Population structure and mitochondrial DNA gene flow in Old World populations of Drosophila subobscura

An extensive survey of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) restriction polymorphism in 156 isofemale lines from 29 different geographic populations of Drosophila subobscura distributed throughout the Old World was carried out. Ten restriction enzymes were used, five of which revealed restriction site polymorphism. Of the 31 restriction sites detected, 13 were found to be polymorphic. Comparisons with the mtDNA map of Drosophila yakuba indicate that the variable sites are mainly concentrated in protein genes, especially those corresponding to the NADH complex. Rapid acoustic boundary element method for solution of 3D problems using hierarchical adaptive cross approximation GMRES approach

This paper presents a new solver for 3D acoustic problems called RABEM (Rapid Acoustic Boundary Element Method). The Adaptive Cross Approximation and a Hierarchical GMRES solver are used to generate both the system matrix and the right hand side vector by saving storage requirement, and to solve the system solution. The potential and the particle velocity values at selected internal points are evaluated using again the Adaptive Cross Approximation (ACA). A GMRES without preconditioner and with a block diagonal preconditioner are developed and tested for low and high frequency problems. Improving High Frequency Transformers behavior for DC-DC Converter Used in Electric Vehicles

The paper presents a design procedure for high frequency transformer windings adopted in the DC-DC converter used in electric vehicles. The output of the design procedure is the integration of a 3D printed plastic case in the transformer windings, with the aim to maximize the output power. The proposal design procedure is entirely based on a finite element analysis approach and on a differential evolution algorithm used for the solution of the optimization problem.

Optimization of ZnO:Al/Ag/ZnO:Al structures for ultra-thin high-performance transparent conductive electrodes

Al-doped ZnO (AZO)/Ag/AZO multilayer coatings (50-70 nm thick) were grown at room temperature on glass substrates with different silver layer thickness, from 3 to 19 nm, by using radio frequency magnetron sputtering. Thermal stability of the compositional, optical and electrical properties of the AZO/Ag/AZO structures were investigated up to 400 °C and as a function of Ag film thickness. An AZO film as thin as 20 nm is an excellent barrier to Ag diffusion. A circularly polarized wideband high gain patch antenna for wireless power transfer

This article deals with a microstrip patch antenna working at 868 MHz, suitable for the radio frequency wireless power transfer and energy harvesting applications. The proposed monolithic antenna is compact, lightweight and it is printed on a thick substrate in order to maximize the total gain in the broadside direction. The antenna radiates at 868 MHz with a fractional impedance bandwidth of 5% and it shows a gain of 4.14 dB.

Calibrating a safety performance function (SPF) with many years of accident data creates a temporal correlation that traditional model calibration procedures cannot deal with. It is well known that generalized estimating equations (GEE) models are able to incorporate trends into accident data and thus overcome difficulties in accounting for correlation; the usual application of GEEs to safety analysis uses robust (or sandwich) estimates of regression coefficients under the independence hypothesis for the working correlation matrix. An S-band High-Gradient (HG) Radio Frequency (RF) laboratory is under construction and commissioning at IFIC. The purpose of the laboratory is to perform investigations of high-gradient phenomena and to develop normal-conducting RF technology, with special focus on RF systems for hadron-therapy. The layout of the facility is derived from the scheme of the Xbox-3 test facility at CERN [1] and uses medium peak-power (7.5 MW) and high repetition rate (400 Hz) klystrons, whose RF output is combined to drive two testing slots to the required power. Distribution of relaxation times in 0.5PMN-0.5PSN ceramics

Dielectric properties of chemically ordered and disordered 0.5PbMg1/3Nb2/3O3-0.5 PbSc1/2Nb1/2O3 (0.5PMN-0.5PSN) ceramics were investigated in frequency range from 20 Hz to 3 GHz by dielectric spectroscopy. The broad dielectric dispersion, similar to this typically obtained for relaxor ferroelectrics (RFE), was observed in both ceramics below 350 K. The frequency dependence of dielectric permittivity of these ceramics were analyzed in terms of the distribution of relaxation times and showed the splitting into two components at lower temperatures. Millimeter wave absorption by confined acoustic modes in CdSe/CdTe core-shell quantum dots

International audience; Taking advantage of the specific core-shell charge separation structure in the CdSe/CdTe core-shell Type-II quantum dots (QDs), we experimentally observed the resonant-enhanced dipolar interaction between millimeter-wave (MMW) photons and their corresponding (l = 1) confined acoustic phonons. With proper choice of size, the absorption band can be tuned to desired frequency of MMW imaging. Exploiting this characteristic absorption, in a fiber-scanned MMW imaging system, we demonstrated the feasibility of CdSe/CdTe QDs as the contrast agents of MMW imaging.
