Free-surface flows solved by means of SPH schemes with numerical diffusive terms
2010
A novel system of equations has been defined which contains diffusive terms in both the continuity and energy equations and, at the leading order, coincides with a standard weakly-compressible SPH scheme with artificial viscosity. A proper state equation is used to associate the internal energy variation to the pressure field and to increase the speed of sound when strong deformations/compressions of the fluid occur. The increase of the sound speed is associated to the shortening of the time integration step and, therefore, allows a larger accuracy during both breaking and impact events. Moreover, the diffusive terms allows reducing the high frequency numerical acoustic noise and smoothing …
Europeanisation as a driver of dependent financialisation in East-Central Europe: insights from the Baltic states
2021
The aim of this paper is to contribute to advancing the academic debate on dependent financialisation through a focus on East-Central Europe. In doing so, the paper identifies the role of Europeanisation as a driver of dependent financialisation using the Baltic States of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania as case studies. The paper makes two main contributions to the literature on dependent financialisation. First, it argues that, through the establishment of 'financial chains', dependent financialisation creates asymmetric co-dependencies and bilateral risks between the 'dependent' economies in the (semi-)periphery and the financial actors in core countries. While the (semi-)peripheral economi…
Challenges and trends of debt capital raising by SME: experience of the Baltic States
2012
The paper analyses topical issue of debt capital raising by small and medium-sized enterprises in the Baltic States under changing economic conditions. Raise of debt capital is crucial for SME, as financing and its availability is a critical precondition for the survival and development of enterprises. The paper gives an assessment of recent developments in debt capital raising in the Baltic States, identifies the most important challenges and problems, as well as the mistakes made. Based on the analysis made, authors provide solutions for debt capital raising challenges and possible changes in corporate finance of enterprises.
How Costly are Debt Crises?
2010
The aim of this paper is to assess the short- and medium-term impact of debt crises on GDP. Using an unbalanced panel of 154 countries from 1970 to 2008, the paper shows that debt crises produce significant and long-lasting output losses, reducing output by about 10 percent after eight years. The results also suggest that debt crises tend to be more detrimental than banking and currency crises. The significance of the results is robust to different specifications, identification and endogeneity checks, and datasets.
High Reynolds number Navier-Stokes solutions and boundary layer separation induced by a rectilinear vortex
2013
Abstract We compute the solutions of Prandtl’s and Navier–Stokes equations for the two dimensional flow induced by a rectilinear vortex interacting with a boundary in the half plane. For this initial datum Prandtl’s equation develops, in a finite time, a separation singularity. We investigate the different stages of unsteady separation for Navier–Stokes solution at different Reynolds numbers Re = 103–105, and we show the presence of a large-scale interaction between the viscous boundary layer and the inviscid outer flow. We also see a subsequent stage, characterized by the presence of a small-scale interaction, which is visible only for moderate-high Re numbers Re = 104–105. We also investi…
Predicting storm triggered debris flow events: application to the 2009 Ionian-Peloritan disaster (Sicily, Italy)
2015
Debris flows are shallow landslides triggered by extreme meteorological events and propagating into the drainage lines of a slope as a fluid. A debris flow susceptibility map depicts the spatial probability for future phenomena to be triggered in a given area. Stochastic approaches are widely used in landslide studies for the assessment of the susceptibility. In fact, they allow to obtain a predictive function which relates a response variable (presence/absence of landslides) and a set of physical-environmental variables which are expected to control the slope failure phenomena. Future landslide occurrences are typically predicted by studying a past landslide inventory, under the basic assu…
Digital image-based technique for monitoring surface velocity: sensitivity analysis with processing parameters using data of a study case
2016
This paper describes the application of image-based technique for mapping surface velocity of hyper-concentrated flows. The analysis is conducted with the aid of data collected in a scale laboratory flume constructed at the Hydraulic laboratory of the Department of Civil, Environmental, Aerospatial and of Mate-rials Engineering (DICAM) – University of Palermo (Italy). A fully digital images-based technique has been applied to record a large amount of high resolution images identifying simultaneously the position of points in different time instants. The sensitivity analysis of the estimated flow velocity with the acquisition conditions and the number of processed frames is performed
Monitoring of surface velocity of hyper-concentrated flow in a laboratory flume by means of fully-digital PIV
2016
This paper investigates the utility and the efficiency of the digital image-technique for remote monitoring of surface velocity in hyper-concentrated flow by the aid of data collected during experiments conducted in the laboratory flume. In particular the present paper attention is focused on the estimation procedure of the velocity vectors and on their sensitivity with parameters (number of images, spatial resolution of interrogation area, ) of the images processing procedure.
