What Was Synthetic Biology?

2014

The desire to make life is not new. Mythology and history provide numerous examples of this Promethean longing. Materialist and evolutionist scientists over a century ago were convinced of the possibility and even the need to synthesize living beings to advance the knowledge on the nature and origin of life. The premature synthetic biology attempts by Stephane Leduc and Alfonso L. Herrera reflected the mechanistic ideal in biology of Jacques Loeb. The book “La biologie synthetique” by Leduc (1912) clearly defines the efforts of these pioneers: “Why is it less acceptable to seek how to make a cell than how to make a molecule?” Journalists have presented many advances in biology in the past c…

Historical buildings: luminescence dating of fine grains from bricks and mortar

2010

In the framework of a research program aimed to define the chronology of the structures of the architectonic complex of San Francesco alla Collina (Paternò, Italy), two luminescence dating techniques were applied: Thermoluminescence (TL) on terracotta bricks and Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) on mortars. Dating a historic building through the age of its bricks can be sometimes complex, for the possible gap between the age of the bricks themselves and that of the structure. Considering that the laying of mortar is contemporary to the construction, the principal objective of the work here presented is the verification of the possibility of solving chronological uncertainties of speci…

Quasi-Conformal Technique for Integrating and Validating Myocardial Tissue Characterization in MRI with Ex-Vivo Human Histological Data

2017

Ventricular tachycardia caused by a circuit of re-entry is one of the most critical arrhythmias. It is usually related with heterogeneous scar regions where slow velocity of conduction tissue is mixed with non-conductive tissue, creating pathways (CC) responsible for the tachycardia. Pre-operative DE-MRI can provide information on myocardial tissue viability and then improve therapy planning. However, the current DE-MRI resolution is not sufficient for identifying small CCs and therefore they have to be identified during the intervention, which requires considerable operator experience. In this work, we studied the relationship of histological data (with 10 \(\mu \)m resolution), with in-vi…

Porte e finestre di Tarquinio Ligustri e la loro fortuna nella Sicilia tra Seicento e Settecento

2013

Il Libro de catafalchi, tabernacoli con varij disegni di Porte, fenestre et altri ornamenti di Architettura…, published by the famous Roman printing house “alla Pace” of Giovanni Giacomo De Rossi, is a collection that summarizes the contributions of various authors and engravers and was elaborated between 1667 and 1691. Eight engravings depicting new models for doors, windows and ornamental motifs, which were related to the drawings kept at the Kunstbibliothek in Berlin, have recently been attributed to the well-known painter of Viterbo, Tarquinio Ligustri, through the comparison of an engraving kept in the Biblioteca Estense in Modena, autographed by Ligustri and published in 1596. Strong evaluation without sources : on Charles Taylor's philosophical anthropology and cultural moral realism

2003

Kanadalaisen filosofin Charles Taylorin teorioihin perustuvassa väitöskirjassaan Arto Laitinen esittää, että inhimillinen toiminta, identiteetti ja persoonuus perustuvat ns. 'vahvoille arvostuksille'. Filosofisesti vaati…

Overview of first Wendelstein 7-X high-performance operation

2019

Abstract The optimized superconducting stellarator device Wendelstein 7-X (with major radius , minor radius , and plasma volume) restarted operation after the assembly of a graphite heat shield and 10 inertially cooled island divertor modules. This paper reports on the results from the first high-performance plasma operation. Glow discharge conditioning and ECRH conditioning discharges in helium turned out to be important for density and edge radiation control. Plasma densities of with central electron temperatures were routinely achieved with hydrogen gas fueling, frequently terminated by a radiative collapse. In a first stage, plasma densities up to were reached with hydrogen pellet injec…

Study of High-Temperature Behaviour of ZnO by Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics Simulations and X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy

2021

Wurtzite-type zinc oxide (w-ZnO) is a widely used material with a pronounced structural anisotropy along the c axis, which affects its lattice dynamics and represents a difficulty for its accurate description using classical models of interatomic interactions. In this study, ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) was employed to simulate a bulk w-ZnO phase in the NpT ensemble in the high-temperature range from 300 K to 1200 K. The results of the simulations were validated by comparison with the experimental Zn K-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectra and known diffraction data. AIMD NpT simulations reproduced well the thermal expansion of the lattice, and the pronounced …

Radiation-Induced Stable Radicals in Calcium Phosphates: Results of Multifrequency EPR, EDNMR, ESEEM, and ENDOR Studies

2021

This article presents the results of a study of radiation-induced defects in various synthetic calcium phosphate (CP) powder materials (hydroxyapatite—HA and octacalcium phosphate—OCP) by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy at the X, Q, and W-bands (9, 34, 95 GHz for the microwave frequencies, respectively). Currently, CP materials are widely used in orthopedics and dentistry owing to their high biocompatibility and physico-chemical similarity with human hard tissue. It is shown that in addition to the classical EPR techniques, other experimental approaches such as ELDOR-detected NMR (EDNMR), electron spin echo envelope modulation (ESEEM), and electronnuclear double resonance…

Annihilators of tensor density modules

2007

Abstract We describe the two-sided ideals in the universal enveloping algebras of the Lie algebras of vector fields on the line and the circle which annihilate the tensor density modules. Both of these Lie algebras contain the projective subalgebra, a copy of sl 2 . The restrictions of the tensor density modules to this subalgebra are duals of Verma modules (of sl 2 ) for Vec ( R ) and principal series modules (of sl 2 ) for Vec ( S 1 ) . Thus our results are related to the well-known theorem of Duflo describing the annihilating ideals of Verma modules of reductive Lie algebras. We find that, in general, the annihilator of a tensor density module of Vec ( R ) or Vec ( S 1 ) is generated by …

A basic analysis toolkit for biological sequences

2007

This paper presents a software library, nicknamed BATS, for some basic sequence analysis tasks. Namely, local alignments, via approximate string matching, and global alignments, via longest common subsequence and alignments with affine and concave gap cost functions. Moreover, it also supports filtering operations to select strings from a set and establish their statistical significance, via z-score computation. None of the algorithms is new, but although they are generally regarded as fundamental for sequence analysis, they have not been implemented in a single and consistent software package, as we do here. Therefore, our main contribution is to fill this gap between algorithmic theory an…
