Volatile contents of mafic-to-intermediate magmas at San Cristóbal volcano in Nicaragua

San Cristóbal volcano in northwest Nicaragua is one of the most active basaltic–andesitic stratovolcanoes of the Central American Volcanic Arc (CAVA). Here we provide novel constraints on the volcano's magmatic plumbing system, by presenting the first direct measurements of major volatile contents in mafic-to-intermediate glass inclusions from Holocene and historic-present volcanic activity. Olivine-hosted (forsterite [Fo] < 80; Fo< 80) glass inclusions from Holocene tephra layers contain moderate amounts of H2O (0.1–3.3 wt%) and S and Cl up to 2500 μg/g, and define the mafic (basaltic) endmember component. Transcription factor NF-kappaB is essential for the induction of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) II (iNOS) by bacterial lipopolysaccharide in murine macrophages (Xie, Q. The celebrations also included a social event with a feast, in memory of which a humorous menu based on geological eras was issued. The article provides an insight into both the menu and the society's anniversary celebrations.

The effects of ouabain, an inhibitor of the plasmalemmal Na(+)/K(+)-ATPase activity, were examined in human isolated bronchus. Ouabain produced concentration-dependent contraction with -logEC(50)=7.16+/-0.11 and maximal effect of 67+/-4% of the response to acetylcholine (1 mM). Ouabain (10 microM)-induced contraction was epithelium-independent and was not depressed by inhibitors of cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase, antagonists of muscarinic, histamine H(1)-receptors and alpha-adrenoceptors, or neuronal Na(+) channel blockade. This study examined whether a clinically relevant concentration of the volatile anaesthetic halothane modifies the endothelium-dependent relaxation produced by acetylcholine (3 nM-10 microM), histamine (1 pM-0.1 microM) and anti-human immunoglobulin E (1:1000) in human isolated pulmonary arteries submaximally precontracted with noradrenaline. An inhibitor of nitric oxide formation, N(G)-nitro-L-arginine (100 microM), attenuated acetylcholine-induced relaxation but failed to inhibit histamine- and anti-human immunoglobulin E-induced relaxation. We performed a detailed study of silica-rich components (SRC) in the paired CH chondrites Acfer 182 and 207. These SRCs appear either as chondrules or fragments, and they contribute <0.1 vol% to the bulk meteorite. They usually contain a silica and a silicate portion. Both portions are, in most cases, cryptocrystalline and have bulk SiO2-concentrations between 65 and 85 wt%. The silicate generally has a pyroxene normative composition. The silica often appears as blebs within the silicate matrix or vice versa. If there are no blebs, silica and silicate still form rounded interfaces.
