Spread of franchising: a multinational comparison based on the notions of innovation diffusion

Investigates the globalization of franchising through a discussion of the literature on innovation diffusion. Proceeds then to evaluate the globalization of format franchising in 31 countries, drawing data from Arthur Andersen’s multi‐national study. Finds that the USA has the greatest number of franchisors and franchisees, Japan seems to have a different franchise structure when compared to the other countries studied, and Israel is a franchising novice. Large‐scale set partitioning problems: Some real‐world instances hide a beneficial structure

In this paper we consider large‐scale set partitioning problems. Our main purpose is to show that real‐world set partitioning problems originating from the container‐trucking industry are easier to tackle in respect to general ones. We show such different behavior through computational experiments: in particular, we have applied both a heuristic algorithm and some exact solution approaches to real‐world instances as well as to benchmark instances from Beasley OR‐library. A general framework for the analysis of fiscal equalisation systems

2003

This paper shows that, despite the existing diversity of models of fiscal equalisation, there is a common underlying structure that links all of them. To this end, a framework of analysis sufficiently general so as to encompass the main schemes present in the literature is developed. This allows to uncover the common features of these schemes and to identify more readily the origin and nature of their differences. The formal approach is complemented with a numerical simulation of the models considered. The paper also shows the usefulness of the approach for reform policy and suggests two new models.

Structure and Evolution of a European Parliament via a Network and Correlation Analysis

We present a study of the network of relationships among elected members of the Finnish parliament, based on a quantitative analysis of initiative co-signatures, and its evolution over 16 years. To understand the structure of the parliament, we constructed a statistically validated network of members, based on the similarity between the patterns of initiatives they signed. We looked for communities within the network and characterized them in terms of members’ attributes, such as electoral district and party. Not all bull and bear markets are alike: insights from a five-state hidden semi-Markov model

2022

This paper employs the hidden semi-Markov model and a novel model selection procedure to detect different states in the US stock market. The empirical results suggest that the market is switching between five states that can be classified into three bull states and two bear states. The three bull states are categorized as a low volatility bull market, a high volatility bull market, and a stock market bubble. One of the bear states represents a regular bear market, while the other one corresponds to either a stock market crash or a market correction. Some past and present challenges of econophysics

We discuss the cultural background that was shared by some of the first econophysicists when they started to work on economic and financial problems with methods and tools of statistical physics. In particular we discuss about the role of stylized facts and statistical physical laws in economics and statistical physics respectively. As an example of the problems and potentials associated with the interaction of different communities of scholars dealing with problems observed in economic and financial systems we briefly discuss the development and the perspectives of the use of tools and concepts of networks in econophysics, economics and finance.
