Oxygen isotopes in mammal bone phosphate: A new tool for paleohydrological and paleoclimatological research?

Abstract Oxygen isotope analyses of water in blood of humans and domestic pigs indicate that the oxygen isotope fractionation effects between ingested water and body water are the same in all specimens of the same species. The δ 18 O of body water has been shown to vary linearly with the mean δ 18 O of local meteoric water. This conclusion also holds for the bone phosphate. Thus, δ 18 O ( PO 3− 4 ) values of unaltered fossil bones from humans and domestic pigs can be used to reconstruct the δ 18 O values of local meteoric waters during the life-times of the mammals. Such data can be used for paleohydrological and paleoclimatological studies both on land and at sea.

Wiele dzieci niesie z sobą bagaż przykrych doświadczeń, a co za tym idzie mają znikomą lub żadną zdolność do budowania więzi. Artykuł przedstawia wybrane zagadnienia dotyczące więzi i przywiązania w układzie rodzice zastępczy - dziecko - rodzice biologiczni. Szczególną uwagę zwrócono na Zespół zaburzenia więzi, który dodatkowo komplikuje proces reintegracji rodziny biologicznej.

Artykuł podejmuje problematykę rodzin zastępczych w kontekście pracy socjalnej realizowanej na ich rzecz przez instytucje wspierające, głownie powiatowe centrum pomocy i ośrodki pomocy społecznej. Jako partnerzy instytucje te wraz z reformą systemu pomocy rodzinie i dziecku, zostały zobowiązane do udzielania pomocy rodzinie zastępczej w przezwyciężaniu trudności w opiece nad powierzonymi dziećmi. W artykule podjęto próbę ukazania zakresu działań instytucji pomocy społecznej oraz ich kompetencje i możliwości w zakresie udzielania rodzinom zastępczym pomocy i wsparcia.

The archaeological site of the Pré-du-Plancher is located to the east of Dijon (Burgundy, Côte-d’Or), at the footof a limestone hill in the Basmont valley. This site, dated from the late Bronze Age, is the first to include a stratigraphicalsequence for this period in Burgundy. The settlement comprises of three buildings and several dumps containing potteryfinds. Critical-state effects on microwave losses in type-II superconductors

We discuss the microwave energy losses in superconductors in the critical state. The field-induced variations of the surface resistance are determined, in the framework of the Coffey and Clem model, by taking into account the distribution of the vortex magnetic field inside the sample. It is shown that the effects of the critical state cannot generally be disregarded to account for the experimental data. Results obtained in bulk niobium at low temperatures are quantitatively justified.

Temperature increases driven by climate change are expected to decrease the availability of polyunsaturated fatty acids in lakes worldwide. Nevertheless, a comprehensive understanding of the joint effects of lake trophic status, nutrient dynamics and warming on the availability of these biomolecules is lacking. Here, we conducted a laboratory experiment to study how warming (18–23°C) interacts with phosphorus (0.65–2.58 μM) to affect phytoplankton growth and their production of polyunsaturated fatty acids. GPU accelerated Monte Carlo simulations of lattice spin models

We consider Monte Carlo simulations of classical spin models of statistical mechanics using the massively parallel architecture provided by graphics processing units (GPUs). We discuss simulations of models with discrete and continuous variables, and using an array of algorithms ranging from single-spin flip Metropolis updates over cluster algorithms to multicanonical and Wang-Landau techniques to judge the scope and limitations of GPU accelerated computation in this field. For most simulations discussed, we find significant speed-ups by two to three orders of magnitude as compared to single-threaded CPU implementations.
