Guided Wave Propagation in a Plate Edge and Application to NDI of Rail Base

2012

The analysis of guided wave propagation in a plate edge can be useful for some applications, such as for the inspection of the rail base. Here guided waves generated by a laser beam hitting, on the inclined surface, a solid media with trapezoidal cross-section have been studied. We have found that, for the geometry investigated, two guided waves propagate along both free surfaces of the plate, with same velocity and frequency. The analysis of the trajectories of the two material points, due to waves propagation, shows that the wave packets can be identified as Rayleigh waves. The presence of S0 Lamb mode, with low frequency and low amplitude, has been revealed too. As an example of a possib…

Control circuit design of the L-LC resonant inverter for induction heating

2002

In this article, the frequency variation control strategy for an induction heating L-LC resonant inverter is analyzed. The control consists of three loops, which are analyzed and reduced to their corresponding small-signal block diagrams. From these diagrams, the optimal structure of the compensation network and the design boundaries for first order closed-loop response are derived. The special case of phase limitation is analyzed because it is unstable in open-loop operation. Finally the implementation of the control circuit is described and experimental results are shown.

Synchronization techniques for power quality instruments

2004

The measurement of voltage characteristics in power systems requires the accurate estimation of the power supply frequency and signal synchronization, even in the presence of disturbances. The authors developed and tested two innovative techniques for instrument synchronization. The first is based on signal spectral analysis techniques performed by means of the Chirp-Z transform analysis. The second is a phase-locked loop (PLL) software based on a time-domain coordinate transformation and an innovative phase-detection technique. To evaluate how synchronization techniques are adversely affected by the application of a disturbing influence, experimental tests were carried out, taking into acc…

Genetic Algorithm Optimized Grid-based RF Fingerprint Positioning in Heterogeneous Small Cell Networks

2015

In this paper we propose a novel optimization algorithm for grid-based RF fingerprinting to improve user equipment (UE) positioning accuracy. For this purpose we have used Multi-objective Genetic Algorithm (MOGA) which enables autonomous calibration of gridcell layout (GCL) for better UE positioning as compared to that of the conventional fingerprinting approach. Performance evaluations were carried out using two different training data-sets consisting of Minimization of Drive Testing measurements obtained from a dynamic system simulation in a heterogeneous LTE small cell environment. The robustness of the proposed method has been tested analyzing positioning results from two different area…

Attenuation of low frequency magnetic fields produced by HV underground power cables

2015

High-voltage underground cable systems are becoming more common as the demand for electrical power within urban centers increase, also considering the difficulties in building new overhead power lines in the vicinity of city centers because of authorization issues. Therefore, interest towards the evaluation of magnetic fields produced by high-voltage power lines has been triggered during the last decade and concern about effects on human health of exposure to extra low frequency (ELF) magnetic fields due to power lines has been increasing as well. Hence, the evaluation of the magnetic field produced by underground power cables is important in order to develop methods for mitigating their in…

Sparsity-aware narrowband interference mitigation and subcarriers selection in OFDM-based cognitive radio networks

2016

In this paper, the performance of an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing overlay cognitive radio network with subcarrier selection schemes is investigated. We propose three subcarrier selection techniques that reduce the level of interference at the primary base station based on collected channel state information from the different network nodes. Approximated outage probability expressions are also derived and verified by simulations for the different studied techniques. In addition, we propose and investigate a new approach for asynchronous narrowband interference (NBI) estimation and mitigation in cognitive radio networks. The proposed approach does not require prior knowledge of …

A Sparsity-Aware Approach for NBI Estimation and Mitigation in Large Cognitive Radio Networks

2016

Underlay cognitive networks should follow strict interference thresholds to operate in parallel with primary networks. This constraint limits their transmission power and eventually the coverage area. Therefore, in this paper, we first design a new approach for asynchronous narrow-band interference (NBI) estimation and mitigation in orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing cognitive radio networks that does not require prior knowledge of the NBI characteristics. Our proposed approach allows the primary user to exploit the sparsity of the secondary users' interference signal to recover it and cancel it based on sparse signal recovery theory. We also propose two subcarrier selection schemes…

Combined Analysis of OFDM-UWB Transmission in Hybrid Wireless-Optical Access Networks

2009

[EN] The hybrid wireless-optical transmission of ultra-wideband signals employing orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing modulation (OFDM) ultra-wideband (UWB) as defined in the ECMA-368 standard is experimentally analyzed in this letter. The OFDM-UWB signals provide 400 Mb/s per user at optical distances from 5 to 50 km on standard single-mode fiber (SSMF). The analysis includes the wireless radiation from 0 to 3 m after optical transmission. The results indicate a maximum error-vector-magnitude degradation of 2.5 dB measured at 1.5-m radio after 50-km SSMF optical transmission for the first two UWB channels. This degradation translates to 1-m maximum wireless-reach penalty.

Experimental characterization of bodycentric passive RFID systems

2011

Recent progresses in the design of wearable RFID tag antennas stimulate the idea of passive bodycentric systems wherein the required power to drive the wearable tags is directly scavenged from the interrogation signal emitted by the reader unit. While active bodycentric links have been extensively investigated, the feasibility of passive systems is still questionable due to the poor sensitivity of the tags and to the modest read distances. This paper describes an articulated measurement campaign with textile wearable low-profile tags in the UHF RFID band. It is demonstrated that both on-body and off-body links are feasible with a power budget fully compliant with the available technology. T…

Cascaded PD-PI controller for active power frequency control of two-area multi-units power system

2016

In interconnected multi-area power system; the real power generation within each area has to be managed through active power frequency control considering scheduled power exchange. In this work, two different controllers, namely cascaded PD-PI and conventional PID controller are considered for analyzing the dynamic response of the two area interconnected power system. Area-1 consists of two reheat type thermal generating power plant units and area-2 comprises of two non-reheat type thermal power plant units. The controller gains of PD-PI and PID controllers are efficiently tuned by ‘Teaching Learning based Optimization Technique’. In area-1, 1% step load disturbance is applied for analyzing…
