Lévy processes in bounded domains: path-wise reflection scenarios and signatures of confinement
2022
We discuss an impact of various (path-wise) reflection-from-the barrier scenarios upon confining properties of a paradigmatic family of symmetric $\alpha $-stable L\'{e}vy processes, whose permanent residence in a finite interval on a line is secured by a two-sided reflection. Depending on the specific reflection "mechanism", the inferred jump-type processes differ in their spectral and statistical characteristics, like e.g. relaxation properties, and functional shapes of invariant (equilibrium, or asymptotic near-equilibrium) probability density functions in the interval. The analysis is carried out in conjunction with attempts to give meaning to the notion of a reflecting L\'{e}vy process…
Putative identification of an amphipathic alpha-helical sequence in hemolysin of Escherichia coli (HlyA) involved in transmembrane pore formation.
2008
Abstract Escherichia coli hemolysin is a pore-forming protein belonging to the RTX toxin family. Cysteine scanning mutagenesis was performed to characterize the putative pore-forming domain of the molecule. A single cysteine residue was introduced at 48 positions within the sequence spanning residues 170–400 and labeled with the polarity-sensitive dye badan. Spectrofluorimetric analyses indicated that several amino acids in this domain are inserted into the lipid bilayer during pore formation. An amphipathic α-helix spanning residues 272–298 was identified that may line the aqueous pore. The importance of this sequence was highlighted by the introduction of two prolines at positions 284 and…
Stochastic algorithms for robust statistics in high dimension
2016
This thesis focus on stochastic algorithms in high dimension as well as their application in robust statistics. In what follows, the expression high dimension may be used when the the size of the studied sample is large or when the variables we consider take values in high dimensional spaces (not necessarily finite). In order to analyze these kind of data, it can be interesting to consider algorithms which are fast, which do not need to store all the data, and which allow to update easily the estimates. In large sample of high dimensional data, outliers detection is often complicated. Nevertheless, these outliers, even if they are not many, can strongly disturb simple indicators like the me…
Effect of Wind Turbulence on Extreme Load Analysis of an Offshore Wind Turbine
2019
Abstract Evaluation of dynamic responses under extreme environmental conditions is important for the structural design of offshore wind turbines. Previously, a modified environmental contour method has been proposed to estimate extreme responses. In the method, the joint distribution of environmental variables near the cut-out wind speed is used to derive the critical environmental conditions for a specified return period, and the turbulence intensity (TI) of wind is assumed to be a deterministic value. To address more realistic wind conditions, this paper considers the turbulence intensity as a stochastic variable and investigates the impact on the modified environmental contour. Aerodynam…
The Education Production Function reviewed in the framework of Education For All in Sub-Saharan Africa: from theoretical and methodological bounds to…
2007
The Coleman report (1966) was the first of numerous researches exploring quality of learning determinants analysis. With the Education Production Function (EPF), economists have greatly contributed to the extension of this research domain. Actually, empirical works are leading the field with important methodological debates which have fuelled controversies (Hanushek, 2003; Krueger, 2003). Thus, methodological issues have particularly rallied researchers' interests on empirical estimations, while academic researches on the renewal of the theoretical framework have remained scarce despite obvious bounds. Without contesting the validity of miscellaneous estimation problems and the necessity of…
Crystal structures of three ortho-substituted N-acylhydrazone derivatives
2017
To explore the effect of the nature of substitutions on the structural parameters and hydrogen-bond interactions inN-acylhydrazone derivatives, the crystal structures of threeortho-substitutedN-acylhydrazone derivatives, namely (E)-N-{2-[2-(2-chlorobenzylidene)hydrazinyl]-2-oxoethyl}-4-methylbenzenesulfonamide, C16H16ClN3O3S (I), (E)-N-{2-[2-(2-methylbenzylidene)hydrazinyl]-2-oxoethyl}-4-methylbenzenesulfonamide, C17H19N3O3S (II), and (E)-N-{2-[2-(2-nitrobenzylidene)hydrazinyl]-2-oxoethyl}-4-methylbenzenesulfonamide, C16H16N4O5S (III), have been determined. The structures of the three compounds display similar molecular conformations and hydrogen-bond patterns. The hydrazone part of the mol…

Product Recalls and Supply Chain Responsiveness
2015
The increase in product recalls which occurred in recent years is mainly due to the globalization of the supply chains, in particular the outsourcing and offshoring of manufacturing and distribution. Besides being the main cause of recall, in this paper we argue that outsourcing (domestic and international) and offshoring may also affect the supply chain responsiveness in managing the recall itself. We test a number of hypotheses on this theme empirically on the pharmaceutical sector by using data collected from the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Retrieval of oceanic chlorophyll concentration with relevance vector machines
2006
Abstract In this communication, we evaluate the performance of the relevance vector machine (RVM) for the estimation of biophysical parameters from remote sensing data. For illustration purposes, we focus on the estimation of chlorophyll-a concentrations from remote sensing reflectance just above the ocean surface. A variety of bio-optical algorithms have been developed to relate measurements of ocean radiance to in situ concentrations of phytoplankton pigments, and ultimately most of these algorithms demonstrate the potential of quantifying chlorophyll-a concentrations accurately from multispectral satellite ocean color data. Both satellite-derived data and in situ measurements are subject…
Photocontrolled On-Surface Pseudorotaxane Formation with Well-Ordered Macrocycle Multilayers.
2016
The photoinduced pseudorotaxane formation between a photoresponsive axle and a tetralactam macrocycle was investigated in solution and on glass surfaces with immobilized multilayers of macrocycles. In the course of this reaction, a novel photoswitchable binding station with azobenzene as the photoswitchable unit and diketopiperazine as the binding station was synthesized and studied by NMR and UV/Vis spectroscopy. Glass surfaces have been functionalized with pyridine-terminated SAMs and subsequently with multilayers of macrocycles through layer-by-layer self assembly. A preferred orientation of the macrocycles could be confirmed by NEXAFS spectroscopy. The photocontrolled deposition of the …
