Esriinin merkitys syövässä
2014
Tutkimukseni selvittää esriinin tehtäviä ja säätelyä erityisesti syövän kannalta. Esriini kuuluu ERM-proteiiniperheeseen (esriini/radiksiini/moesiini). Nämä proteiinit tarttuvat toisaalta solun aktiinitukirankaan, toisaalta solukalvon reseptoreihin. Esriini vaikuttaa solutukirangan järjestäytymiseen ja solun kortikaalisiin muodonmuutoksiin. Voimistunut esriinin ekspressio korreloi tiettyjen syöpätyyppien maligniteettiin ja erityisesti metastointikykyyn. Esriinin tiedetään esimerkiksi olevan välttämätön osteosarkooman metastaasissa. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli selvittää Src-kinaasin katalysoiman fosforyloinnin merkitystä esriinin toiminnalle syöpään liittyvissä ilmiöissä, esim. invaasiossa j…
Sharing the salt bowl: counterion identity drives N-alkyl resorcinarene affinity for pyrophosphate in water
2021
N-Alkyl ammonium resorcinarene chloride receptors, NARX4, have been shown to act as high-sensitivity detectors of pyrophosphate (PPi), a biomarker of disease, in aqueous media through the chloride-to-PPi exchange [NAR(Cl)4 to NARPPi]. The nature of the anion of the macrocyclic NARX4 (X = Cl−, Br−, triflate OTf−) receptor greatly influences the PPi-affinity in aqueous media. The binding affinity for [NAR (Cl)4] is 3.61 × 105 M−1, while the NAR (Br)4 and NAR (OTf)4 show stronger binding of 5.30 × 105 M−1, and 6.10 × 105 M−1, respectively. The effects of upper rim ammonium cation, –N+H2R substituents (R = 3-hydroxypropyl, cyclohexyl, benzyl, or napththalen-1-ylmethyl), of the macrocyclic resor…
Freeze-out radii extracted from three-pion cumulants in pp, p–Pb and Pb–Pb collisions at the LHC
2014
In high-energy collisions, the spatio-temporal size of the particle production region can be measured using the Bose-Einstein correlations of identical bosons at low relative momentum. The source radii are typically extracted using two-pion correlations, and characterize the system at the last stage of interaction, called kinetic freeze-out. In low-multiplicity collisions, unlike in high-multiplicity collisions, two-pion correlations are substantially altered by background correlations, e.g. mini-jets. Such correlations can be suppressed using three-pion cumulant correlations. We present the first measurements of the size of the system at freeze-out extracted from three-pion cumulant correl…

Flat bands, Dirac cones, and atom dynamics in an optical lattice
2010
We study atoms trapped with a harmonic confinement in an optical lattice characterized by a flat band and Dirac cones. We show that such an optical lattice can be constructed which can be accurately described with the tight binding or Hubbard models. In the case of fermions the release of the harmonic confinement removes fast atoms occupying the Dirac cones while those occupying the flat band remain immobile. Using exact diagonalization and dynamics we demonstrate that a similar strong occupation of the flat band does not happen in bosonic case and furthermore that the mean field model is not capable for describing the dynamics of the boson cloud.
Specific heat of thin phonon cavities at low temperature: Very high values revealed by zeptojoule calorimetry
2022
The specific heat of phonon cavities is investigated in order to analyze the effect of phonon confinement on thermodynamic properties. The specific heat of freestanding very thin SiN membranes in the low-dimensional limit is measured down to very low temperatures (from 6 K to 50 mK). In the whole temperature range, we measured an excess specific heat orders of magnitude bigger than the typical value observed in amorphous solids. Below 1 K, a crossover in cp to a lower power law is seen, and the value of the specific heat of thinner membranes becomes larger than that of thicker ones demonstrating a significant contribution coming from the surface. We show that this high value of the specific…
Labošanas paņēmienu efektivitāte valodu apguves procesā
2015
Phosphorous removal from human urine using lateritic soil
2023
Phosphorous (P) in human urine is among the macronutrients in municipal wastewater that has exacerbated eutrophication of water bodies. Adsorption of P from wastewater using cost effective, environmentally friendly, and efficient adsorbents is considered as an attractive method that can both mitigate the eutrophication problem and augment the already strained P reserves. In the present study the adsorption capacity and structural properties of lateritic soil (LS), the adsorbent for removal of P from human urine, was investigated using XRF, SEM, TGA and FTIR techniques. Batch adsorption experiments were conducted to determine various adsorption parameters such as the sorption rates, the conc…
Spectral function for overoccupied gluodynamics from classical lattice simulations
2019
We study the spectral properties of an overoccupied gluonic system far from equilibrium. Using classical Yang-Mills simulations and linear response theory, we determine the statistical and spectral functions. We measure dispersion relations and damping rates of transversally and longitudinally polarized excitations in the gluonic plasma, and also study further structures in the spectral function.
