Seismic response of braced frames with and without friction dampers

Abstract The dynamic response of friction damped bracing systems and ordinary cross-bracing systems inserted into surrounding frames without lateral stiffness is analysed in order to compare the typical behaviour of the two different bracing systems. The cyclic force-displacement relationship in the two cases is accurately modelled on the basis of experimental and related numerical models which are available in the literature, and the structural dimensionless parameters defining the shapes of the cycles are stressed. A Critical Analysis on the Friction Modeling in Orthogonal Cutting of Steel

Numerical simulation of cutting process is today moving towards two different directions. The former concerns the development of high performance codes able to approach the 3D phenomena, the latter is already focused on the study of some fundamental aspects whose full understanding may be strategic for the knowledge enhancing in this very complex field. In the paper this second way was pursued and a wide analysis on the numerical robustness of the 2D orthogonal cutting process is presented. In particular, the role played by the friction modeling is discussed taking into account a wide integrated numerical and experimental campaign.

The increasing development of smart materials, such as piezoelectric and shape memory alloys, has opened new opportunities for improving repair techniques. Particularly, active repairs, based on the converse piezoelectric effect, can increase the life of a structure by reducing the crack opening. Steel jacketing of reinforced concrete (RC) columns is a common retrofitting technique used to restore bearing and deformation capacity of buildings presenting structural deficiencies. An implant-supported overdenture design with a horizontal path of insertion

The rehabilitation of the atrophic maxilla by means of implant-supported prostheses cannot always be achieved with fixed prostheses because of anatomic, esthetic, or economic issues, so for some patients the treatment of choice is a removable prosthesis. This article analyzes a new design for implant-supported overdentures with horizontal or faciolingual insertion. Its retention system is based on frictional forces or stepped interlocking horizontal surfaces and is appropriate for patients with skeletal Class II or III relationships with severe maxillary atrophies. Friction Stir Welding Lap Joint Resistance Optimization Through Gradient Techniques

In recent years, scientific interest on friction stir welding (FSW) has grown more and more since such a joining technique allows one to weld lightweight alloys that are rather difficult to weld or even “unweldable” with the classic fusion welding operations. Furthermore, few industrial applications of the process are already known in different manufacturing fields. In this paper, the optimization problem of a FSW lap joint for automotive applications is investigated, taking into account process parameters such as the tool rotating speed and the tool feed rate; a numerical gradient technique is applied for the optimization procedure reducing the number of experimental tests to be developed.

Friction Stir Welding of AA6082-T6 T-joints: Process Engineering and Performance Measurement

In the paper the authors present the results of a wide range of experiments on T-parts. First, friction stir welding process engineering has been developed with the aim of determining the specific process parameters that make up the soundness of the obtained T-parts. Then the performance of the obtained T-joints has been compared with T-joints obtained by metal inert gas welding and extruded T-parts. The parts have been tested utilizing a customized bending test with the aim of highlighting their behaviour both in elastic and plastic fields.

Friction stir welding: a solid state joining process

A wide experimental investigation on the friction stir welding of AA6082-T6 sheets is presented. In particular the influence of some of the most relevant process parameters was taken into account, with the aim to maximize the joint strength; furthermore the joint fatigue behavior was considered too. An accurate analysis on the obtained parts was carried out, with particular attention to the material microstructure evolution. The obtained results permitted to develop a proper FSW process engineering.

For a lay-flat drip line with an inner nominal diameter dn = 16 mm, characterized by three different pipe wall thicknesses, WT, 6, 8 and 10 mil, the Authors of the original paper very accurately investigated the geometrical expansion of the cross-sectional diameter as a function of different pressure head values, ranging in between 0.84-17.55 m.
