A SUMOylation-defective MITF germline mutation predisposes to melanoma and renal carcinoma
2011
International audience; So far, no common environmental and/or phenotypic factor has been associated with melanoma and renal cell carcinoma (RCC). The known risk factors for melanoma include sun exposure, pigmentation and nevus phenotypes; risk factors associated with RCC include smoking, obesity and hypertension. A recent study of coexisting melanoma and RCC in the same patients supports a genetic predisposition underlying the association between these two cancers. The microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF) has been proposed to act as a melanoma oncogene; it also stimulates the transcription of hypoxia inducible factor (HIF1A), the pathway of which is targeted by kidney canc…
Effects of resistance training frequency on muscle strength, activity and mass during a 24-week intervention in the elderly
2016
Elderly populations are increasingly affected by sarcopenia, dynapenia and osteoporosis. They all increase frailty and decrease quality of life and life-expectancy. Resistance training (RT) has been reported extensively as a tool that can prevent, counter and in some cases reverse the course of the abovementioned diseases. Several studies covering RT adaptations in elderly populations have investigated periods between 6 up to 88 weeks with different frequencies, from 1 to 3 trainings / week and a wide range of intensities (30-85% or one repetition maximum) and different volumes. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of different training frequencies (one, two or three times / …
Analysis of HLA-DRB1,DQA1,DQB1 haplotypes in Sardinian centenarians
2008
Some genetic determinants of longevity might reside in those polymorphisms for the immune system genes that regulate immune responses. Many longevity association studies focused their attention on HLA (the human MHC) polymorphisms, but discordant results have been obtained. Sardinians are a relatively isolate population and represent a suitable population for association studies. Some HLA-DR and DQ alleles form very stable haplotypes with a strong linkage disequilibrium. In a previous study on Sardinian centenarians we have suggested that HLA-DRB1 *15 allele might be marginally associated to longevity. HLA-DR,DQ haplotypes are in strong linkage disequilibrium and well conserved playing a ro…
Association of different tumor necrosis factor α promoter allele frequencies with ankylosing spondylitis in HLA-B27 positive individuals
1998
OBJECTIVE To investigate the potential association of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFalpha) promoter alleles with ankylosing spondylitis. METHODS DNA from 141 HLA-B27 positive Caucasian patients with ankylosing spondylitis and 46 B27-positive and 99 B27-negative healthy Caucasian controls was investigated by polymerase chain reaction amplification of the TNFalpha promoter region and subsequent dot-blot analysis with allele-specific oligonucleotides. RESULTS There was a significant decrease in the promoter alleles TNF-238.2 and TNF-308.2 in the ankylosing spondylitis group (266 wild-type alleles, 16 variant alleles) compared with the B27-positive (75 wildtype promoter alleles, 17 variant al…
HLA class II haplotypes differentiate between the adult autoimmune polyglandular syndrome types II and III.
2013
Background: Genetics of the adult autoimmune polyglandular syndrome (APS) is poorly understood. Aim: The aim of this study was to gain further insight into the genetics of the adult APS types. Site: The study was conducted at a university referral center. Methods: The human leukocyte antigen (HLA) class II alleles, haplotypes, and genotypes were determined in a large cohort of patients with APS, autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD), and type 1 diabetes and in healthy controls by the consistent application of high-resolution typing at a four-digit level. Results: Comparison of the allele and haplotype frequencies significantly discriminated patients with APS vs AITD and controls. The HLA class…
Hearing loss in facioscapulohumeral dystrophy.
1986
Bilateral sloping high frequency hearing loss of 20–90 dB was found in six out of ten patients with infantile or adolescent onset FSHD. In all cases the basic defect could be traced to the cochlea. The outer hair cells of the basal turn are predominantly affected. In 20 patients with various other forms of muscular dystrophy or neuromuscular disorders with an FSH distribution, no sensorineural hearing loss was found. Myopathology of FSHD patients extended from mild to severe, often showing inflammatory infiltrates and type I fibre atrophy, without unequivocal differences between the two groups with and without hearing loss. It is concluded that cochlear dysfunction is a specific and frequen…
Piemēru veidi mūsdienu angļu valodas mācību vārdnīcās
2019
THE APPLICATION OF NEEDLE RADIOFREQUENCY FOR THE REDUCTION OF ACNE SCARS: A CASE STUDY.
2019
Background: Acne fulminans can leaveunsightly scars that can have a detrimental effect on a person’s ability to function in society, resulting in a deterioration in the overall quality of life of these patients. Scientific research shows that problems with self-esteemmay lower a person’s quality of life, making them reluctant to interact with other people. This, in turn, may lead to depression and, in extreme cases, to suicide. For people who suffer from acne fulminans, this is an extremely serious problem. This is compounded by the fact that even if they spend much of their life fighting acne, ultimately successfully, they still may be left with the visual effects of the disease, like scars.…
La circulation des emprunts néologiques dans le domaine de la mode en tchèque et en français dans une perspective diachronique
2018
The main goal of this paper is to compare a sample of neological loanwords from the fashion sector in French and Czech. The idea of the comparative conception mentioned in the title of the article is based on the international project entitled “EmpNéo” (Neological Loanwords), which aims to compare the diffusion of neological loanwords in various languages. In this study, we would like to present only a part of this project and analyze the new terms related to the fashion industry that appeared in the two respective languages. The corpus is based on our own knowledge and personal experiences. All lexemes were selected from the press, so it represents the written form of language. This method…
Electrocatheter-mediated High-voltage Pulsed Radiofrequency of the Dorsal Root Ganglion in the Treatment of Chronic Lumbosacral Neuropathic Pain
2019
Objectives: Despite the interest in scientific community, there is still poor evidence about pulsed radiofrequency (PRF) efficacy in the treatment of neuropathic pain. In order to determine whether high-voltage PRF and epidural adhesiolysis (PRF-EA) showed better results than epidural adhesiolysis alone (EA), a randomized, double-blind, comparative-effectiveness study was conducted in patients with chronic lumbosacral radiating pain and neuropathic features. Materials and Methods: A total of 41 patients were randomly allocated to 2 groups. Twenty-one patients were randomized to receive 2 cycles of 240 seconds high-voltage PRF followed by the injection of local anesthetics, hyaluronidase, an…
