Habitual street food intake and subclinical carotid atherosclerosis.

2013

Street food (SF) is defined as out-of-home food consumption, and generally consists of energy-dense meals rich in saturated fats and poor in fibers, vitamins and antioxidants. Though SF consumption may have unfavorable metabolic and cardiovascular effects, its possible association with atherosclerosis has not been considered. The association between habitual SF consumption and asymptomatic carotid atherosclerosis, defined as the presence of plaques and/or increased intima-media thickness, was therefore investigated. One thousand thirty-five randomly selected adult participants without known diabetes and atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases were cross-sectionally investigated in Palermo, …

Association of Taste Perception for Sweet, Salt, Sour, Bitter and Umami and Food Intake Among Community-dwelling Adults in the PREDIMED-PLUS Trial (P…

2019

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the association between taste perception for sweet, salt, sour, bitter and umami and food category intakes. We hypothesized that greater taste perception will be inversely associated with the amount consumed. METHODS: A cross-sectional baseline analysis was performed on community-dwelling overweight adults with metabolic syndrome (N = 367, 55–75y) from the PREDIMED-PLUS Trial, University of Valencia Center, Spain. Taste perception was determined by challenging subjects with standard solutions of sweet, salt, sour, bitter and umami (400 mM sucrose, 200 mM NaCl, 34 mM citric acid, 5.6 mM phenylthiocarbamide (PTC), 200 mM monopotassium glutamate, respectively) and ev…

Monotonous consumption of fibre-enriched bread at breakfast increases satiety and influences subsequent food intake

2012

Research report; International audience; This study aimed to observe the influence of the monotonous consumption of two types of fibre-enriched bread at breakfast on hedonic liking for the bread, subsequent hunger and energy intake. Two groups of unrestrained normal weight participants were given either white sandwich bread (WS) or multigrain sandwich bread (MG) at breakfast (the sensory properties of the WS were more similar to the usual bread eaten by the participants than those of the MG). In each group, two 15-day cross-over conditions were set up. During the experimental condition the usual breakfast of each participant was replaced by an isocaloric portion of plain bread (WS or MG). D…

Common Neural Mechanisms of Palatable Food Intake and Drug Abuse: Knowledge Obtained with Animal Models

2019

Eating is necessary for survival, but it is also one of the great pleasures enjoyed by human beings. Research to date shows that palatable food can be rewarding in a similar way to drugs of abuse, indicating considerable comorbidity between eating disorders and substance-use disorders. Analysis of the common characteristics of both types of disorder has led to a new wave of studies proposing a Gateway Theory of food as a vulnerability factor that modulates the development of drug addiction. The homeostatic and hedonic mechanisms of feeding overlap with some of the mechanisms implicated in drug abuse and their interaction plays a crucial role in the development of drug addiction. Studies in…

Prediction of type 2 diabetes mellitus based on nutrition data

2021

Abstract Numerous predictive models for the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) exist, but a minority of them has implemented nutrition data so far, even though the significant effect of nutrition on the pathogenesis, prevention and management of T2DM has been established. Thus, in the present study, we aimed to build a predictive model for the risk of T2DM that incorporates nutrition data and calculates its predictive performance. We analysed cross-sectional data from 1591 individuals from the population-based Cooperative Health Research in the Region of Augsburg (KORA) FF4 study (2013–14) and used a bootstrap enhanced elastic net penalised multivariate regression method in order to bu…

Temporal drivers of liking

2013

Abstract Generally liking is measured overall but is likely to vary over the food intake, like sensory perception. Replacing the attributes in Temporal Dominance of Sensations (TDS) by the categories of a usual ordinal liking scale makes it possible to monitor liking changes while eating a product (Sudre et al., 2012). This methodology allows for a better understanding of the influence of temporal dominance of sensations on liking and liking evolution over the time of product intake. Thus, it is possible to associate hedonic temporal data and descriptive temporal data (TDS profiles), which would identify drivers of liking, that is attributes which, when cited as dominant, would lead to a de…

Remplacement total de l’articulation temporo-mandibulaire par prothèse

2013

Summary Introduction The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) may be the location for tumoral, post-traumatic, degenerative, inflammatory, or congenital diseases requiring a prosthetic replacement. We present a technical note for total TMJ replacement with a Biomet ® Microfixation prosthesis (Jacksonville, FL, USA). Technical note The preoperative data includes dental panoramic X-ray, MRI of the TMJ, and CT-scan (or cone beam) of the facial skeleton. The last two mentioned examinations allow three-dimensional reconstructions and stereo-lithographic models required for surgical planning. The prosthetic device includes a temporal ultra-high density polyethylene component and a mandibular chrome-coba…

Reproducibility and relative validity of a newly developed web-based food-frequency questionnaire for assessment of preconception diet

2019

Abstract Background The importance of diet and nutrition during preconception age is a window of opportunity to promote future parental and transgenerational health. As a sub-study to a large Norwegian study, ‘Diet today – health of tomorrow’, a food-frequency questionnaire (FFQ) was developed to assess diet during the preconception phase in young adults aged 20 – 30 years and in this paper we report the reproducibility and relative validity of this questionnaire. Methods The FFQ was developed from an existing FFQ validated in adolescents. Participants were recruited on social media and at a university. Reproducibility was assessed by comparing the test and retest of the FFQ. Relative valid…

Effects of repeated handling, with or without anaesthesia, on feed intake and growth in juvenile rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum)

2006

The effects of weekly anaesthetization with clove oil and tricaine methanesulphonate (MS-222) on feed intake and growth were examined in juvenile rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum), held individually. Repeated handling without anaesthetics significantly reduced feed intake and weight gain compared with an unhandled control group during an 8-week experiment. When anaesthetics were used during handling the feed consumption and weight gain were significantly (MS-222) or not significantly (clove oil) higher than in fish handled without anaesthesia. When compared with the unhandled control group, neither of these two anaesthetics had significant effects on feed intake but, in contrast …
