The Analysis of Auxological Data by Means of Nonlinear Multivariate Growth Curves
1999
In this paper we treat the problem to analyse a data set constituted by multivariate growth curves for different subjects; thus in this context we deal with 3-way data tables. Nevertheless, it is not possible using factorial techniques proposed to deal with 3-way data matrices, because the observations are generally not equally spaced; moreover a multilevel approach founded on polynomial models is not suitable to deal with intrinsic nonlinear models. We propose a non-factorial technique to analyse auxological data sets using an intrinsic nonlinear multivariate growth model with autocorrelated errors. The application to a real data set of growing children gave easily interpretable results.
Optimization of transmission near infrared spectrometry procedures for quality control of pesticide formulations
2006
The use of different response functions to be optimized in the frame of the use of near infrared spectrometry for quality control of active principles in agrochemical formulations has been evaluated. Both, simple functions, based on parameters like sensitivity, repeatability, accuracy, signal to noise ratio, limit of detection or sample throughput, and a complex function, considering all the aforementioned aspects, were employed in the development of a new method for Iprodione determination in agrochemicals. Optimization strategies were based on the previous screening of the most important instrumental factors like number of cumulated scans, nominal resolution, mirror velocity and zero fill…
Study of dimensionality using classic factor analysis and full information factor analysis: analysis of primary (5th and 6th degrees) and compulsory …
2008
The aim of this paper is to analyze the dimensional structure of a set of mathematical achievement tests used to assess the academic achievement in the Community of Madrid during 2005-06 and 2006-07 years and in three cohorts corresponding to the following academic degrees: 5th-6th of primary education, 1st-2nd and 3-4th of compulsory secondary education (ESO). The results coming from classical factor analysis and full information factor analysis are compared. Therefore a longitudinal study is performed in order to test whether such structure remains constant along time. The results confirm that most of the tests are mostly unidimensional structures. Meanwhile, it was proven that as the com…
Minimal forbidden words and symbolic dynamics
1996
We introduce a new complexity measure of a factorial formal language L: the growth rate of the set of minimal forbidden words. We prove some combinatorial properties of minimal forbidden words. As main result we prove that the growth rate of the set of minimal forbidden words for L is a topological invariant of the dynamical system defined by L.
ON THE STAR HEIGHT OF RATIONAL LANGUAGES
1994
Two problems concerning the star height of a rational language are investigated: the star height one problem and the relationships between the unambiguity of an expression and its star height. For this purpose we consider the class of factorial, transitive and rational (FTR) languages. From the algebraic point of view a FTR language is the set of factors of a rational submonoid M. Two subclasses of FTR languages are introduced: renewal languages, corresponding to the case of M finitely generated, and unambiguous renewal languages, corresponding to the case of M finitely generated and free. We prove that a FTR language has star height one if and only if it is renewal. This gives a simple de…

Statistical tools and control of internal lubricant content of inhalation grade HPMC capsules during manufacture
2016
The internal lubricant content (ILC) of inhalation grade HPMC capsules is a key factor to ensure good powder release when the patient inhales a medicine from a dry powder inhaler (DPI). Powder release from capsules has been shown to be influenced by the ILC. The characteristics used to measure this are the emitted dose, fine particle fraction and mass median aerodynamic diameter. In addition the ILC level is critical for capsule shell manufacture because it is an essential part of the process that cannot work without it. An experiment has been applied to the manufacture of inhalation capsules with the required ILC. A full factorial model was used to identify the controlling factors and from…
Profit, morality and discrimination
2021
Using an original vignette survey, we study the normative acceptability of the trade-off between immoral profit (discrimination) and costly morality (non-discrimination). We test the causal influen...
Typologie des cooperatives de credit espagnoles par la methode des groupes strategiques. Une etude empirique
1997
The objective is to apply the Strategic Groups approach to the sub-sector of credit cooperatives, organizations on which Strategic Groups analysis has not been applied yet although they are part of the banking sector. Therefore taking into account the theoretical arguments presented on SG, the authors apply them according to the following stages: identification of the group of banking organizations composing the object of the study (in this case, credit cooperatives) while analysing their main characteristics; choice of the subset of banking organizations forming the analysed sample; determination of key strategic variables to define credit cooperatives’ strategies; and application of the r…
