Hip muscle function in patients with symptomatic femoroacetabular impingement
2014
Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) is a pathomechanical process of the hip joint, which could lead to hip pain and functional disability. Aim of this thesis was to investigate hip muscle function in patients with a symptomatic FAI. Hip muscle function was first investigated before patients underwent any surgical treatment for managing FAI. It was shown that they present with reduced hip muscle strength (i.e., muscle weakness), probably due to hip muscle inhibition. Nevertheless, hip muscle weakness was not associated with exaggerated hip muscle fatigue. Hip muscle strength recovery was then evaluated in a series of patients after hip arthroscopy to treat FAI. These patients demonstrated a g…
La sufixació apreciativa del català: creacions lèxiques i implicacions morfològiques
2015
Effect of fatigue and gender on kinematics and ground reaction forces variables in recreational runners.
2017
The presence of fatigue has been shown to modify running biomechanics. Overall in terms of gender, women are at lower risk than men for sustaining running-related injuries, although it depends on the factors taken into account. One possible reason for these differences in the injury rate and location might be the dissimilar running patterns between men and women. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of fatigue and gender on the kinematic and ground reaction forces (GRF) parameters in recreational runners. Fifty-seven participants (28 males and 29 females) had kinematic and GRF variables measured while running at speed of 3.3 m s−1 before and after a fatigue test protocol. T…
Force Generation Profiles of Para-Nordic Sit-Skiers Representing Different Physical Impairments
2021
Abstract Purpose To biomechanically profile force generation connected to the complex role of the trunk in double poling in a representative sample of Para-Nordic sit-skiers. Methods Twelve male World Cup Para-Nordic sit-skiers (sport classes: LW10–12) were skiing on flat snow terrain at submaximal speed of 4.5 m/s (~ 73% maximum speed). 2D video (50 Hz) and pole force analyses (1000 Hz) were performed synchronously, examining angle, force and cycle characteristics to analyse the role of the trunk in generating propulsion. Results LW10–11.5 skiers lost between 21% and 4% propulsive force versus LW12 athletes only due to different geometrics of the trunk and pole angle at an equal axial pole…
Flexibility of Thiel's embalmed cadavers: the explanation is probably in the muscles
2011
International audience; Introduction The flexibility of cadavers conserved using Thiel's embalming method remains unexplained. We aimed to perform microscopic comparison of muscle and tendon fibres from fresh cadavers (FC), formaldehyde-preserved cadavers (FPC) and cadavers conserved by Thiel's method (TC). Methods Muscle and tendon biopsies performed on FC, FPC and TC were conditioned and stained by Masson's trichrome, Sirius red and Ramon y Cajal, then studied under optical microscope. Alignment and integrity of the muscle and tendon fibres were studied. Results We observed a modification of the muscle fibres in all specimens from TC, regardless of the type of staining used. The muscle fi…
Mechanical properties of basalt fiber reinforced composites manufactured with different vacuum assisted impregnation techniques
2016
Abstract This work describes an experimental mechanical characterisation campaign on composites made out of a quasi-unidirectional basalt fabric. In order to evaluate the ability of commercial basalt fabrics and their composites to meet the potentials of basalt fibers, the work has used raw materials from commercial catalogs with no further modification. Two common manufacturing techniques for medium performance composites have been adopted: vacuum assisted resin infusion, and hand-impregnated vacuum bagging. Two panels, one for each technique, have been fabricated, able to provide a sufficient number of samples for a comprehensive stiffness and strength characterization through Tensile, Fl…

A new Frequency Domain Measure of Causality based on Partial Spectral Decomposition of Autoregressive Processes and its Application to Cardiovascular…
2019
We present a new method to quantify in the frequency domain the strength of directed interactions between linear stochastic processes. This issue is traditionally addressed by the directed coherence (DC), a popular causality measure derived from the spectral representation of vector autoregressive (AR) processes. Here, to overcome intrinsic limitations of the DC when it needs to be objectively quantified within specific frequency bands, we propose an approach based on spectral decomposition, which allows to isolate oscillatory components related to the pole representation of the vector AR process in the Z-domain. Relating the causal and non-causal power content of these components we obtain…
