Knowledge Representation in Travelling Texts:from Mirroring to Missing the Point
2014

Today, information travels fast. Texts travel, too. In a corporate context, the question is how to manage which knowledge elements should travel to a new language area or market and in which form? The decision to let knowledge elements travel or not travel highly depends on the limitation and the purpose of the text in a new context as well as on predefined parameters for text travel. For texts used in marketing and in technology, the question is whether culture-bound knowledge elements should be domesticated or kept as foreign elements, or should be mirrored or moulded—or should not travel at all! When should semantic and pragmatic elements in a text be replaced and by w…
Predicting the structure and vibrational frequencies of ethylene using harmonic and anharmonic approaches at the Kohn–Sham complete basis set limit
2016
In this work, regular convergence patterns of the structural, harmonic, and VPT2-calculated anharmonic vibrational parameters of ethylene towards the Kohn–Sham complete basis set (KS CBS) limit are demonstrated for the first time. The performance of the VPT2 scheme implemented using density functional theory (DFT-BLYP and DFT-B3LYP) in combination with two Pople basis sets (6-311++G** and 6-311++G(3df,2pd)), the polarization-consistent basis sets pc-n, aug-pc-n, and pcseg-n (n = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4), and the correlation-consistent basis sets cc-pVXZ and aug-cc-pVXZ (X = D, T, Q, 5, 6) was tested. The BLYP-calculated harmonic frequencies were found to be markedly closer than the B3LYP-calculated h…
Comparison of genomic sequences clustering using Normalized Compression Distance and Evolutionary Distance
2008
Genomic sequences are usually compared using evolutionary distance, a procedure that implies the alignment of the sequences. Alignment of long sequences is a long procedure and the obtained dissimilarity results is not a metric. Recently the normalized compression distance was introduced as a method to calculate the distance between two generic digital objects, and it seems a suitable way to compare genomic strings. In this paper the clustering and the mapping, obtained using a SOM, with the traditional evolutionary distance and the compression distance are compared in order to understand if the two distances sets are similar. The first results indicate that the two distances catch differen…
Teaching Inorganic Photophysics and Photochemistry with Three Ruthenium(II) Polypyridyl Complexes: A Computer-Based Exercise
2015
Among computational methods, DFT (density functional theory) and TD-DFT (time-dependent DFT) are widely used in research to describe, inter alia, the optical properties of transition metal complexes. Inorganic/physical chemistry courses for undergraduate students treat such methods, but quite often only from the theoretical point of view. In the calculation exercise herein described, students are guided step by step through the computational study of the photophysics and photochemistry of polypyridyl Ru(II) d6-metal complexes. In particular, by means of DFT and TD-DFT calculations, they are asked to examine and interpret a set of experimental data describing the absorption, emission, and ph…
Trade Liberalization, Female Labor Force Participation and Economic Growth
2008
This research argues that the interaction between international trade and female labor force participation has played a significant role in the process of development. The main concern of our study is to show how differences in per household capital stocks, via international specialization, affect household choice of female labor force participation and fertility, and how these decisions, in turn, feed back and affect the accumulation of capital. Interestingly, and in contrast to conventional wisdom, our theory suggests that specialization in female's comparative advantage sectors expands these sectors but hinders female labor force participation, while specialization in male's comparative …
Efficiency and productive specialization: an application to Spanish regions
2000
MAUDOS J., PASTOR J. M. and SERRANO L. (2000) Efficiency and productive specialization: an application to the Spanish regions, Reg. Studies 34, 829-842. This paper shows the importance of the composition of production (productive specialization) and sector inefficiencies when evaluating efficiency in aggregate production. For this purpose, a new approach is proposed for obtaining efficiency scores which enables two components to be differentiated: one associated with the degree of efficiency within each sector (intra-sector efficiency); and another associated with the composition of production (composition efficiency). The application of this approach and its breakdown for the Spanish regio…
Biodiversity and dairy traits of indigenous milk lactic acid bacteria grown in presence of the main grape polyphenols
2020
ABSTRACT The present work was developed to select lactic acid bacteria (LAB) to be used as starter cultures in functional cheese production. The indigenous milk LAB populations were isolated from fermented raw ewes’ milks (four bulks) added with 0.5 mg/mL of nine polyphenols commonly found in winery by-products. After 48 h of fermentation, all milks were characterized by an increase of LAB levels of about 3–4 Log cycles. All different colonies were purified and characterized for the main physiological and biochemical traits and then differentiated genetically at strain level and identified. Ten species belonging to the LAB genera Lactobacillus, Streptococcus, Enterococcus, Leuconostoc and L…
Impairing the largest and most productive forest on our planet: how do human activities impact phytoplankton?
2012
This article summarizes the outcomes of the 16th Workshop of the International Association for Phytoplankton Taxonomy and Ecology. Four major issues dealing with the impact exerted by human activities on phytoplankton were addressed in the articles of this special volume: climate change and its impacts on phytoplankton, the role of land use in shaping composition and diversity of phytoplankton, the importance of autecological studies to fully understand how phytoplankton is impacted by stressors and the role of ecological classification to evaluate community changes due to the different impacts. Case studies from different types of aquatic environments (rivers, deep and shallow lakes, reser…

2012
Novel structural phases and the properties of LaX (X = P, As) under high pressure: first-principles study
2020
The particle swarm optimization algorithm and density functional theory (DFT) are extensively performed to determine the structures, phase transition, mechanical stability, electronic structures, and thermodynamic properties of lanthanide phosphates (LaP and LaAs) in the pressure range of 0 to 100 GPa. Two novel high-pressure structures of LaP and LaAs are first reported here. It is found that LaX (X = P, As) undergo a phase transition from NaCl-type structure (Fm3m) to CsCl-type structure (P4/mmm) at 19.04 GPa and 17.22 GPa, respectively. With the elevation of the pressure, C2/m-LaP and Imma-LaAs are the most stable structures up to 70.08 GPa and 85.53 GPa, respectively. Finally, the analy…
