Modeling the early paths of phonological awareness and factors suopporting its development in children with and without familiar risk of dyslexia
2007
The development of phonological awareness (PA) before school age was modeled in association with the development of vocabulary and letter knowledge, home literacy environment (HLE), children's reading interest, and beginning reading skill in children with and without familial risk of dyslexia. A total of 186 children were followed from birth to the age of 6.5 years. Of these children, about half had a familial background of reading difficulties (the at-risk group), and the other half came from families without such background (the control group). The data from several measures and assessment time points were analyzed within an SEM framework, and a latent analysis of growth curves was employ…
–luokkalaisilta oppilailta vuosina 2013-2014. Hankkeessa verrataan minäpystyvyyteen kohdentuvien interventioiden ja pelkän taitoharjoittelun vaikutusta oppimisvaikeuksii…
Dynamics of morphological processing in pre-school children with and without familial risk for dyslexia
2020
Difficulties in phonological processing and speech perception are associated with developmental dyslexia, but there is considerable diversity across people with developmental dyslexia (e.g., dyslexics with and without phonological difficulties). Phonological and morphological awareness are both known to play an important role in reading acquisition. Problems in morpho-phonological information processing could arguably be associated with developmental dyslexia, especially for Finnish, which is a rich morphologically language. We used MEG to study the connection between morpho-phonology in the Finnish language and familial risk for developmental dyslexia. We measured event-related fields (ERF…
Nopean sarjallisen nimeämisen yhteys laskemisen sujuvuuteen hitailla laskijoilla
2018
Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli selvittää yhden kielellisen osataidon, no-pean sarjallisen nimeämisen yhteyttä laskusujuvuuteen hitailla laskijoilla. Tar-kastelun kohteena oli selvittää, missä määrin hitailla laskijoilla on nimeämisessä hitautta ja missä määrin nimeämisen taidoilla on yhteyttä laskusujuvuuteen. Kognitiivisista tekijöistä huomioitiin lisäksi erikseen fonologisen tietoisuuden yhteys laskusujuvuuteen. Tutkimus perustuu Suomen Akatemian rahoittamaan Jyväskylän yliopis-ton erityispedagogiikan ja kasvatustieteiden laitoksen sekä Niilo Mäki Instituu-tin yhteisen tutkimushankkeen aineistoon. Self-Efficacy and Learning Disabili-ties Intervention (SELDI) –tutkimushankkeen tavoitt…
An Evaluation of the Efficacy of GraphoGame Rime for Promoting English Phonics Knowledge in Poor Readers
2020
© Copyright © 2020 Ahmed, Wilson, Mead, Noble, Richardson, Wolpert and Goswami. Here, we report further analysis of data drawn from a Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) run in the United Kingdom designed to evaluate the efficacy of an adaptive software game to aid the learning of English phonics, GraphoGame Rime. We evaluate the efficacy of GraphoGame Rime for the “top half” of players in the RCT, children aged 6 to 7 years who played above the group mean play progress point (95 children). We also analyze three sub-groupings of this cohort. The GraphoGame family of games in different languages was originally designed to support children at family risk of dyslexia, hence we analyzed data for …
Brain event-related potentials to phoneme contrasts and their correlation to reading skills in school-age children
2017
Development of reading skills has been shown to be tightly linked to phonological processing skills and to some extent to speech perception abilities. Although speech perception is also known to play a role in reading development, it is not clear which processes underlie this connection. Using event-related potentials (ERPs) we investigated the speech processing mechanisms for common and uncommon sound contrasts (/ba/-/da/-/ga/ and /ata/-/at: a/) with respect to the native language of school-age children in Finland and the US. In addition, a comprehensive behavioral test battery of reading and phonological processing was administered. ERPs revealed that the children could discriminate betw…
Observations on possible use of the "Literate" game on poor readers in a multicultural classroom setting
2007
The 'Literate' game, developed in Finland, is designed to help enhance learning lettersound correspondences and later reading of words with increasing complexity in children. The ̔Literate̓ game uses the phonetic/synthetic method of teaching phonological awareness which is currently seen as the basis of all reading. The ̔Literate̓ was piloted in Zambia (2005) to determine how it could be implemented into a multi-cultural setting. Factors such as pre-intervention skill and language background were examined in relation to observations of the game-based learning among the poor readers. A sample of 8 pupils (6 girls and 2 boys) was selected from a Grade 2 class at a private international school…
