Cultural heritage vestiges represent complex physical systems, able to interact with the environment through continuous exchanges of heat and fluids (water, air). In this wide context, particular relevance is assumed by transport phenomena and diffusion of pollutant, vehiculated inside the considered structure by water itself. Interaction mechanisms can be considered at various observation scales, depending on the material provenance and on its geometry and location. Abstract In this research, plasma electrolytic oxidation coatings were prepared on AZ31 Mg alloy in a silicate-based solution containing K2TiF6 using bipolar and soft sparking waveforms with 10, 20, and 30% cathodic duty cycles. The coatings displayed a net-like surface morphology consisted of irregular micro-pores, micro-cracks, fused oxide particles, and a sintered structure. Due to the incorporation of TiO2 colloidal particles and the cathodic pulse repair effect, most of the micro-pores were sealed. Long-term corrosion performance of the coatings was investigated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy during immersion in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution up to 14 days. The coating grown by t…

We report the infrared activity, in the spectral region of the OH stretching modes, of different composite silicate glasses whose chemical composition is established by X-ray fluorescence measurements. The analysis of the absorption line profiles is made in terms of different spectral contributions, Gaussian in shape. The comparison with analogous spectra obtained in vitreous silica samples with impurity concentrations < 100 part per million moles is evidence of the effects of the different oxides on the vibrational properties of the OH groups. In the past years, a great deal of effort was put into research regarding Indirect Immunofluorescence techniques with the aim of development of CAD systems. In this work a method for segmenting HEp-2 cells in IIF images is presented. Such task is one of the most challenging of automated IIF analysis, because the segmentation algorithm has to cope with a large heterogeneity of shapes and textures. In order to address this problem, numerous techniques and their combinations were evaluated, in a process aimed at maximizing the figure of merit. An analysis of the electronic properties of amorphous semiconductor-electrolyte junction is reported for thin (D ox < 20 nm) passive film grown on Nb in acidic electrolyte. It will be shown that the theory of amorphous semiconductor-electrolyte junction (a-SC/EI) both in the low band-bending and high band-bending regime is able to explain the admittance data of a-Nb 2 O 5 /El interface in a large range (10 Hz-10 kHz) of frequency and electrode potential values.
