Multiprocessor SoC Implementation of Neural Network Training on FPGA

Software implementations of artificial neural networks (ANNs) and their training on a sequential processor are inefficient because they do not take advantage of parallelism. ASIC and FPGA implementations employ specific hardware structures to exploit parallelism in order to improve processing speed; however, optimizing resource usage requires the use of fixed-point arithmetic, thereby losing precision, and the final system is restricted to a particular network topology. Designing an innovative system for sea wave utilization

For the sea wave energy exploitation, the department of Energy of Palermo University is investigating a new approach based on the mechanical motion conversion from a linear motion into a unidirectional rotary motion. This mechanical output can be used to run alternators, producing electrical power with a very simplified energy conversion chain. First preliminary tests have been realized in laboratory using a small-scale prototype.

A motion planning algorithm for the invalid initial state disassembly problem

Sampling-based motion planners are able to plan disassembly paths at high performance. They are limited by the fact that the input triangle sets of the static and dynamic object need to be free of collision in the initial and all following states. In real world applications, like the disassembly planning in car industry, this often does not hold true. Beside data inaccuracy, this is mainly caused by the modeling of flexible parts as rigid bodies, especially fixture elements like clips. They cause the invalid initial state disassembly problem. An innovative mechanical motion converter for sea wave applications

The paper shows an innovative system designed and developed by University of Palermo. The device is based on a simple mechanical converter able to transform a variable bidirectional linear motion into a unidirectional rotary motion. This technology can be successful used in sea wave applications, producing a mechanical output usable for the electrical energy production.

Grammars++ for modelling information in text

Abstract Grammars provide a convenient means to describe the set of valid instances in a text database. Flexibility in choosing a grammar can be exploited to provide information modelling capability by designing productions in the grammar to represent entities and relationships of interest to database applications. Additional constraints can be specified by attaching predicates to selected nonterminals in the grammar. When used for database definition, grammars can provide the functionality that users have come to expect of database schemas. Extended grammars can also be used to specify database manipulation, including query, update, view definition, and index specification.

Maximizing reading: pattern analysis to describe points of gaze

As people read texts, their points of gaze can be described either as a sequence or as a pattern of dots. If reading fixations are visualized as a pattern and their duration is graphically attributed to the 3 rd dimension, image processing techniques can be employed to describe individual reading styles. Two reader groups of text editors and of University students were matching according to parametric tests. Yet they appeared to have marked inter-subject variability of fixation distribution when individual cases were considered. SOCIAL CAPITAL AND BANK PERFORMANCE: AN INTERNATIONAL COMPARISON FOR OECD COUNTRIES

Over the last few years the literature on social capital and bank efficiency analysis has expanded rapidly. We merge them by analysing how social capital affects bank efficiency in OECD countries. We use activity analysis techniques to measure efficiency, and social capital, which is related to the concept of generalized trust, is considered an environmental variable. Results suggest that the effect of social capital is more relevant for those financial institutions operating in low-social-capital environments. In these cases, inefficiencies are biased upwards, and controlling for social capital enables these banks to move up in the efficiency rankings.
