An Introduction to Geometric Algebra and Conics

2016

This chapter introduces the conics and characterizes them from an algebraic perspective. While in depth geometrical aspects of the conics lie outside the scopes of this chapter, this chapter is an opportunity to revisit concepts studied in other chapters such as matrix and determinant and assign a new geometric characterization to them.

Expression of the Anti-amyloidogenic Secretase ADAM10 Is Suppressed by Its 5′-Untranslated Region*

2010

Proteolytic processing of the amyloid precursor protein by alpha-secretase prevents formation of the amyloid beta-peptide (Abeta), which is the main constituent of amyloid plaques in brains of Alzheimer disease (AD) patients. alpha-Secretase activity is decreased in AD, and overexpression of the alpha-secretase ADAM10 (a disintegrin and metalloprotease 10) in an AD animal model prevents amyloid pathology. ADAM10 has a 444-nucleotide-long, very GC-rich 5'-untranslated region (5'-UTR) with two upstream open reading frames. Because similar properties of 5'-UTRs are found in transcripts of many genes, which are regulated by translational control mechanisms, we asked whether ADAM10 expression is…

Development and validation of a 5 stroke engine for range extenders application

2014

International audience; A 5-stroke turbo-charged port-injection spark-ignition engine has been developed in the present study for use as a range extender or series-hybrid main power source. The development and the design of the engine are based on 0D/1D model and experimental results have been compared with the engine model. The 5-stroke engine is a three-cylinder in which two cylinders perform a four-stroke cycle and alternatively a second expansion of the burnt gases is performed in the third cylinder. The boost pressure delivered by the turbocharger is controlled by a particular innovative system called “smart wastegate”, different from a conventional wastegate, consisting in a variable …

Can aromaticity be connected with molecular polarizability? A theoretical study of benzene isomers and five-membered heterocyclic molecules

2004

Extended calculations of molecular electric dipole polarizability tensor, at Hartree-Fock and correlated level of accuracy (MP2, CCS, CC2, CCSD, and CCSD(T)) have been carried out to investigate whether aromaticity could be related to the electric dipole polarizability of planar ring systems. The calculations prove the exaltation of the average property of conjugated molecules, which is possibly due to their easily polarizable π-electron cloud. On the other hand, theoretical out-of-plane polarizability components are smaller in benzene than in any other C$_6$H$_6$ isomer. The aromatic stabilization energies of monosubstituted five-membered conjugated cyclic molecules increase in the same di…

Analysis of the Single-Nucleotide Polymorphism in the 5′UTR and Part of Intron I of the Sheep MSTN Gene

2011

The myostatin (MSTN) gene region encompassing the 5′UTR and part of intron I was sequenced in animals of two herds of Latvian Darkhead sheep to extend data on the ovine MSTN gene polymorphism and to provide information useful for local breed conservation. Two and four polymorphic loci were revealed in the 5′UTR and intron I. Four and five local haplotypes were constructed, respectively. The genotyping data obtained and that previously reported for the same genomic region were combined in one dataset for the haplotype analysis. Recombination events were detected between loci (c.−40, c.−37) in the 5′UTR and (c.373+18, c.373+101) and (c.373+101, c.373+241) in intron I. Single-nucleotide polymo…

Specific roles of 5′ RNA secondary structures in stabilizing transcripts in chloroplasts

2005

RNA secondary structures, e.g. stem-loops that are often found at the 5' and 3' ends of mRNAs, are in many cases known to be crucial for transcript stability but their role in prolonging the lifetime of transcripts remains elusive. In this study we show for an essential RNA-stabilizing stem-loop at the 5' end of rbcL gene transcripts in Chlamydomonas that it neither prevents ribonucleases from binding to the RNA nor impedes their movement along the RNA strand. The stem-loop has a formative function in that it mediates folding of a short sequence around its base into a specific RNA conformation, consisting of a helical and single-stranded region, i.e. the real structure required for longevit…

Achievement goal orientations and subjective well-being: A person-centred analysis

2008

Abstract This study examined whether students with different achievement goal orientation profiles differ in terms of subjective well-being (i.e., self-esteem, depressive symptoms, school-related burnout, and educational goal appraisals). Six groups of students with unique motivational profiles were identified. Observed differences in subjective well-being indicated that goals related to self-improvement and growth were positively associated with various indices of well-being, whereas avoidance tendencies and concerns with validating or demonstrating one's competence were linked with different types of adjustment problems. Findings demonstrate the importance of including measures of well-be…

Maladaptive Personality Traits and Their Interaction with Outcome Expectancies in Gaming Disorder and Internet-Related Disorders

2021

Gambling disorder and gaming disorder have recently been recognized as behavioral addictions in the ICD-11 (International Classification of Diseases, 11th edition). The association between behavioral addictions and personality has been examined before, yet there is a lack of studies on maladaptive traits and their relationship to specific outcome expectancies. In study 1, we recruited a community sample (n = 365)

A Study on the Emigration Enablers of the Romanian Students in Theology

2018

The main purpose of this article is to describe and validate/test a set of hypothetical traits of the theology students from two important Romanian universities regarding their migration attitudes after graduation. The study is based on a consistent questionnaire survey, both in terms of architecture of variables and number of complete responses. After cleaning, processing and doing all the required derivations on the original data, statistical analysis methods have been applied. The results have brought solid arguments to validate all the hypotheses that marked the starting point of this study. They finally proved the importance of specific personal motivations and personality traits as ke…
