Detection of gastric atrophy by circulating pepsinogens: A comparison of three assays.

2017

Background Circulating levels of pepsinogens have been used in high gastric cancer-risk Asian and European populations to triage endoscopic evaluation for more severe pathology. There are different analytic methods with uncertain correlations. We therefore compared diagnostic performance of three commonly used pepsinogen assays to detect histologically confirmed gastric atrophy. Methods We tested plasma samples from adult patients with (n=50) and without (n=755) moderate or severe gastric corpus atrophy, as determined histologically by consensus of three expert pathologists. A single laboratory measured pepsinogens I (PgI) and II (PgII) using commercially available assays: two ELISA assays …

Maxillofacial fracture epidemiology and treatment plans in the Northeast of Iran: A retrospective study

2017

Background: The epidemiology of facial injuries varies based on lifestyle, cultural background and socioeconomic status in different countries and geographic zones. This study evaluated the epidemiology of maxillofacial fractures and treatment plans in hospitalized patients in Northeast of Iran (2015-2016). Material and Methods: In this retrospective study, the medical records of 502 hospitalized patients were evaluated in the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery in Kamyab Hospital in Mashhad, Iran. The type and cause of fractures and treatment plans were recorded in a checklist. Data were analyzed with Mann–Whitney test, chi-squared test and Fisher’s exact test, using SPSS 21. Results: The …

Retrospective study maxillofacial fractures epidemiology and treatment plans in Southeast of Iran

2015

Background: The epidemiology of facial injuries varies in different countries and geographic zones. Population concentration, lifestyle, cultural background, and socioeconomic status can affect the prevalence of maxillofacial injuries. Therefore, in this study, we evaluated the maxillofacial fractures epidemiology and treatment plans in hospitalized patients (2012-2014) which would be useful for better policy making strategies. Material and Methods: In this retrospective study, the medical records of 386 hospitalized patients were evaluated from the department of maxillofacial surgery at Bahonar Hospital of Kerman, Iran. The type and cause of fractures and treatment plans were recorded in a…

Accuracy of two plasma antibody tests and faecal antigen test for non-invasive detection of H. pylori in middle-aged Caucasian general population sam…

2018

The aim of the study was to assess the accuracy of two plasma Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) antibody test-systems and a stool antigen test (SAT) system in a general population sample in Latvia.Blood and faecal samples were analysed in healthy individuals (40-64 years), referred for upper gastrointestinal endoscopy according to pilot study protocol within a population-based study investigating gastric cancer prevention strategies (GISTAR pilot study). Antibodies to H. pylori were assessed in plasma by latex-agglutination test and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). H. pylori antigen in faecal samples was detected by a monoclonal enzyme immunoassay-based SAT. Histological assessment …

Axis Rotation and Visually Induced Motion Sickness: The Role of Combined Roll, Pitch, and Yaw Motion

2011

A well-known phenomenon in aviation and in virtual environments such as simulators or computer games is motion sickness (MS). The amount of sensory conflict is thought to be responsible for the severity of MS, which should increase with the complexity of the simulated motion. The focus of the present study is on the direction and complexity of simulated body rotations in the genesis and severity of visually induced MS. The methods utilized for this study are as follows: Three simulated rollercoaster rides including translational movement in the fore-aft axis and additional rotational motion either in pitch only, along the pitch and roll axes, or in pitch, roll, and yaw were generated. The a…

Decompression/Stabilization of the Metastatic Spine: Cotrel-Dubousset-Lnstrumentation in 50 Patients Jan

1993

50 patients with metastatic disease of the spine underwent dorsal decompression and stabilization with the Cotrel-Dubousset-Instrumentation from 1987 to 1991. Indications for surgical treatment were neurologic deficit, spinal instability, and/or pain resistant to medical or radiation treatment. No external orthotics were used postoperatively. Pain was relieved dramatically in 45 patients. Among 25 patients suffering from neurologic deficit preoperatively, 13 improved, 15 remained unchanged, whereas 2 developed an incomplete, transient paraplegia. 15 (7) patients were alive after 1 (2) years. Postoperative complications were frequent, but there were only 2 failures of the stabilization devic…

Complex radial head and neck fractures treated with modern locking plate fixation

2019

Background Internal fixation of complex radial head and neck (CRHN) fractures is difficult, and postoperative complications are common. This study evaluated elbow function and patient clinical status after internal fixation of CRHN fractures with modern locking plates. Methods We included 40 patients with 41 fractures (1 bilateral lesion). In 25 patients (61%), a concomitant injury was found. Patients were an average age of 46 years (range, 22-70 years). The mean follow-up time was 36 months (range, 2-70 months). Postoperative assessments included evaluation of range of motion, functional scores, and radiologic findings. We assessed fracture healing, surgical complications, revision surgery…

Orthopedic and neurosurgical treatment of severe kyphosis in myelomeningocele

1999

Kyphosis in myelomeningocele is characterized by a complex pattern of problems during development and therapy. On the one hand, decompensation of upright posture leads to loss of sitting ability and social integration; on the other hand, accompanying malformations and trophic alterations threaten the physical integrity and performance. Neurologic function, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) circulation, skeletal deformity and the urinary transport system need to be kept in mind and need to be treated with cooperation between the different specialties. Especially during serious surgical interventions such as spinal surgery, neither the nervous system nor the kidneys must be ignored. Sixteen patients …

Predicting the failure in distal femur fractures.

2018

Abstract Introduction The incidence of nonunion after fractures of the distal femur is up to 6%. The distal femoral nonunion is a disabling disease that needs complex steps in his treatment. Aim of our study is to find predicting factors of non-unions. Materials and methods We retrospectively analyzed 116 cases of distal femoral fractures and 20 cases of non-unions. In both surgeries we analyzed: accuracy of reduction, stability of fixation, hardware used, residual medial or lateral bone defect, use of autologous or heterologous bone grafts. Results Malreduction, particularly axial defect, associated with unbalanced fixation, and a medial cortical bone defect of greater or lesser extent wer…

Event-related potential (ERP) responses to violations of inflectional and derivational rules of Finnish

2007

Event-related potentials (ERP) were used to investigate the electrophysiological correlates of inflectional and derivational morphology. The participants were presented with visual sentences containing critical words in which either inflectional, derivational or both rules (combined violation) of Finnish were violated. Inflectional anomalies violated a number agreement of a noun with a previous auxiliary word. Derivational violations included a word-internal selectional restriction violation, i.e., a root and suffix category violation. Combined violations contained both a number and a category violation. The phonemic length of the critical words was controlled. Inflectional violations elici…
