Single photon MIR upconversion detector at room temperature with a PPLN ridge waveguide

International audience; In this paper we describe an upconversion detector in the mid infrared (around 3.5 μm). We take advantage of the PPLN ridge waveguide technology to achieve single photon detection at room temperature on a single spatial mode. With a pump power of 192 mW we obtain a detection efficiency of 0.4% for 22k dark count per second, which corresponds to a noise equivalent power of 3.0 fW · Hz−1/2 and an internal conversion efficiency of 85 %/W of pump.

Environmental effects on the natural vibrations of nanoplatelets: a high pressure study.

International audience; Resonant acoustic modes from ultrathin CdS colloidal nanoplatelets (NPLs) are probed under high pressure using low frequency Raman spectroscopy. In particular we focus on the characterization of the recently evidenced mass load effect that is responsible for a significant downshift of the NPL breathing frequency due to the inert mass of organic ligands. We show that a key parameter in the observation of the mass effect is whether the surrounding medium is able to support THz acoustic wave propagation, at a frequency close to that of the inorganic vibrating core. Second zero dispersion wavelength measurement through soliton self-frequency shift compensation in suspended core fibre

International audience; A simple experimental technique to evaluate the second zero dispersion wavelength of very small core microstrutured fibres is described. Based on the effect of soliton self-frequency shift and its subsequent compensation in the vicinity of the second zero dispersion. the proposed method is applied to both standard and suspended core microstructured fibres by simply measuring the frequency stabilised soliton spectrum, avoiding any calculation and knowledge of any experimental parameters.

Swarming of micron-sized hematite cubes in a rotating magnetic field -- Experiments

Energy input by under-field rotation of particles drives the systems to emergent non-equilibrium states. Here we investigate the suspension of rotating magnetic cubes. Micron-sized hematite cubes are synthesized and observed microscopically. When exposed to a rotating magnetic field, they form rotating swarms that interact with each other like liquid droplets. We describe the swarming behaviour and its limits and characterize swarm size and angular velocity dependence on magnetic field strength and frequency. New theoretical and experimental concepts for frequency generation in optical fibers: modulation instability, pulsed Raman Laser and kinetic approach…

Following a brief introduction to optical fibers, we combine the effect of modulational instability and Raman self-frequency shift to generate a frequency combs with a spectral width higher than 100 nm and a central frequency shifted towards higher wavelengths. Then, the stimulated Raman effect is used in a ring cavity coupled with nonlinear polarization rotation and polarization filtering. A pulsed regime is obtained at the wavelength of the first Stokes emission and presents a rich zoology of experimental dynamic pulsed regimes. Reduced herbicide use does not increase crop yield loss if it is compensated by alternative preventive and curative measures

Herbicide use must be reduced because of environmental and health issues. This raises the question of whether weeds and the resulting crop yield loss will increase. Previous studies analysing relationships between herbicide use intensity, weeds and yield loss suffer from methodological shortcomings in terms of weed flora and farm diversity as well as temporal scales. Here, we collected data on 272 arable cropping systems from one Spanish and six French regions, from farm surveys, the Biovigilance-Flore network, expert opinion, cropping system trials, crop advisors and scientists. Chapter 68 - Identification of Key Gin Aroma Compounds: An Integrative Approach Based on an Original Selection Procedure

International audience; Potential impact aroma compounds of gin have been identified using Gas Chromatogry Olfactometry Mass-Spectrometry (GC-O-MS). In order to select some of them for a recombination study, we developed a specific procedure. Instead of only choosing the compounds on criteria such as their odor quality or their odor activity values, we also used physico-chemical parameters and information on their botanical origin. Data were organized in blocks homogeneous in terms of parameter type. Different statistical treatments were used in order to classify the compounds either by analyzing the parameters altogether or separately block by block.
