Acetaminophen Use During Pregnancy: Effects on Risk for Congenital Abnormalities

2008

Udgivelsesdato: 2008-Feb OBJECTIVE: We evaluated if acetaminophen, one of the most frequently used drugs among pregnant women is associated with an increased prevalence of congenital abnormalities. STUDY DESIGN: We selected 88,142 pregnant women and their liveborn singletons from the Danish National Birth Cohort who had information on acetaminophen use during the first trimester of pregnancy. We used the National Hospital Registry to identify 3784 (4.3%) children from the cohort diagnosed with 5847 congenital abnormalities. RESULTS: Children exposed to acetaminophen during the first trimester of pregnancy (n = 26,424) did not have an increased prevalence of congenital abnormalities (hazard …

Mucormycosis in a healthy elderly patient presenting as oro-antral fistula: Report of a rare incidence

2015

Mucormycosis is a rare opportunistic fungal infection that commonly affects patients who are immuno-compromised. It invariably presents as an acute spreading infection, with very poor prognosis if not treated promptly. We report a case of mucormycosis in immuno-competent elderly patient, presenting as oro-antral communication. Patient’s history, clinical and laboratory evaluation revealed no systemic predisposing factors. The disease was non-fulminant, localized and showed remission after local measures, without parentral anti-fungal therapy. Key words:Mucormycosis, maxilla, elderly, oroantral communication.

Ultrasound in children and adolescents with inflammatory bowel disease

2014

The term Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is used to describe several idiopathic gastrointestinal disorders; among these diseases, the most commonly encountered in clinical practice are Crohn’s Disease (CD) and Ulcerative Colitis (UC). CD and UC are different both in distribution of gastrointestinal tract involvement and depth of inflammation. 25% of patients reveals IBD during childhood or adolescence. [1] No consensus exists regarding the optimal techniques and imaging modalities when evaluating IBD, especially in the paediatric age. [2] The correct imaging choice often depends on clinical presentation of patients. The most common situations are: the initial diagnosis of suspected IBD; pa…

Urethrocutaneous fistula repair after hypospadias surgery

2003

OBJECTIVE To evaluate and compare the success rates of simple and layered repairs of urethrocutaneous fistulae after hypospadias repair. PATIENTS AND METHODS The charts of 72 children who developed fistulae after hypospadias repair were reviewed; 39 had a simple closure of the fistula, whereas 32 had a 'pants over vest' repair, in all cases after excluding an impairment of urine outflow. RESULTS The success rate at the first attempt was 74% for simple closure and 94% for the layered repair; at the second attempt it was 80% and 100%, the difference being statistically significant for both repairs. CONCLUSIONS Although probably far from an optimal technique for repairing urethrocutaneous fist…

Recurrent Meningitis Associated With Duane Syndrome Type 1

2012

We present the case of a 17-month-old male patient with a bilateral Duane syndrome type 1 associated to unilateral cochleovestibular dysplasia, perilymphatic fistula and recurrent meningitis. Diagnosis was carried out by MRI and CT scan. His management and treatment are described, as well as the postoperative evolution. We believe this is an exceptional case due to the low frequency of this syndrome, as well as to the otoneurological complications.

Pneumatoceles and pneumothoraces complicating staphylococcal pneumonia: treatment by synchronous independent lung ventilation.

1993

A 54 year old man with a staphylococcal sepsis developed staphylococcal pneumonia complicated by multiple pneumatoceles and bilateral tension pneumothoraces caused by bronchopleural fistulae. Excessive enlargement of the right sided pneumatoceles and a tension pneumothorax not improved by drainage led to mediastinal shift and compression of the right lung. Reversal of the mediastinal shift and closure of the bronchopleural fistulae was achieved by assisted independent lung ventilation.

Strategies for endovascular aortic repair in aortobronchial and aortoesophageal fistulas.

2013

Objective To report our experience of thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) for acute bleeding originating from the thoracic aorta in patients with aortobronchial fistula (ABF) or aortoesophageal fistula (AEF). Patients and Methods A total of nine patients (three woman) were treated from September 1995 to March 2012 by TEVAR for ABF (n = 5) and AEF (n = 4). The implants (N = 14) were introduced with fluoroscopic guidance via the aorta (n = 1), the iliac (n = 2), or femoral (n = 11) artery, respectively. Results All aortic lesions could be sealed successfully. Perioperative morbidity was 0% in the ABF group and 50% (2 of 4) in the AEF group and no procedure-related morbidity was noted …

Endovascular treatment of acute bleeding complications in traumatic aortic rupture and aortobronchial fistula.

2001

Objective: Herein we report our experience in placement of endovascular stentgrafts in the descending aorta in patients with acute bleeding complications due to traumatic rupture or aortobronchial fistula. Methods: Six patients (one woman, five men, mean age 47 ^ 19 years) were treated from September 1995 to February 2000 by implantation of endovascular stentgrafts in the descending aorta. Indications included traumatic ruptures of the aortic isthmus (na 3) and aortobronchial fistulas (na 3). All procedures were performed under general anaesthesia. The implants were introduced under fluoroscopic guidance via the aorta (na 1), the iliac (na 4) or femoral (na 2) artery, respectively. Results:…
