Risk based Fatigue Inspection Planning – State of the Art

2013

AbstractThe present paper presents the methodology and the practical calculations for risk based inspection planning of fatigue cracks in welded offshore steel structures. Due to the uncertainty in the variables involved in the problem the planning has to be carried out by stochastic modeling and risk based assessments. Scatter in potential crack growth has to be analyzed by applied probabilistic facture mechanics and the uncertainty in the performance of the actual inspection technique has to be determined. With given risk acceptance criteria the practical outcome of the analyses is recommended inspection techniques and associated planned inspection time intervals. The classical theory is …

Risk-benefit in food safety and nutrition - outcome of the 2019 Parma Summer School

2021

Risk-benefit assessment is the comparison of the risk of a situation to its related benefits, i.e. a comparison of scenarios estimating the overall health impact. The risk–benefit analysis paradigm mirrors the classical risk analysis one: risk–benefit assessment goes hand-in-hand with risk–benefit management and risk–benefit communication. The various health effects associated with food consumption, together with the increasing demand for advice on healthy and safe diets, have led to the development of different research disciplines in food safety and nutrition. In this sense, there is a clear need for a holistic approach, including and comparing all of the relevant health risks and benefit…

Household water source and the risk of childhood brain tumours: results of the SEARCH International Brain Tumor Study.

2004

Background The period in utero is a time of increased vulnerability. Offspring of pregnant women exposed to carcinogenic substances in drinking water may be more likely to develop cancer. We examined whether household water source and the presence of nitrates or nitrites in residential water were associated with increased risks of childhood brain tumours (CBT). Methods We used data from a multicentre, case-control study with maternal information on residential water source, and nitrate/nitrite levels of tap water measured by dipstick. Subjects included 836 CBT cases and 1485 controls from five countries. Results The risks of CBT associated with reliance on well water (versus public water) d…

Non-response bias as a likely cause of the association between young maternal age at the time of delivery and the risk of cancer in the offspring.

2003

Some epidemiological studies have shown an association between young maternal age at the time of delivery and risk of cancer in the offspring. In a recent German case-control study, there was a twofold increase in the leukaemia risk for children whose mothers were aged < 20 years at the time of delivery. As the prevalence of younger mothers among control families was particularly low, data on maternal age distributions for the general population of Germany were obtained in order to examine the representativeness of the control sample. Despite the excellent sampling frame based on data from complete and up-to-date population registries and a satisfactory response rate among controls ( approx…

Synthesis, Structural characterization and Exafs investigations of new ruthenium(III) complexes.

2008

Two new complexs of Ru(III) with glucosaminic acid and 1-Methyluracil, [RuCl2(Glun-N,O)2]H (I), (Glun-= glucosaminate); [RuCl4(1-MeU-N3)(DMSO)]H2.H2O (II), (1-MeU-= 1-Methyluracilate) were prepared from the same Ru(III) precursors, RuCl3•3H2O and [(DMSO)2H][trans-RuCl4(DMSO)2]. The characterization of the complexes have been carried out by elemental analysis, FT-IR, ES-MS, NMR and EXAFS.

Maternal effects in vulnerability to eye-parasites and correlations between behavior and parasitism in juvenile Arctic charr

2017

Hatchery-reared fish show high mortalities after release to the wild environment. Explanations for this include potentially predetermined genetics, behavioral, and physiological acclimation to fish farm environments, and increased vulnerability to predation and parasitism in the wild. We studied vulnerability to Diplostomum spp. parasites (load of eye flukes in the lenses), immune defense (relative spleen size) and antipredator behaviors (approaches toward predator odor, freezing, and swimming activity) in hatchery-reared juvenile Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) using a nested mating design. Fish were exposed to eye-fluke larvae via the incoming water at the hatchery. Fish size was positi…

SAP FSM integrācija ar SAP ECC

2022

Taking Stock and Re-Examining the Role of Science Communication

2021

Eight science communication research projects have been funded by the European Commission since 2018. These projects are a response to one of the European Commission's 'Science with and for Society' (SwafS) funding calls ¿ 'SwafS-19: Taking stock and re-examining the role of science communication.' Together these projects have received almost ¿10 million in research funding, and each has been affected to some extent by the COVID-19 global pandemic. This paper provides an overview of the eight projects, how they adapted to the challenges caused by the pandemic, and the subsequent implications for science communication policy and research funding.

PETROLOGICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL CONSTRAINTS OF THE PRE-ERUPTIVE CONDITIONS OF LA SOMMATA BASALT AND BROWN TUFFS TEPHRA (AEOLIAN ISLANDS)

2011

The principal focus of this thesis was the reconstruction of pre-eruptive conditions of two key eruptions at Vulcano island, the Brown Tuffs and the La Sommata, by combining the melt inclusion approach with phase equilibria derived by crystallization experiments. Brown Tuffs (the most energetic and widely distributed eruption of the Archipelago) were produced by several eruptions that occurred in a large age interval, 78-7.7 ka B.P. At Vulcano BT deposits crop out as proximal facies. La Sommata centre (age ca. 50 ka B.P.), is instead a basaltic scoria cone fed by one of the most primitive magmas of Aeolian Arc with ankaramitic affinity. Pyroxene-hosted melt inclusions on Lower and Intermedi…
