Relation of fruit color, elongation, hardness, and volume to the infestation of olive cultivars by the olive fruit fly, Bactrocera oleae

The susceptibility of olive cultivars to the olive fruit fly, Bactrocera oleae (Rossi) (Diptera: Tephritidae), has seldom been studied. This article examines factors associated with olive fruit fly infestation of 16 commonly planted Sicilian olive cultivars. Total infestation data were simultaneously correlated with categorical and quantitative factors using ordinal logistic regression. When all factors were included in the analysis, year, sampling date, cultivar, and fruit color were highly significant, but the quantitative factors fruit volume, fruit elongation, and fruit hardness were not. We used a non-intrusive method (13CO2 feeding) and a manipulative approach to see whether fruiting shoots in peach trees are autonomous or may import carbon from neighboring shoots under forced conditions, and whether the degree of autonomy is influenced by the source-sink relationship on the shoot. Location and characterization of the stem-calyx area on oranges by computer vision

Three image analysis methods were studied and evaluated to solve the problem of removing long stems attached to mechanically harvested oranges: colour segmentation based on linear discriminant analysis, contour curvature analysis, and a thinning process which involves iterating until the stem becomes a skeleton. These techniques are able to determine the presence or absence of a stem with certainty, to locate the stems from random views with more than 90% accuracy and from profile images with an accuracy ranging from 92.4% to 100% depending on the method used. Growth stage and conditions affect sorbitol:sucrose ratio in peach source and sink organs

Along with sucrose, sorbitol represents the major photosynthetic product and the main form of translocated carbon in peach. In leaves, the ability to synthesize and accumulate sorbitol and sucrose increases with leaf age or distance from the apex until full maturity. Also, in the internodes of a growing shoot sorbitol:sucrose ratio (SOR:SUC) increases with distance from the apex. In mature leaves, SOR:SUC increases in response to fruit sink removal and water deficit, due mainly to sorbitol rather than sucrose accumulation. Fast determination of prominent carotenoids in tomato fruits by CEC using methacrylate ester-based monolithic columns.

In this study, the major carotenoids (beta-carotene and lycopene) present in tomato fruits were analyzed by CEC with a methacrylate ester-based monolithic column. The effects of the porogenic solvent ratio, and the hydrophobicity of bulk monomer employed were examined on carotenoids separations. A fast separation of these analytes was achieved in less than 5.0 min in a mobile phase containing 35% THF, 30% ACN, 30% methanol, and 5% of a 5 mM Tris aqueous buffer, pH 8, with lauryl methacrylate-based monoliths. Xyloglucan-derived oligosaccharides induce ethylene synthesis in persimmon (Diospyros kaki L.) fruit

In this work the effect of injection of xyloglucan-derived oligosaccharides (XGOs) into whole persimmon (Diospyros kaki L.) fruits on ethylene biosynthesis was investigated. Fruits collected during different ripening stages produced low levels of ethylene without a climacteric-like peak. Pretreatment of these fruits with 10 cm 3 C 2 H4 m -3 for 8 h stimulated little or no endogenous ethylene production. Grapevine fruit set: Physiology of the abscission zone

Effects of ethylene and of 'anti-ethylene' compounds on the floral pedicel abscission zone in grapevines were analysed via a laboratory model consisting of isolated flowers held in Petri dishes. Our model permitted precise determination of abscission and enabled us to test a range of physiologically-active compounds including ethylene precursors, and antagonists of ethylene action. For example, a precursor of ethylene, 1-aminocyclopropane-l-carboxylic acid, had the same effect as ethylene in promoting abscission. A method using HPLC analysis has been used to compare the level of resveratrol and its derivatives, piceid, pterostilbene and epsilon-viniferin, in grapevine berries of three Vitis vinifera varieties. The concentration of these compounds has been evaluated in healthy and Botrytis cinerea infected grape clusters, both in natural vineyard conditions and in response to UV elicitation.

Contact probe voltammetry for in situ monitoring of the reactivity of phenolic tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) compounds with ROS

The application of an in situ electrochemical contact probe methodology for monitoring reactivity of antioxidant polyphenolic compounds in tomato fruits is described. Upon electrochemical generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), characteristic voltammetric responses were recorded for compounds resulting from the reaction of such species with tomato compounds. This suggests that new electrochemically oxidizable compounds are generated from the oxidation of highly reactive polyphenolic compounds with ROS. Therefore, an evaluation of the antioxidant capacity of such species could be made from voltammetric data for different tomato varieties.
