Analysis of the heat-island effect of the city of Valencia, Spain, through air temperature transects and NOAA satellite data
1991
The aim of this paper is to analyze the heat-island effect of the city of Valencia, Spain, by means of the traditional technique (transects of the air temperature measured from a car) and by means of NOAA satellite thermal images. The analysis includes the nights of 27 and 28 February 1988, on which a light radiative frost occurred. Satellite images were corrected for the emissivity effect by defining an effective emissivity, which was obtained from the emissivity values of the asphalt, walls and roofs of the buildings, and from the proportion of these elements in each pixel. By comparing air temperature values with corrected NOAA data, we have observed that the value of the heat-island eff…

Abstract. During the winter of 2013 and 2014 measurements of cloud microphysical properties over a 5-week period at the high-alpine site Jungfraujoch, Switzerland, were carried out as part of the Cloud Aerosol Characterisation Experiments (CLACE) and the Ice Nucleation Process Investigation and Quantification project (INUPIAQ). Measurements of aerosol properties at a second, lower site, Schilthorn, Switzerland, were used as input for a primary ice nucleation scheme to predict ice nuclei concentrations at Jungfraujoch. Frequent, rapid transitions in the ice and liquid properties of the clouds at Jungfraujoch were identified that led to large fluctuations in ice mass fractions over temporal s…

Abstract. Low planetary wave activity led to a stable vortex with exceptionally cold temperatures in the 2015–2016 Arctic winter. Extended areas with temperatures below the ice frost point temperature Tice persisted over weeks in the Arctic stratosphere as derived from the 36-year temperature climatology of the ERA-Interim reanalysis data set of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). These extreme conditions promoted the formation of widespread polar stratospheric ice clouds (ice PSCs). The space-borne Cloud-Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP) instrument on board the CALIPSO (Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observation) satellit…
Coarse-grained cryogenic aragonite as end-member of mineral formation in dolomite caves
2018
Abstract Cryogenic carbonate particles (single crystals and aggregates) have recently been recognized as important witnesses of permafrost dynamics, as they can be used to estimate the thickness and timing of development of permafrost. In this study, the petrography and geochemistry of coarse-grained cryogenic aragonite (CGCAr) identified in Zoolithen Cave in NE Bavaria, Germany, are described in detail for the first time. We provide a sequence of carbonate precipitation during freezing, where CGCAr mark the final crystallization phase in freezing water on ice. Our results support the notion that host rock composition, solution chemistry, and cave ventilation play an important role for arag…
A new Diplura species from Georgia caves, Plusiocampa (Plusiocampa) imereti (Diplura, Campodeidae), with morphological and molecular data
2021
A new dipluran species, Plusiocampa (Plusiocampa) imereti Sendra & Barjadze sp. nov., from the deep zone in three caves in the Imereti region, Georgia, is described. This new troglobitic Plusiocampa is an addition to four others known Diplura from around the Black Sea region, two Dydimocampa and two Plusiocampa s. str. The present study also provides the first CO1 sequences for the Plusiocampinae taxa and the first molecular data for cave-dwelling Plusiocampa species. Although bootstrap values were low, the maximum-likelihood phylogenetic tree grouped Plusiocampa (P.) imereti Sendra & Barjadze sp. nov. with two Plusiocampa s. str. species from Eastern Europe. Morphologically, P. (P.…
Quantificação das estruturas de fluxo sin-magmáticas do Plutão de Vila Pouca de Aguiar: uma ferramenta para a quantificação estrutural e da qualidade…
2014
Mineral distribution pattern of Variscan post-tectonic granites from Vila Pouca de Aguiar Pluton (NE Portugal) were analyzed with methods partially based on fractal geometry and, with respect to rock inhomogeneity and anisotropy. The result of the analysis provides information about magmatic flux and mineral equilibrium processes in a crystallizing magma chamber. In addition, the used methods may also provide important information for the ornamental rock industry, because they allow fast and automatic evaluation of economic rock parameters.
Large stocks of peatland carbon and nitrogen are vulnerable to permafrost thaw
2020
Significance Over many millennia, northern peatlands have accumulated large amounts of carbon and nitrogen, thus cooling the global climate. Over shorter timescales, peatland disturbances can trigger losses of peat and release of greenhouses gases. Despite their importance to the global climate, peatlands remain poorly mapped, and the vulnerability of permafrost peatlands to warming is uncertain. This study compiles over 7,000 field observations to present a data-driven map of northern peatlands and their carbon and nitrogen stocks. We use these maps to model the impact of permafrost thaw on peatlands and find that warming will likely shift the greenhouse gas balance of northern peatlands. …
Investigation of the Cooling of Hot Walls by Liquid Water Sprays
1999
An experimental study was conducted for the heat transfer from hot walls to liquid water sprays. Four full cone, swirl spray nozzles were used at different upstream pressures, giving mass fluxes impinging on the wall, G, from 8 to 80 kg m(-2) s(-1), mean droplet velocities, U, from 13 to 28 m s(-1) and mean droplet diameters, D, from 0.4 to 2.2 mm. A target consisting of two slabs of beryllium-copper alloy, each 4 x 5 cm in size and 1.1 mm thick, was electrically heated to about 300 degrees C and then rapidly and symmetrically cooled by water sprays issuing from two identical nozzles. The midplane temperature was measured by a fast response, thin-foil thermocouple and the experimental data …
Äärellisten Borel-mittojen Fourier-muunnoksista euklidisissa avaruuksissa
2016
Ongelmaa tarkastellaa…
