Positive Predictive Value of Extraversion in Diagnosing L2 WTC

2021

Willingness to communicate in a foreign/second language (L2 WTC) is now considered an influential variable underlying the second and foreign language learning processes. It is also perceived in terms of a fundamental goal of second language education, because its higher levels result in a greater desire to practise oral communication, bringing about successful language learning. According to the pyramid model of L2 WTC, it is rooted in personality which produces both distal and enduring influences on a student’s verbal behaviour. It can thus be expected that extraversion, a personality dimension identified with energy and enthusiasm and characterised by sensitivity to reward and sociability…

THE NE.FO.DO PROJECT: A NEURODIDACTIC OF FOREIGN LANGUAGE

2014

With the aim of creating appropriate programs to optimize the teaching/ learning process was created in 2008 the Project Ne.Fo.Do. (Neuroscience and Training of Foreign Language Teacher), based on a neurodidactic of foreign language created on the relationship between learning styles and education, foreign language teaching, educational psychology and neuroscience. In this paper we will focus primarily on the explanation of the latest techniques we have implemented for teaching, even from a neurophysiological point of view. The aim is to underlie the fact that techniques such as the analysis of eye movements in class and the Brain Gym along with the application of models of cognitive styles,…

English teachers’ motives for joining teaching specific Facebook groups and the perceived usefulness of them

2018

Erilaiset sosiaaliset mediat ja niiden käytön laajeneminen on ollut yksi suurimmista puheenaiheista teknologian saralla viimeisen parin vuosikymmenen aikana. Suurin ja eniten käyttäjiä keräävä sosiaalisen median kanava nykypäivänä on Facebook. Alusta onkin herättänyt suurta kiinnostusta myös koulutuksen ja opetuksen tutkimuksen saralla. Suurin osa aiemmin tehdystä tutkimuksesta on keskittynyt Facebookin soveltuvuuteen opetusalustana, opiskelijoiden väliseen kommunikointiin sekä kuinka opettajan Facebookin käyttö vaikuttaa hänen uskottavuuteensa. Täten opettajien välistä kommunikointia Facebookissa ei ole juurikaan tutkittu. Tämän kandidaatintutkielman tehtävänä oli selvittää, miksi suomalai…

Bildungsexpansion, soziale Klasse und die Wahl von Latein als Strategie der Distinktion

2021

In times of educational expansion, privileged families are looking for new strategies of distinction. Referring to Pierre Bourdieus theory of distinction, we argue that choosing Latin at school a language that is no longer spoken and therefore has no direct value is one of the strategies of privileged families to set themselves apart from less privileged families. Based on two surveys we conducted at German schools, the paper analyzes the relationship between parents educational background and the probability that their child will learn Latin. Results indicate that historically academic families have the strongest tendency towards learning Latin, followed by new academic famil…

Reflection is understood as an activity which enables the reproduction of past experiences, reflection and meditation about them and their evaluation. One of the most significant features shaping learner reflection may be willingness to communicate in a foreign language – one’s volitional readiness to enter a communicative event in this language. In spite of a wealth of research conducted in this area, it is still unclear why some students are willing to start communication in a foreign language, while others are adamant to avoid it. For the purpose of this paper a qualitative-quantitative study was performed, focusing on four students with very low levels of willingness to communicate in E…

Good English Pronunciation Users and Their Pronunciation Learning Strategies

2015

The study investigates pronunciation learning strategies (PLS) deployed by those with good English pronunciation, as well as their beliefs concerning the variables that affect pronunciation competence. In order to collect data for analysis this study surveyed 61 participants who had learned English as a foreign language. They comprised 28 higher education teachers and scholars specialising in English phonetics and phonology, who were defined as good pronunciation users (GPU), and 33 EFL teacher training students, viewed as average pronunciation learners (APL). This cohort responded to a survey on pronunciation learning strategies and expressed their views on several aspects affecting the L2…

FLIPPING THE ESL CLASSROOM.STRATEGIES FOR COMMUNICATION AND INCLUSION

2015

One of the most interesting and recent teaching approach that is attracting insistently both academic and teaching environments, is the Flipped Classroom, or Inverted Classroom. The class, where there is a turning over of the activities with the purpose of making both lessons and individual study more interesting and productive is “flipped”. This approach is fundamentally based on three issues: 1) a conscious use of technologies for learning/teaching purposes, 2) a revision of learning times, 3) the importance of the educational relationship. The flipped is also an answer to the teacher's aim to solve problems related to the learning process, that means, to create the best condition through…

"Välillä mua on melkein itkettäny mennä luennolle" : advanced language learners' experiences with foreign language anxiety

2014
