Implementation of green harvesting in the Sicilian wine industry: Effects on the cooperative system

2015

This paper contributes to assessing the effectiveness of the GH measure to contribute in reducing the supply of wine grapes, and thus contrasting the fall of wine prices in those years when especially abundant productions are expected. By analysing the application of this measure to the Sicilian wine sector during the three-year period (2010–2012), we assess its effects on the regional wine cooperative system. The results from the analysis of the statistical data show that the GH measure was successful in terms of the number of applications, the supported area and financial expenditures, and contributed with other factors to determining a reduction in wine grape production. The empirical su…

Old wine in new wineskins? Understanding the cooperative movement: Catalonia, 1860-1939

2020

Different factors have been proposed to explain why in some regions there is a greater tendency to form cooperatives. The debate remains open. In this study, we look at the spread of cooperativism within Catalonia from 1860 to 1939. Catalonia was not just the leading industrial region in Spain but also where cooperatives first emerged and had a greater presence. In line with the existing evidence, we find that cooperativism spread from coastal municipalities to the hinterland. In particular, it seems that local conditions (literacy and social capital) facilitated this process, while accessibility to the transport network and neighbouring effects also played a significant role. This work was…

Wine Tourism and On-Site Wine Sales

2013

The concept of oenotourism first appeared in the 1980s and was really developed in the 1990s although action relating to this type of tourism and vineyard visits had already begun to take place in several viticultural regions. One dimension of wine tourism is linked with the organisation of trips and the reception of visitors. In this aspect, France became a pioneer when the first Route des Vins was created in 1934 in Burgundy, followed by the Routes des Vins (wine roads) of Alsace and Champagne in 1953. This model was adopted and enhanced in Europe, followed by other great viticultural regions of the world, in particular the United States (Robert Mondavi’s objective was to educate the publ…

A review of Devenir Soi by Jacques Attali: through the lenses of liberalism and Buddhism

2015

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to reinterpret Attali’s worldview through the lenses of liberalism and Buddhism by mobilizing the relevant literature, beyond the mere book review. This paper is an essay based on the book “Devenir Soi” by Jacques Attali, published in France in 2014. These analytical grids were chosen, because freedom and self-realization are two themes that pervade the book. Design/methodology/approach – After presenting the book structure, the objective and the methodological approach, we uncover Attali’s interrogation, namely how to free oneself from the omnipresence of evil, the withering away of the State and growing xenophobic populist self-entitlement. We make …

The circular economy model in the socio-economic systems of the wood industry : the case of the Tomsk oblast

2021

Using the Circular Economy (CE) model appears to be today a means more and more employed by organizations and public policies to overcome the problem of waste and bring it to a new stage of progress: the one of sustainability. If the issue of diagnosis and the need for a transition to CE is generally no longer discussed, the question of its implementation is all the more so, especially in Russia. Depending on the type of economic sector and the territory considered, an CE strategy cannot be viewed in the same way. Whether in terms of natural resources, labour or capital, different economic factors are brought to interfere in the search for circularity and sustainability. The objective of th…

Children’s art: Work or play? Preschoolers considering the economic questions of their theatre performance

2011

During their theatre project, a group of 6-year-old children tried to pursue the role of active actors, decision-makers and producers. For them their theatrical activity was viewed as work, despite the fact that adults tend to count it as play. Children were also eager to earn from their performance. Money was a sign of appreciation and status, and it determined for its part children’s position as genuine actors in an artistic project. The article considers whether some of children’s activity could be understood as work.

HOW TO MAKE A PIE: REPRODUCIBLE RESEARCH FOR EMPIRICAL ECONOMICS AND ECONOMETRICS

2020

Combined People Position and Compass Detection for Context-aware Service Provision

2006

A novel technique is discussed for people identification and position sensing in augmented reality by the use of two cooperating technologies. People are provided with RFID tags for localization and context definition, and then visually investigated for identity checking and compass detection. The two technologies are discussed within an implementation of a case study dealing with context aware service provision for students in a campus.
