció (‘Composition’) by Quim Monzó.

Aspectes formals de les preposicions en català

1995

Studies on the prepositional category generally cover its syntactic and semantic aspects. Phonological aspects are usually reflected in a peripheral way. In this article we propose to study some of the phonic features of Catalan prepositions from the point of view of Cognitive Grammar, and try to establish to what extent these are exclusively phonological facts. Specifically, we shall study the atonicity of the most prototypical prepositions, the exceptional accentuation of prepositions, the so-called contractions of prepositions and articles, and the a/e and a/ad alternations in Northern Catalan and colloquial Valencian, respectively.

Analogia i canvi morfològic : a propòsit de les formes verbals velaritzades

1995

An important series of verbs of the second conjugation exists in Catalan, characterized by a velar obstruent between the radical and the inflectional affixes. This velar segment, which in modern Catalan acts as an extension of the radical, has a heterogeneous historical origin. In short, in certain cases it stems from the strengthening of the glide of the Latin strong perfects in -UI (where w > gw > g); in others, it is justified by the maintaining of the final consonant of the radical in certain forms of the present in verbs such as dico or stringere (DICO > dic, DICAM > diga ...); in others, finally, it is due to changes of a purely analogical nature. In order to explain the l…

La llengua al nord del País Valencià

1999

A review of the various sub-dialect classifications of Catalan in the north of the Pais Valencià, together with a proposal distinguishing northern Valencian, with two subdialects, and southern Tortosí in the eastern border with Catalonia, provide an introduction to an elaborate summary of the main dialectal research on the area. This is followed by the features characterizing these subdialects and a description of the area involved. There are seven phonetic phenomena: an unpalatalized production of /tS/, the survival and loss of intervocalic /d/, the opening of initial /e/, the disappearance and survival or/r/and some plosives at the end of words; in addition, the paper contains six section…

Variació i estàndard

1998

The nature of linguistic variation is governed by the character and the scope of the networks of interaction, and the frequencies and intensity of communications inside those networks. Standardization, in a complete sense, represents a substantial modification of the conditions of interaction: basically, it expands, structures and consolidates the communicative network. The spread of the standard variety thus acts on the initial conditions, modifying them significantly. As a referential model, the standard reduces geographical variation, imposing specific limitations on the maintenance of forms which are restricted geographically and which have attained social prestige. Standardization also…

Els derivats d'Esse i Stare en les llengües romàniques

2001

This paper presenta a contrastive analysis of the Romance verbs derived from ESSE and STARE. The lexical and syntactic characteristics of these verbs in Latin and their locative and atributive uses clearly contrast with actual Romance uses. This contrast highlights the variable extension of the verbs derived from STARE assuming the space of those derived from ESSE.One extreme of the clyne is represented by the Hispanic languages (i.e., Spanish, Portuguese and Catalan), which have developed more uses and thus extended further the STARE forms. On the opposite extreme, there is French, which has no STARE uses. In between, there are Occitan, Sardinian, Italian and Romanian, which include some f…

El nou diccionari normatiu de la llengua catalana

1994

This article describes the process by which the Nou Diccionari Normatiu de la Llengua Catalana (NDNLC) has been made; this dictionary brings up to date and regularizes Pompeu Fabra’s Diccionari General de la Llengua Catalana (DGLC), which implies, on the one hand, adding to the dictionary new words brought about by different social habits and by the progress of Science and technology, and, on the other hand, bringing the contents of the dictionary up to date. This project has been carried out in three different phases. The first consisted in creating a general Computer data base (BDOL) which contains, besides the DGLC, words belonging both to the common language and to specific fields; in t…

El llemosinisme valencià a la darreria del segle XIX

1991

As this paper tries to show, the association between the terms Catalan and llemosí, traditionally used in an indiscriminate way when mainly referring to Catalan, was clearly revised and corrected by the middle of the 19th century both in Catalonia and the Balearic Islands, but not so in Valencia, where its persistence can be seen as the clear expression of an outstanding form of local particularism vis à vis the raising linguistic Catalanism.

Contacte lingüístic entre el català i el castellà a la València dels segles XVIII i XIX

1996

Joaquim Martí Mestre studies several phenomena of linguistic contact in the valencian context of 18th and 19th centuries, such as linguistic interference, code switching, code mixing, as well as the problem of the functions, conditions and sphere of use of the languages, Catalan and Castilian in this case, and linguistic attitudes and social values related to each language in contact.
