Heterocyclic aromatic amines (HAAs) can be formed during the cooking of meat and fish at elevated temperatures and are associated with an increased risk for cancer. On the other hand, epidemiological findings suggest that foods rich in fruits and vegetables can protect against cancer. Iron Bioavailability in Fortified Fruit Beverages Using Ferritin Synthesis by Caco-2 Cells

The bioavailability of iron from fortified fruit beverages was estimated by an in vitro system including enzymatic digestion, iron uptake by Caco-2 cells, and ferritin formation determined via an enzyme immunoassay (ELISA). Thus, the aim of the present study was to assess iron bioavailability as influenced by the presence of known dietary promoter and inhibitory factors in fortified fruit beverages containing iron and/or zinc and/or skimmed milk. Absence of the endo-beta-1,4-glucanases Cel1 and Cel2 reduces susceptibility to Botrytis cinerea in tomato.

Cel1 and Cel2 are members of the tomato (Solanum lycopersicum Mill) endo-beta-1,4-glucanase (EGase) family that may play a role in fruit ripening and organ abscission. This work demonstrates that Cel1 protein is present in other vegetative tissues and accumulates during leaf development. We recently reported the downregulation of both the Cel1 mRNA and protein upon fungal infection, suggesting the involvement of EGases in plant-pathogen interactions. Effect of cytochrome P450 inhibitors (diethyl dithiocarbamate, ketoconazole and grapefruit juice) on the pharmacokinetics of all-trans-retinoic acid.

Diethyl dithiocarbamate (DEDTC) has been reported to be a more powerful inhibitor of all-trans-retinoic acid (ATRA) in vitro metabolism than the well-established cytochrome P450 (CYP) inhibitor ketoconazole (KC). In recent years grapefruit juice (GJ) has been shown to be able to increase the oral bioavailability of several drugs by inhibiting intestinal CYP. This study investigated the in vivo effect of these CYP inhibitors on the pharmacokinetics of ATRA. Eight-year-old olive trees of ‘Nocellara del Belice’ grown in central Sicily were treated with five different types/combinations of organic and mineral foliar fertilizers.
