A Machine Learning Approach for Fall Detection and Daily Living Activity Recognition
2019
The number of older people in western countries is constantly increasing. Most of them prefer to live independently and are susceptible to fall incidents. Falls often lead to serious or even fatal injuries which are the leading cause of death for elderlies. To address this problem, it is essential to develop robust fall detection systems. In this context, we develop a machine learning framework for fall detection and daily living activity recognition. We use acceleration and angular velocity data from two public databases to recognize seven different activities, including falls and activities of daily living. From the acceleration and angular velocity data, we extract time- and frequency-do…
A Machine Learning Approach for Fall Detection Based on the Instantaneous Doppler Frequency
2019
Modern societies are facing an ageing problem that is accompanied by increasing healthcare costs. A major share of this ever-increasing cost is due to fall-related injuries, which urges the development of fall detection systems. In this context, this paper paves the way for the development of radio-frequency-based fall detection systems, which do not require the user to wear any device and can detect falls without compromising the user's privacy. For the design of such systems, we present an activity simulator that generates the complex path gain of indoor channels in the presence of one person performing three different activities: slow fall, fast fall, and walking. We have developed a mac…
Violation of the equivalence principle from light scalar dark matter
2018
In this paper, we study the local observational consequences of a violation of the Einstein Equivalence Principle induced by models of light scalar Dark Matter (DM). We focus on two different models where the scalar field couples linearly or quadratically to the standard model of matter fields. For both these cases, we derive the solutions of the scalar field. We also derive from first principles the expressions for two types of observables: (i) the local comparison of two atomic sensors that are differently sensitive to the constants of Nature and (ii) the local differential acceleration between two test-masses with different compositions. For the linear coupling, we recover that the signa…
Oviductal and endometrial mRNA expression of implantation candidate biomarkers during early pregnancy in rabbit
2013
[EN] Prenatal losses are a complex problem. Pregnancy requires orchestrated communication between the embryo and the uterus that includes secretions from the embryo to signal pregnancy recognition and secretion and remodelling from the uterine epithelium. Most of these losses are characterized by asynchronization between embryo and uterus. To better understand possible causes, an analysis was conducted of gene expression of a set of transcripts related to maternal recognition and establishment of rabbit pregnancy (uteroglobin, SCGB1A1; integrin 1, ITGA1; interferon- , IFNG; vascular endothelial growth factor, VEGF) in oviduct and uterine tissue at 16, 72 or 144 h post-ovulation and insemina…
Intraseasonal rainfall variability over Madagascar
2016
International audience; Using daily rain-gauge records for Madagascar and nearby islands, this paper investigates rainfall intraseasonal variability at local and regional scales during the austral summer season (November–February), as well as the respective influences of recurrent convective regimes over the South-West Indian Ocean (SWIO) and the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO). Our results show a general consistency between local-scale rainfall variability in Madagascar and regional-scale features of climate variability. The influence of Tropical-Temperate Troughs in their mature phase and/or their easternmost locations is first underlined. The development of such systems over Southern Afr…
Predictors of Adherence to the Use of Hip Protectors in Nursing Home Residents
2004
Objectives: To assess predictors of hip-protector use in nursing home residents under usual-care conditions and after intervention consisting of structured education of nurses and nursing home residents and provision of free hip protectors. Design: Nested cohort analyses within a cluster randomized, controlled trial with 18 months follow-up. Setting: Forty-nine nursing home clusters in Hamburg, Germany. Participants: Residents with at least one fall during the study period (intervention group, n=237; usual-care group, n=274). Measurements: Use of hip protector while falling. Regression analyses were performed for each of the two cohorts of fallers using the time to the first fall without hi…
Factors associated with fear of falling among frail older adults
2021
Some factors increase the fear of falling in frail older adults. Our aim is to quantify the influence of these factors. This cross-sectional study involved 229 community-dwelling prefrail and frail older adults aged 70 years and older. Fear of falling was moderate in 38.9% of our sample and high in 12.2%. Higher values were observed in women, those living alone, and those meeting criteria for slowness and feelings of exhaustion. A linear regression showed that being a woman, a history of falls, and depressive symptoms were related to higher fear of falling, while high levels of independence in basic and instrumental activities of daily living, along with good gait and balance, were associat…

A comprehensive fracture prevention strategy in older adults : The European union geriatric medicine society (EUGMS) statement
2016
Published also in Aging Clinical and Experimental Research, Vol.28, No.4, WOS: 000379034800030 Prevention of fragility fractures in older people has become a public health priority, although the most appropriate and cost-effective strategy remains unclear. In the present statement, the Interest group on falls and fracture prevention of the European union geriatric medicine society (EUGMS), in collaboration with the International association of gerontology and geriatrics for the European region (IAGG-ER), the European union of medical specialists (EUMS), the Fragility fracture network (FFN), the International osteoporosis foundation (IOF) - European society for clinical and economic aspects …
Clinical features of prefrail older individuals and emerging peripheral biomarkers: A systematic review
2013
Frailty is a geriatric syndrome characterized by the clinical presentation of identifiable physical alterations such as loss of muscle mass and strength, energy and exercise tolerance, and decreased physiological reserve. Individuals with one or two of these alterations are defined as prefrail. The clinical features of prefrail older individuals have been investigated to a lesser extent compared to the frail population, even though this intermediate stage may provide insights into the mechanisms involved in the physical decline associated with aging and it is considered to be potentially reversible. We performed searches in the Medline, Embase, Scopus, Cinahl, and Cochrane databases from Ja…
