The water association band as a marker of hydrogen bonds in trehalose amorphous matrices

The relevant role played by residual water in modulating the dynamics and structure of a protein, a matrix and their coupling has been thoroughly studied in bioprotective amorphous saccharide matrices via experiments and simulations. In order to better characterize this residual water and the hydrogen bond structures in which it is involved, in this work infrared spectroscopy experiments are conducted on trehalose-water systems. Evaluation of mucoadhesive properties of α,β-poly(N-hydroxyethyl)-dl-aspartamide and α,β-poly(aspartylhydrazide) using ATR–FTIR spectroscopy

Abstract The mucoadhesive properties of α,β poly( N -hydroxyethyl)- dl -aspartamide (PHEA) and α,β-polyaspartylhydrazide (PAHy) have been investigated using attenuated total reflection infrared (ATR–FTIR) spectroscopy. In particular, films based on these polymers have been contacted with a mucin solution at pH 7 and, the interfacial interaction and interpenetration between the glycoprotein and PHEA or PAHy have been studied by analysing the ATR–FTIR spectra. A diffusion model using a solution of Ficks' second law has been employed to determine the diffusion coefficient of water into polymeric films as a consequence of interdiffusion which occurs at the polymer film/mucin solution interface.

O-Alkylation of a lignite humic acid by phase-transfer catalysis

A mild phase-transfer catalytic reaction has been conducted to O-alkylate the acidic functions of a lignite humic acid (HA), using tetrabutylammonium hydroxide as the phase-transfer catalyst. The HA acidic functional groups were made to react, in tetrahydrofuran, by nucleophilic substitution with several alkyl halides-methyl iodide, and ethyl, propyl, and butyl, and benzyl bromide. The occurrence of the O-alkylation reaction was assessed by elemental analysis and 1H NMR, CPMAS 13C NMR, and FTIR spectroscopy. The FTIR spectra were analysed in the region of the nu(s)(N-H), AI(C=O) and nu(s)(Calpha=Cbeta) bands for a series of Ac-DeltaXaa-NMe2, where DeltaXaa = DeltaAla, (Z)-DeltaAbu, (Z)-DeltaLeu, (Z)-DeltaPhe and DeltaVal, to determine a predominant solution conformation of these alpha,beta-dehydropeptide-related molecules. Measurements were taken in CCl4, DCM and MeCN solutions. In the same way, spectra of saturated analogues Ac-Xaa-NMe2, where Xaa = Ala, Abu, Leu, Phe and Val, were investigated. Structure−Dynamics Coupling between Protein and External Matrix in Sucrose-Coated and in Trehalose-Coated MbCO:  An FTIR Study

We performed FTIR measurements on carboxy-myoglobin (MbCO) embedded in a sucrose−water matrix to study the degrees of freedom coupling between protein and external matrix in such a system. The work was undertaken on the light of recent results by Giuffrida et al. (J. Phys. Chem. B 2003, 107, 13211−13217), who evidenced, in trehalose-coated MbCO, a structured water−sugar environment of the protein, tightly coupled to the heme pocket structure. Such information was obtained through a suitable analysis of the temperature dependence of the CO stretching and of the water association bands in samples of different content of residual water. International audience; The objective of this work was to better display the effect of electron beam accelerator doses (0, 20, 40 and 60 kGy) on structural, mechanical and barrier properties of edible lightly plasticized chitosan-fish gelatin blend film. From Electron Spin Resonance (ESR), signal at 3500 G for blend film was identified as free radical formation during irradiation, which might introduce intermolecular cross-linking into the polymer matrix, thus affecting structural properties. Structure of calcium and zinc pectinate films investigated by FTIR spectroscopy

International audience; Calcium and zinc pectinate gels were prepared using a method which allowed calcium or zinc to diffuse from the cross-linking solution through a dialysis membrane to form a gel with amidated low-methoxyl pectin. The gel thus obtained was then dried, and the film structure was studied using FTIR spectroscopy as a function of the cation content (0%, 5%, 10%, and 15% w/v).
