Pomological, Sensorial, Nutritional and Nutraceutical Profile of Seven Cultivars of Cherimoya (Annona cherimola Mill)
2020
In this work, the food quality of four international (Campas, Chaffey, Fino de Jete and White) and three local (Daniela, Torre1 and Torre2) cultivars of Cherimoya (Annona cherimola Mill) was investigated. With this aim, pomological traits, sensorial attributes, physiochemical parameters (pH, total soluble content and total acidity), nutritional composition (macro- and micro-nutrients) and nutraceutical values (bioactive compounds, radical scavenging and antioxidant properties) were evaluated. Among the seven observed cultivars, Fino de Jete was identified as the best, not only for its commercial attributes such as pomological traits and physiochemical values, but also for its nutritional co…
Transient IR spectroscopy identifies key interactions and unravels new intermediates in the photocycle of a bacterial phytochrome.
2020
Phytochromes are photosensory proteins in plants, fungi, and bacteria, which detect red- and far-red light. They undergo a transition between the resting (Pr) and photoactivated (Pfr) states. In bacterial phytochromes, the Pr-to-Pfr transition is facilitated by two intermediate states, called Lumi-R and Meta-R. The molecular structures of the protein in these states are not known and the molecular mechanism of photoconversion is not understood. Here, we apply transient infrared absorption spectroscopy to study the photocycle of the wild-type and Y263F mutant of the phytochrome from Deinococcus radiodurans (DrBphP) from nanoto milliseconds. We identify two sequentially forming Lumi-R states …
Biological Causes of Anterior Knee Pain
2012
We review the pathophysiology of anterior knee pain in the young patient. Emphasis is placed on newer findings. We have developed what we call the “Neural Model” as an explanation for the genesis of anterior knee pain. We have demonstrated a neuroanatomical basis for PFPS in the young patient and the clinical observation that the lateral retinaculum may have a key role in the origin of this pain. According to our studies we hypothesize that periodic short episodes of ischemia in the lateral retinaculum could be implicated in the pathogenesis of anterior knee pain, at least in a subgroup of anterior knee pain patients, by triggering neural proliferation of nociceptive axons (substance P posi…
Fabrication and characterisation of ZnO nanostructures: from nanoscale building blocks to hybrid nanomaterials - towards emerging technologies in sen…
2012
Metal oxide nanostructures characterized by multiple morphologies and structures are at the forefront of applications driven nanotechnology research. In particular, they represent a versatile solution for performance enhancement and applications in multifunctional devices and offer distinct advantages over their bulk counterparts. The current state in ZnO nanomaterials research and its impact in nanotechnology and modern engineering are discussed through the lens of con-tinuing technological advances in synthetic techniques allowing to obtain the material with predefined specific set of criteria including size, functionality, and uniqueness. Aim of this research activity is fabrication and …

Computational modeling of protein diffusion in the cell nucleus using the lattice-Boltzmann method
2012
The number of fluorescence applications and methods of analysis is growing in the biological and related sciences. The aim of this work was to accurately determine the diffusion coefficient in nucleus, diffusion in the cytoplasm and nucleo-cytoplasmic translocation should be considered as well. Fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (FRAP) experiments were used in order to study protein diffusion. A numerical model for FRAP was used to determine the diffusion properties of proteins. The present method removed the difficulties of the conventional analysis, could produce, interesting results for protein diffusion in the cell.
