Geometry and analysis of Dirichlet forms (II)

Abstract Given a regular, strongly local Dirichlet form E , under assumption that the lower bound of the Ricci curvature of Bakry–Emery, the local doubling and local Poincare inequalities are satisfied, we obtain that: (i) the intrinsic differential and distance structures of E coincide; (ii) the Cheeger energy functional Ch d E is a quadratic norm. This shows that (ii) is necessary for the Riemannian Ricci curvature defined by Ambrosio–Gigli–Savare to be bounded from below. This together with some recent results of Ambrosio–Gigli–Savare yields that the heat flow gives a gradient flow of Boltzman–Shannon entropy under the above assumptions. Existence and uniqueness of a solution for a parabolic quasilinear problem for linear growth functionals with $L^1$ data

We introduce a new concept of solution for the Dirichlet problem for quasilinear parabolic equations in divergent form for which the energy functional has linear growth. Using Kruzhkov's method of doubling variables both in space and time we prove uniqueness and a comparison principle in $L^1$ for these solutions. To prove the existence we use the nonlinear semigroup theory.

Using discourse segmentation to account for the polyfunctionality of discourse markers:The case of well

Abstract A large number of studies describe the many different functions of polyfunctional discourse markers like well in different contexts and from different theoretical perspectives. In the current paper, we propose to systematize the many different uses identified based on their position with respect to the discourse units they are associated with. Not only can previous findings on well be integrated into a single coherent representation of its uses and functions, but the positions with respect to the discourse units can also be associated with specific functions, thus shedding light on how the polyfunctionality of well is brought about.

Location theories and business location decision: A micro-spatial investigation of a nonmetropolitan area in Canada

This paper draws on location theories to statistically identify the relationship between the location of individual business establishments and the characterization of their local economic environment. Taking a micro-spatial perspective, the paper develops indicators from distance-based measures (DBM) to serve as independent variables in a discrete choice model (DCM). On ergodic operator means in Banach spaces

We consider a large class of operator means and prove that a number of ergodic theorems, as well as growth estimates known for particular cases, continue to hold in the general context under fairly mild regularity conditions. The methods developed in the paper not only yield a new approach based on a general point of view, but also lead to results that are new, even in the context of the classical Cesaro means.

New spaces of matrices with operator entries

In this paper, we will consider matrices with entries in the space of operators $\mathcal{B}(H)$, where $H$ is a separable Hilbert space and consider the class of matrices that can be approached in the operator norm by matrices with a finite number of diagonals. We will use the Schur product with Toeplitz matrices generated by summability kernels to describe such a class and show that in the case of Toeplitz matrices it can be identified with the space of continuous functions with values in $\mathcal B(H)$. A Unifying Approach to Weyl Type Theorems for Banach Space Operators

Weyl type theorems have been proved for a considerably large number of classes of operators. In this paper, by introducing the class of quasi totally hereditarily normaloid operators, we obtain a theoretical and general framework from which Weyl type theorems may be promptly established for many of these classes of operators. This framework also entails Weyl type theorems for perturbations f(T + K), where K is algebraic and commutes with T, and f is an analytic function, defined on an open neighborhood of the spectrum of T + K, such that f is non constant on each of the components of its domain.
