Stressing sequence of steel cable-stayed bridges built by cantilevering

The construction of cable-stayed bridges by cantilevering implies several changes of geometry, stress and strain patterns during the assemblage of segments. The main target to be satisfied in the construction process is the achievement of the required final geometry and of a convenient state of stress for self-weight and sustained loads. Abstract In this paper the response of nonlinear systems driven by parametric Poissonian white noise is examined. As is well known, the response sample function or the response statistics of a system driven by external white noise processes is completely defined. Starting from the system driven by external white noise processes, when an invertible nonlinear transformation is applied, the transformed system in the new state variable is driven by a parametric type excitation. Comparing with the tractor-trailer systems for the road haulage, which must cope with some typical undesired trends, such as high-speed instability, over- or under-steering and off-tracking, the multi-trailer systems for the transport of luggage in the airports or in the railway stations, or for the transfer of goods in the warehouses, run at quite low speeds, but must manage to steer clear of the many obstacles encountered along their path. The role of the hydrophobic force in bilayer adhesion and fusion

The Surface Forces Apparatus technique was used for measuring the adhesion, deformation, and fusion of bilayers supported on mica. The technique allows the molecular rearrangements to be followed in real time during the fusion process, and the most important forces involved to be identified. The adhesion between two bilayers can be increased by two orders of magnitude if they are thinned so as to expose more hydrophobic groups. For all the bilayer systems studied a single basic fusion mechanism was found in which the bilayers do not “overcome” the short-range repulsive steric-hydration forces; instead, local bilayer deformations allow these repulsive forces to be “bypassed”.
