Incorporation of Silica Nanospherical Particles into Epoxy-Amine Crosslinked Materials

Composites of silica nanospheres coated with crosslinked epoxy–amine were synthesised and examined by 29Si-magic-angle-spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The most representative fact is that epoxy-modified nanospheres lost less weight at high temperatures. At temperatures greater than 300°C the loss of weight for epoxy-modified nanospheres was rather lower than for unmodified nanospheres. This helped them to retain their structures, as the loss of weight can have adverse effects on network defects, due to the loss of crosslinks by unit of volume.

A new eco-friendly chemical treatment of natural fibres: Effect of sodium bicarbonate on properties of sisal fibre and its epoxy composites

Abstract Several researchers have shown how sisal fibres possess remarkable tensile properties that yield them good candidates as reinforcement in biocomposite materials. This work aims to evaluate the effect of an eco-friendly and cost effective surface treatment method based on the use of commercial sodium bicarbonate (i.e. baking soda) on properties of sisal fibre and its epoxy composites. The role of nanoparticles in decreased washout of underwater concrete

Abstract The paper presents research results of the influence of SiO2 nanoparticles on the washout of underwater concrete and hardened concrete. Based on infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and thermogravimetric (TGA) analyses of the applied anti-washout admixture (AWA), its chemical structure was determined. A beneficial effect of SiO2 nanoparticles on the reduction of the mix washout was demonstrated and the most probable reason for that phenomenon was given, taking into account the AWA chemical structure and its behaviour in the concrete mix environment. It was found that a dosing method of AWA and nanoparticles to the concrete influenced the washout.

Modification of polyoxymethylene for increased thermal resistance

Ternary nanocomposites, composed of polyoxymethylene (POM), ethylene octene copolymer and zinc oxide (ZnO), are prepared by melt compounding. The effects of two types of ethylene-octene copolymers, differing with α-octene content (38% for EOC38 and 17% for EOC17), as well as nanostructured ZnO on thermal behavior of POM are investigated. The content of EOC in the POM based composites is varied between 10 and 50 wt%, while the content of ZnO is 2 wt%. Thermal behavior of POM based systems are studied by using differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis coupled with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Comparative study of historical woods from XIX century by thermogravimetry coupled with FTIR spectroscopy

Thermal and structural properties of historical woods from apparatuses of the Historical Collection of the Physics Instruments of the University of Palermo have been investigated by FTIR spectroscopy coupled with thermogravimetric analysis. Specifically, the wooden portions of apparatuses from XIX century have been studied. The investigated woods belong to different taxa (Swietenia mahagoni, Picea abies and Juglans regia). Hierarchical structure and cytocompatibility of fish scales from Carassius auratus

Abstract To study the structure and the cytocompatibility of fish scales from Carassius auratus , scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to observe the morphology of fish scales treated with different processing methods. Based on varying morphologies and components, the fish scales can be divided into three regions on the surface and three layers in vertical. The functions of these three individual layers were analyzed. SEM results show that the primary inorganic components are spherical or cubic hydroxyapatite (HA) nanoparticles. Gravimetric and FTIR study of the interaction of tetramethylethylene on a MFI zeolite

The adsorption of tetramethylethylene on a high siliceous ZSM-5 zeolite was performed by thermogravimetry, in situ FTIR spectroscopy and molecular dynamics simulation. Sorption and spectroscopic data were analysed as a function of loading and compared with molecular dynamics simulated results to characterize the adsorption process. The isotherm at 298 K does not show any deviation from the type I behaviour. The presence of admolecules in micropores does not or weakly affect zeolite framework vibration bands but induces an additional band at around 1715 cm−1 mainly due to a contribution of the microporous surface of the adsorbent. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, followed by linear discriminant analysis of the spectral data, was used to classify Italian Pecorino cheeses according to their ripening time and manufacturing technique. The Fourier transform infrared spectra of the cheeses were divided into 18 regions and the normalized absorbance peak areas within these regions were used as predictors. Linear discriminant analysis models were constructed to classify Pecorino cheeses according to different ripening stages (hard and semi-hard) or according to their manufacturing technique (fossa and nonfossa cheeses).
