Conservation resource allocation involves a complex set of considerations including species, habitats, connectivity, local to global biodiversity objectives, alternative protection and restoration actions, while requiring cost-efficiency and effective implementation. We present a national scale spatial conservation prioritization analysis for complementing the network of protected mires in Finland. We show how spatial prioritization coupled with regional targets and expert knowledge can facilitate structured decision-making. Spectroscopic characterization of alkaline earth uranyl carbonates

A series of alkaline uranyl carbonates, M[UO{sub 2}(CO{sub 3}){sub 3}].nH{sub 2}O (M=Mg{sub 2}, Ca{sub 2}, Sr{sub 2}, Ba{sub 2}, Na{sub 2}Ca, and CaMg) was synthesized and characterized by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) after nitric acid digestion, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), and thermal analysis (TGA/DTA). The molecular structure of these compounds was characterized by extended X-ray absorption fine-structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Crystalline Ba{sub 2}[UO{sub 2}(CO{sub 3}){sub 3}].6H{sub 2}O was obtained for the first time. The EXAFS analysis showed that this compound consists of …

Tutkielman tarkoituksena oli selvittää mitä oppimateriaaleja ruotsinopettajat käyttävät suomenkielisissä steinerkouluissa ala- ja yläkoulussa ja kuinka steinerpedagogiikka vaikuttaa oppimateriaalien valintaan. Tutkimuksella pyrittiin selvittämään myös miten steinerkouluissa käytössä oleva vihkotyöskentely tapahtuu ja millaisia ajatuksia opettajilla on siitä. Tutkimukseen osallistui 10 steinerkoulun ruotsinopettajaa, jotka vastasivat kyselyyn nettilomakkeella. Kysely alkoi neljällä taustatietoja kartoittavalla kysymyksellä, joita seurasi viisi opettajien käyttämien materiaaleihin liittyvää kysymystä. Kysymykset 7-9 koskivat vihkotyöskentelyä. Muotoilun arvoa on mitattu yleensä lopputulosta ja ulkoisia hyötyjä arvioiden. Se, miten muotoilija itse määrittelee työnsä tavoitteet, on jäänyt vähäisemmälle huomiolle. Tässä tutkielmassa esitetään mittauskehikko muotoilijoiden omalle työlleen asettamien tavoitteiden mittaamista, kuvailua, vertailua ja toimialan kehityksen seurantaa varten. Mitattavan ilmiön hypoteesi käsittää seitsemän ulottuvuutta: kolme ekologisen kestävyyden periaatetta ja yhden sosiaalisen kestävyyden periaatteen sekä loppukäyttäjän tarpeet, muotoilijan omat tarpeet ja ulkoiset vaatimukset. Equal access to the top? Measuring selection into finnish academia

In this article, we draw a parallel between equality of opportunity in educational transitions and equality of opportunity in academic careers. In both cases, many methodological problems can be ameliorated by the use of longitudinal rather than cross-sectional data. We illustrate this point by using Finnish full-population register data to follow the educational and academic careers of the 1964–1966 birth cohorts from birth to the present day. We show how the Finnish professoriate is highly selected both in terms of parental background and in terms of gender.
