The role of mothers' beliefs in students' self-concept of ability development

The aim of this study was to investigate whether the child-related competence beliefs of mothers are associated with the development of Finnish adolescents' self-concept of mathematics and literacy ability during their transition from primary to lower secondary school and whether these associations depend on adolescents' level of performance. The results showed that, first, adolescents' self-concept of mathematics and literacy ability decreased over time. The impact of maternal beliefs on the linear trend of the self-concept of mathematics and literacy ability was dependent on the level of students' performance. The aims of this research were to examine the role of parents’ and teachers’ beliefs about children’s abilities in students’ self-concept of ability in the domains of literacy and mathematics, and whether the role of parents and teachers is different among boys and girls, and among low- and high-performing students. Students' Positive Expectations and Concerns Prior to the School Transition to Lower Secondary School

This mixed-method study examines students' expectations and concerns before transitioning from primary to lower secondary school and the role of students' school-related wellbeing and self-esteem in their concerns. Students reported their beliefs about the forthcoming school transition and filled in a questionnaire assessing school burnout and self-esteem. The results showed that the students had positive expectations comprising comfort, friendships, learning, school environment, increased freedom and teacher -student relations. This study investigated Finnish pupils’ beliefs about English oral proficiency, its learning and assessment in order to give voice to the pupils themselves as well as to better understand their views on English oral proficiency. The data consisted of nine semistructured interviews and self-evaluations and peer evaluations of nine 9th graders from three Finnish basic education schools. The study was qualitative in its nature, and the data were mainly analysed using content analysis. Abstract English lessons have been compulsory in French medical schools since the 18th March 1992 bill. Objectives: The aim of this work is to describe the characteristics of this teaching programme as it exists in 2005.
