Applying extracellular vesicles based therapeutics in clinical trials - an ISEV position paper.

Extracellular vesicles (EVs), such as exosomes and microvesicles, are released by different cell types and participate in physiological and pathophysiological processes. EVs mediate intercellular communication as cell-derived extracellular signalling organelles that transmit specific information from their cell of origin to their target cells. As a result of these properties, EVs of defined cell types may serve as novel tools for various therapeutic approaches, including (a) anti-tumour therapy, (b) pathogen vaccination, (c) immune-modulatory and regenerative therapies and (d) drug delivery. Analytical strategies for organic food packaging contaminants

In this review, we present current approaches in the analysis of food-packaging contaminants. Gas and liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry detection have been widely used in the analysis of some relevant families of these compounds such as primary aromatic amines, bisphenol A, bisphenol A diglycidyl ether and related compounds, UV-ink photoinitiators, perfluorinated compounds, phthalates and non-intentionally added substances. Characterization of melt-polymerized polycarbonate: preparative fractionation, branching distribution and simulation

Melt-polymerized bisphenol-A polycarbonate materials characterized by a low degree of branching were fractionated according to molecular weight by the continuous polymer fractionation (CPF) method. The distribution of two types of end-groups and in-chain salicylate moieties arising from thermal rearrangement reactions were assessed across the molecular weight distribution by analysis of the fractions. Experimentally determined branching densities of the fractions agreed well with a molecular simulation based on a random sampling polycondensation model. Mineralogy and geochemistry of Terra Rossa soils, western Sicily: insights into heavy metal fractionation and mobility

Abstract The distribution of heavy metals in typical Terra Rossa soils and their partitioning in specific soil phases are estimated on the basis of the comparative evaluation of bulk contents, results from sequential chemical extraction procedure (SEP) and scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray analysis ( SEM EDX ). A general natural enrichment of heavy metals with respect to average soil is observed. Cadmium proves to be remarkably high (up to 2.4 ppm). Large amounts of Fe, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn occur in the ‘residual’ fraction. Accurate trace element analysis of speleothems and biogenic calcium carbonates by LA-ICP-MS

The high spatial resolution of laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) microanalysis of speleothems and biogenic calcium carbonates makes it possible to improve our understanding of past climatic conditions. However, there are analytical problems associated with this method, such as molecular interferences, elemental fractionation, and mass-load-dependent matrix effects, when using NIST silicate reference glasses for calibration. Our study with a sector-field ICP-MS shows that many masses are affected by interferences, such as 24Mg+ by 48Ca++ or 31P+ by 15N16O+. Clumped isotope analysis of carbonates: comparison of two different acid digestion techniques

RATIONALE The kinetic nature of the phosphoric acid digestion reaction enables clumped isotope analysis of carbonates using gas source isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS). In most laboratories acid digestions are performed at 25°C in sealed vessels or at 90°C in a common acid bath. Here we show that different Δ47 results are obtained depending on the digestion technique employed. METHODS Several replicates of a biogenic aragonite and NBS 19 were reacted with 104% H3PO4 in sealed vessels at 25°C and at 90°C using a common acid bath. Abstract. The geochemical signature of many speleothems used for reconstruction of past continental climates is affected by kinetic isotope fractionation. This limits quantitative paleoclimate reconstruction and, in cases where the kinetic fractionation varies with time, also affects relative paleoclimate interpretations. In carbonate archive research, clumped isotope thermometry is typically used as proxy for absolute temperatures. Climatic dependence of stable carbon and oxygen isotope signals recorded in speleothems: From soil water to speleothem calcite

Abstract Understanding the relationship between stable isotope signals recorded in speleothems (δ 13 C and δ 18 O) and the isotopic composition of the carbonate species in the soil water is of great importance for their interpretation in terms of past climate variability. Modelling the δ18O value of cave drip water and speleothem calcite

Abstract Stable isotope signals recorded in speleothems have provided important insights about past climate variability in recent years. Quantitative reconstruction of mean annual temperature and the amount of precipitation, however, remains difficult because the stable isotope signals are influenced by various processes. Here we present a drip water model, which shows how these climate parameters affect the oxygen isotope signal of cave drip water.
