They build thin shells of aragonite, a metastable polymorph of calcium carbonate. An integrated calcareous plankton biostratigraphic approach on six sections cropping out in Northern Calabria allowed to define a revised chronostratigraphic framework for Tortonian-Messinian deposits. Four sections have been investigated in the Amantea Basin (Timpone Napoli, Vallone Salina, Case Vespano, and Cozzo Salice) and two in the Rossano Basin (Vallone Casino and Cozzo Sant'Isidoro). Biostratigraphic analyses have been based on quantitative counting of planktonic foraminifers and semiquantitative counting of nannofossils. Quantitative analyses on over 2300 samples were carried ut on late Quaternary calcareous nannofossil assemblages from a central Mediterranean Sea sedimentary sequence (ODP Site 963A). Our results indicate that Emiliania huxleyi dominated the assemblages between 0 and 45.7 kyr BP; Gephyrocapsa muellerae between 45.7 and 177.3 kyr BP; small Gephyrocapsa between 177.3 and 263.5 kyr BP; Gephyrocapsa caribbeanica from 263.5 kyr BP down to the basal sample of our investigation, at about 430 kyr BP A comparison with similar reports from Atlantic Ocean sites indicates that the boundaries of the acme intervals identified in this study fall within the same Marine Isotopic Stages as the Atlantic Ocean…

Osteocytes harbour much potential for paleobiological studies. Synchrotron radiation and spectroscopic analyses are providing fascinating data on osteocyte density, size and orientation in fossil taxa. However, such studies may be costly and time consuming. Here we describe an uncomplicated and inexpensive method to measure osteocyte lacunar densities in bone thin sections. We report on cell lacunar densities in the long bones of various extant and extinct tetrapods, with a focus on sauropodomorph dinosaurs, and how lacunar densities can help us understand bone formation rates in the iconic sauropod dinosaurs. La motte médiévale de Drosnay (Marne) : résultats de deux sondages archéologiques

Deux opérations de diagnostic réalisées en 2008 et 2009 ont permis de mettre au jour un segment du fossé d’enceinte d’une motte répertoriée depuis le XIXe s., ainsi que les restes d’un bâtiment en pierre sur sa partie sommitale. Le fossé a livré un mobilier dont la chronologie est centrée sur le XIIIe s. alors que le bâtiment n’est pas antérieur au XVe s. Les remaniements ayant affecté ce site sont nombreux. Dès le XVe s. d’importants travaux de remblaiement et de nivellement semblent modifier l’angle sud-ouest de la motte. Cependant, ce sont les terrassements contemporains qui ont irrémédiablement détruit la plus grande part des vestiges. Seule la basse-cour peut désormais conserver des ve…
