Muscle fascicle and tendon behavior during human locomotion revisited.

2008

High-speed ultrasonography has revealed that, in human locomotion, the nature of fascicle and tendon length changes varies depending on the task, contraction intensity, and the muscles involved. The findings emphasize that the active fascicles of the gastrocnemius muscle are suddenly stretched, although they are shortening. This short-lasting stretch triggers the stretch reflex, timing of which is dependent on running speed.

Search for supersymmetric particles in scenarios with a gravitino LSP and stau NLSP

Sleptons, neutralinos and charginos were searched for in the context of scenarios where the lightest supersymmetric particle is the gravitino. It was assumed that the stau is the next-to-lightest supersymmetric particle. Data collected with the DELPHI detector at a centre-of-mass energy near 189 GeV were analysed combining the methods developed in previous searches at lower energies. No evidence for the production of these supersymmetric particles was found. Hence, limits were derived at 95% confidence level.

Morphology, flexural, and thermal properties of sepiolite modified epoxy resins with different curing agents

A bisphenol A-based epoxy resin was modified with 5 wt% organically modified sepiolite (Pangel B40) and thermally cured using two different curing agents: an aliphatic diamine (Jeffamine D230, D230) and a cycloaliphatic diamine (3DCM). The morphology of the cured materials was established by scanning and transmission electron microscopy analysis. The thermal stability, thermo-mechanical properties, and flexural behaviour of the sepiolite-modified matrices were evaluated and compared with the corresponding neat matrix. Nanotransducers on printed circuit boards by rational design of high-density, long, thin and untapered ZnO nanowires

Abstract Nanotransducers can offer crucial advantages in comparison with conventional sensors and actuators. However, interfacing and packaging nanostructures into complete electronic systems is very complex. Here we describe a wet chemical method for cointegrating arrays of ZnO nanowires into systems on printed circuit boards (PCBs). First, we deposit on the PCB a MnOOH layer for reproducibly increasing the nanowires density. Afterwards, we numerically demonstrate that the ligand ethylenediamine, at the isoelectric point of the ZnO nanowires tips, can effectively control, at very low concentrations, both zinc speciation and supersaturation in the nutrient solution. Circulatory and respiratory reactions during the implantation of joint endoprostheses have been observed for years. The components of the bone cements used for anchoring (methyl methacrylate monomer) or the outpour of bone marrow substances from the affected bone marrow cavity are thought to be chiefly responsible for these effects. Heart rate variability is the result of several physiological regulation mechanisms, including cardiovascular and cardiorespiratory interactions. Since instantaneous influences occurring within the same cardiac beat are commonplace in this regulation, their inclusion is mandatory to get a realistic model of physiological causal interactions. This chapter explains symptoms and nature of neurogenic inflammation and its importance in posttraumatic complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS). Neurogenic inflammation regularly accompanies excitation of primary afferent nociceptors. It has two major components – plasma extravasation and vasodilatation. The most important mediators are the neuropeptides calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and substance P (SP).
