Interaction between gene variants of the serotonin transporter promoter region (5-HTTLPR) and catecholO-methyltransferase (COMT) in borderline person…
2008
Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by a heterogeneous symptomatology with instability in impulse control, interpersonal relationships and self-image. BPD patients display repeated self-injury, chronic suicidal tendencies and emotional dysregulation, mainly dysregulation of negative affect. In its etiology, genetic and environmental factors have been suggested. Recently, an investigation in male healthy volunteers found gene–gene effects of the catechol-O-methyl-transferase (COMT) low-activity (Met158) and the low-expression allele of the deletion/insertion (short/long or S/L, respectively) polymorphism in the serotonin transporter-linked promoter region (5-HTTLPR) on the…
Measuring postural-related changes of spontaneous baroreflex sensitivity after repeated long-duration diving: Frequency domain approaches
2012
Sustained water immersion is thought to modulate orthostatic tolerance to an extent dependent on the duration and repetition over consecutive days of the diving sessions. We tested this hypothesis investigating in ten healthy subjects the potential changes in the cardiovascular response to head-up tilt induced by single and multiple resting air dives. Parametric cross-spectral analysis of spontaneous RR interval and systolic arterial pressure variability was performed in three experimental sessions: before diving (BD), after single 6-hour dive (ASD), and after multiple 6-hour dives (AMD, 5 consecutive days with 18-hour surface interval). From this analysis, baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) was …
Lack of association of the -463 G/A myeloperoxidase promoter polymorphism with Behcet's disease in Italian patients.
2007
Objective. To investigate potential associations between the 463G/A myeloperoxidase (MPO) promoter polymorphism and susceptibility to, and clinical expression of, Behcet's disease (BD). Methods. One hundred and seventy-five Italian patients who satisfied the International Study Group criteria for BD and 235 healthy age- and sex-matched blood donors were genotyped for the 463G/A promoter polymorphism of the MPO gene by molecular methods. The patients were subgrouped according to the presence or absence of clinical manifestations. Results. The distribution of allele and genotype frequencies of the MPO 463A/G polymorphism did not differ significantly between the BD patients and the healthy…
The Intracranial Distribution of Gliomas in Relation to Exposure From Mobile Phones: Analyses From the INTERPHONE Study
2016
When investigating the association between brain tumors and use of mobile telephones, accurate data on tumor position are essential, due to the highly localized absorption of energy in the human brain from the radio-frequency fields emitted. We used a point process model to investigate this association using information that included tumor localization data from the INTERPHONE Study (Australia, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, and the United Kingdom). Our main analysis included 792 regular mobile phone users diagnosed with a glioma between 2000 and 2004. Similar to earlier results, we found a statistically significant association …
Body weight changes and the A-6G polymorphism of the angiotensinogen gene
2002
BACKGROUND: The objective of the study was to analyze the relationship of polymorphisms of the angiotensinogen gene with changes in body weight during 3 y of antihypertensive treatment, in a group of young adults with essential hypertension. METHODS: Essential hypertensives, less than 50 y old, never previously treated with antihypertensive drugs and in the absence of diabetes mellitus were included. After the initial evaluation, patients were treated using only non-pharmacological measures (n=29), β-blockers (n=40) or angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (n=66). Resting blood pressure, biochemical profile and body weight at the beginning and yearly were measured. The polymorphism A-6G …
Choice of spatial frequency for contrast sensitivity evaluation after corneal refractive surgery.
2002
ABSTRACT PURPOSE: To study the utility of measurements of contrast sensitivity at different spatial frequencies as an index of visual recovery following refractive surgery. METHODS: Contrast sensitivity at 1.5, 3, 6, 12, and 18 c/deg was measured with the Stereo Optical FACT chart in 20 patients after photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) using the Nidek EC-5000 excimer laser system, and in 18 patients following laser in situ keratomileusis (LASER). Contrast sensitivity was measured preoperatively and 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after surgery. RESULTS: Results showed a statistically significant reduction (P<01) in contrast sensitivity at all spatial frequencies in PRR patients during the first an…
Clinical observations and risk factors for tinnitus in a Sicilian cohort.
2014
The aims of this study were to determine the distribution of risk factors associated with tinnitus analysing their role in the development of tinnitus and the effects of their interaction; to evidence the importance of a suitable and adequate clinical and audiologic assessment to avoid those modifiable risk factors responsible for cochlear dysfunction and tinnitus onset. 46 subjects with tinnitus and 74 controls were studied according to: age, sex, Body Mass Index (BMI), neck circumference, tobacco smoking, feeling fatigue or headache, self reporting snoring, hypertension, diabetes, coronary heart disease, and/or hyperlipidemia, and laboratory finding as lipid profile and levels of reactive…
Differences in visual performance of AcrySof ReSTOR IOL in high and low myopic eyes.
2009
PURPOSE To determine the differences in refractive and visual results obtained in eyes with high and low myopia after multifocal intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. METHODS Monocular visual acuity for distance and near, with and without distance correction, and photopic and mesopic contrast sensitivity were measured at 6 months after surgery in 152 myopic eyes implanted with the AcrySof ReSTOR Natural (SN60D3) IOL. Two groups were created: high and low myopia (76 eyes in each). RESULTS Monocular best distance-corrected visual acuity was 0.02+/-0.06 logMAR for low myopes and 0.05+/-0.09 logMAR for high myopes. Monocular best distance-corrected near visual acuity was 0.04+/-0.05 and 0.07+/-0…
Sex differences in allelic frequencies of the 5-HT2C Cys23Ser polymorphism in psychiatric patients and healthy volunteers: findings from an associati…
2000
Polymorphisms in the serotonergic system are believed to play a role in the etiology and treatment of different psychiatric illnesses. The 5-HT2C receptor gene is X-linked, with a frequent mutation at nucleotide 68 leading to a Ser-->Cys transition at amino acid 23. Recent studies have demonstrated an impaired function of 5-HT2C receptors and an increased production of the major noradrenergic metabolite 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylethyleneglycol in the cerebrospinal fluid among the subjects carrying the Ser23 allele (Lappalainen et al., 1999). Biol. Psychiatry 46:821). We genotyped patients with alcohol dependence, panic disorder without agoraphobia, generalized anxiety disorder, narcolepsy an…
First clinical postmarketing experiences in the treatment of epilepsies with brivaracetam: a retrospective observational multicentre study.
2019
ObjectivesBrivaracetam (BRV) is the latest approved antiepileptic drug and acts as a synaptic vesicle protein 2A ligand. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of BRV in the clinical setting.DesignRetrospective, observational multicentre study.SettingWe retrospectively collected clinical data of patients who received BRV in 10 epilepsy centres using a questionnaire that was answered by the reporting neurologist.ParticipantsData of 615 epilepsy patients treated with BRV were included in the study.Primary and secondary outcome measuresEfficacy regarding seizure frequency and tolerability of BRV were evaluated. Descriptive statistics complemented by X2 conti…
