Reading traffic signs while driving: Are linguistic word properties relevant in a complex, dynamic environment?

When driving a vehicle, do we read the words displayed on traffic signs just as we do in more standard conditions? In the driving context, stimulus quality is generally worse, and reading has to be performed at the same time as we are doing other tasks. In the present work, we examined the effects of word frequency and word length on reading in such circumstances. A stimulus presentation mimicking the approach to the traffic sign increased the effect of word frequency, but not the effect of word length, on reading latency. Wavelet Frames Generated by Spline Based p-Filter Banks

This chapter presents a design scheme to generate tight and so-called semi-tight frames in the space of discrete-time periodic signals. The frames originate from oversampled perfect reconstruction periodic filter banks. The filter banks are derived from discrete-time and discrete periodic splines. Each filter bank comprises one linear phase low-pass filter (in most cases interpolating) and one high-pass filter, whose magnitude response mirrors that of a low-pass filter. Periodic Orthogonal Wavelets and Wavelet Packets

In this chapter, we discuss how to derive versatile families of periodic discrete-time orthogonal wavelets and wavelet packets from discrete and discrete-time splines outlined in Chap. 3. These wavelets and wavelet packets, although not having compact supports, are well localized in the time domain. They can have any number of discrete vanishing moments. Their DFT spectra tend to have a rectangular shape when the spline order grows and provide a collection of refined splits of the Nyquist frequency band. The wavelet and wavelet packet transforms are implemented in a fast way using the FFT.

Interference excision algorithm for frequency hopping spread spectrum based on undecimated wavelet packet transform

An algorithm for reducing narrowband interference effects in frequency hopping spread spectrum is presented. The method is based on the undecimated wavelet packet transform. It improves the performance obtained by other methods. Experimental results demonstrate the suitability of the algorithm.

Saturated absorption spectroscopy: elimination of crossover resonances by use of a nanocell

It is demonstrated that velocity selective optical pumping/saturation resonances of reduced absorption in a Rb vapor nanocell with thickness \textit{L=} $\lambda $, 2$\lambda $, and 3$\lambda $ (resonant wavelength $\lambda $ = 780 nm) allow the complete elimination of crossover (CO) resonances. We observe well pronounced resonances corresponding to the F$_{g}=3$ $\to $ F$_{e}=2,3,4$ hyperfine transitions of the $^{85}$Rb D$_{2}$ line with linewidths close to the natural width. A small CO resonance located midway between F$_{g}=3$ $\to $ F$_{e}=3$ and F$_{g}=3$ $\to$ F$_{e}=4$ transitions appears only for \textit{L} = 4$\lambda $. Analysis of multi degree of freedom systems with fractional derivative elements of rational order

In this paper a novel method based on complex eigenanalysis in the state variables domain is proposed to uncouple the set of rational order fractional differential equations governing the dynamics of multi-degree-of-freedom system. The traditional complex eigenanalysis is appropriately modified to be applicable to the coupled fractional differential equations. This is done by expanding the dimension of the problem and solving the system in the state variable domain. Examples of applications are given pertaining to multi-degree-of-freedom systems under both deterministic and stochastic loads.

Test Procedures in Configural Frequency Analysis (CFA) Controlling the Local and Multiple Level

The test statistics used until now in the CFA have been developed under the assumption of the overall hypothesis of total independence. Therefore, the multiple test procedures based on these statistics are really only different tests of the overall hypothesis. If one likes to test a special cell hypothesis, one should only assume that this hypothesis is true and not the whole overall hypothesis. Such cell tests can then be used as elements of a multiple test procedure. Sequentially Rejective Test Procedures for Detecting Outlying Cells in One- and Two-Sample Multinomial Experiments

For multiple testing of multinomial models in the case of one or two samples we propose using test procedures based on the principle described by MARCUS, PERITZ and GABRIEL (1976). These methods are based in each step of the sequentially rejective strategy on tests which exhaust the full α level (i.e. which are not conservative). The tests can be performed in a finite or asymptotic version.
