Proposed Protocol for Field Testing of Endurance Fitness of Young Labrador Retrievers
2023
The number of dogs and, with it, dog sports are growing in popularity, and the training of dogs begins at an early age. Although fitness testing is an imperative part of purposeful training and sports, to our knowledge, no objective field tests are available for measuring young dogs’ endurance fitness. The aim of this study is to describe a simple, easy-to-repeat, and inexpensive way to test training intervention effects on endurance fitness in young Labrador Retrievers. Healthy client-owned 16-week-old Labrador Retrievers will be recruited and divided into test and control groups. The test group will have an eight-week training program followed by a four-week detraining period, while the c…
Association between cardiorespiratory fitness and metabolic health in overweight and obese adults
2022
BACKGROUND: Cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) has been inversely associated with insulin resistance and clustering of cardiometabolic risk factors among overweight and obese individuals. However, most previous studies have scaled CRF by body mass (BM) possibly inflating the association between CRF and cardiometabolic health. We investigated the associations of peak oxygen uptake (V̇ O2peak) and peak power output (Wpeak) scaled either by BM-1, fat free mass (FFM-1), or by allometric methods with individual cardiometabolic risk factors and clustering of cardiometabolic risk factors in 55 overweight or obese adults with metabolic syndrome. METHODS: V̇ O2peak and Wpeak were assessed by a maximal …
Associations of Cardiorespiratory Fitness and Adiposity With Arterial Stiffness and Arterial Dilatation Capacity in Response to a Bout of Exercise in…
2019
Purpose: To investigate the associations of directly measured peak oxygen uptake (V˙O2peak) and body fat percentage (BF%) with arterial stiffness and arterial dilatation capacity in children. Methods: Findings are based on 329 children (177 boys and 152 girls) aged 8–11 years. V˙O2peak was assessed by a maximal cardiopulmonary exercise test on a cycle ergometer and scaled by lean body mass (LM). BF% and LM were measured by bioelectrical impedance. Stiffness index (measure of arterial stiffness) and change in reflection index (ΔRI, measure of arterial dilatation capacity) were assessed by pulse contour analysis. Data were analyzed by linear regression models. Results: VO2peak/LM was positive…
Neuromagnetic studies of attention in children and youth: Role of exercise and impact on cognitive competence
2023
Tarkkaavuus on monella tavoin yhteydessä elimistömme sisäisiin ja ulkoisiin tekijöihin aivojen kehityksen aikana, jolloin aivot muovautuvat voimakkaasti. Tässä väitöskirjassa tutkitaan tarkkaavuutta kahdesta eri näkökulmasta: millä tavoin oma toimintamme vaikuttaa tarkkaavuuteen ja toisaalta miten tarkkaavuus moduloi muita kognitiivisia toimintoja. Tarkemmin sanottuna väitöskirjassa tutkitaan fyysisen aktiivisuuden ja aerobisen kunnon yhteyksiä ennakoivan tarkkaavuuden ja modaliteettien välisen tarkkaavuuden suuntaamisen aivoperustaan 13-17-vuotiailla nuorilla. Lisäksi väitöskirjassa tutkitaan millä tavoin tarkkaavuus vaikuttaa puheäänteiden ja ei-kielellisten äänteiden käsittelyyn aivoissa…
Brain, cognition and physically active lifestyle in healthy ageing
2018
Normal ageing is accompanied by profound changes in brain structure and declines in the automatic processing of sensory stimuli, which in turn lead to altered cognitive performance. However, behaviour and lifestyle factors, such as physical activity, may help to maintain the brain’s structural connectivity and function, as well as cognitive functioning in old age. Study I examined the effects of age on the brain’s capability to detect changes in somatosensory stimuli by recording event-related potentials (ERPs) in response to electrical stimulation of different fingers in young and older adults. The results of Study I show that somatosensory mismatch response (sMMR) was attenuated in amplit…
The Quantified Athlete: Associations of Wearables for High School Athletes
2018
The adoption of wearable technology in competitive sports can be an advantage to performance and training. Athletes who use personalised data to quantify their performances with the possibilities of sharing with others may use wearables to reinforce the athletic identity. Despite these changes, few studies have actually examined the associations between wearables and developing athletes in their quest for professional sports. Student athletes (n = 437, age = 17y) still in high schools completed a web-based survey about their professional aspirations, athletic identity, and the association with wearables. Wearables were measured by ownership and usage of apps, fitness trackers, or sports wat…
"Rasvaton kroppa -syndrooma" : diskurssianalyyttinen tutkimus liikunnan ja kehonkuvan yhteyksistä fitness-blogeissa
2016
Moberg, M. 2016. ”Rasvaton kroppa -syndrooma”: Diskurssianalyyttinen tutkimus liikunnan ja kehonkuvan yhteyksistä fitness-blogeissa. Terveystieteiden laitos, Jyväskylän yliopisto, Terveyskasvatuksen pro gradu -tutkielma, 74 sivua. Paneudun tutkimuksessani siihen, millaisena liikunnan ja kehonkuvan välinen suhde näyttäytyy fitness-blogeissa. Kiinnostuksen kohteena on paljon huomiota herättänyt ajankohtainen ilmiö naisten lihaksikkaan vartalon tavoittelun ja kuntosaliharjoittelun ympärillä. Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on selvittää, minkälaisia merkityksiä liikunnalle rakentuu ulkonäön ja kehonkuvan osalta fitness-blogeissa, ja millaisena toimijuus näyttäytyy näiden blogien kirjoituksissa. Ainei…
Physical activity during pregnancy and early childhood from the perspective of gestational diabetes risk and children's body composition
2017
This study investigated the factors associated with self-reported leisure-time physical activity excluding household activities (LTPAexHH) among women at risk for gestational diabetes (GDM), change in self-reported LTPA including household activities (LTPAinHH) from pre-pregnancy to 7-year follow-up as well as the influence of risk for GDM on their children’s physical activity (PA) and body composition. The association between maternal and child PA, and associations of PA with body composition and physical fitness in preschoolers were also studied. A sample of 399 pregnant women at risk for GDM was examined in a cohort study, and 199 mother-child dyads were assessed in cross-sectional and l…
Field-Based Health-Related Physical Fitness Tests in Children and Adolescents: A Systematic Review
2021
Physical fitness (PF) is a multi-component construct and a biomarker of health. Worse PF is related to vulnerability and predicts worse academic achievements. Thus, assessing PF is important to monitor health in youth. This systematic review aimed to identify and inform physical education, health professionals and entities about existing PF batteries and field-tests that can be used in school settings. A comprehensive literature search was carried out in five electronic databases (Academic Search Complete, Education Resources Information Center, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science) to identify PF battery protocols that can be carried out in the school setting. Overall, 24 PF batteries were i…
Associations of cardiometabolic risk factors with heart rate variability in 6‐ to 8‐year‐old children : The PANIC Study
2020
Background Associations of cardiometabolic risk factors with heart rate variability (HRV) in children are unclear. We examined associations of cardiometabolic risk score (CRS) and individual cardiometabolic risk factors with HRV variables in 6‐ to 8‐year‐olds. Methods The participants were a population‐based sample of 443 children participating in baseline measurements of the Physical Activity and Nutrition in Children trial. Cardiometabolic risk factors included waist circumference (WC), insulin, glucose, triglycerides, HDL cholesterol, systolic blood pressure (SBP), and diastolic blood pressure (DBP). CRS was calculated as WC + insulin + glucose + triglycerides − HDL cholesterol + the mea…
