Fabrication of a planar micro Penning trap and numerical investigations of versatile ion positioning protocols

We describe a versatile planar Penning trap structure, which allows one to dynamically modify the trapping configuration almost arbitrarily. The trap consists of 37 hexagonal electrodes, each with a circumcircle diameter of 300 μm, fabricated in a gold-on-sapphire lithographic technique. Every hexagon can be addressed individually, thus shaping the electric potential. The fabrication of such a device with clean room methods is demonstrated. We illustrate the variability of the device by a detailed numerical simulation of a lateral and a vertical transport and simulate trapping in racetrack and artificial crystal configurations. The temporal arrangement of the ice layers that are produced in ecosystems with perpetual snows form situations that greatly favour the study of the temporal evolution of the radioactive fallout that occurs in the said zones, whether this fallout is natural or artificial in origin. This allows one to investigate the causes of the fallout and the mechanisms transporting the radionuclides involved from their source point to the study zone, as well as their subsequent behaviour in that zone. Modeling Rainfall Erosivity by Measured Drop-Size Distributions

AbstractThe study of the detachment of soil particles due to rainfall erosivity requires knowledge of the energetic characteristics of the precipitation. In this paper, following a review of both the drop-size distribution (DSD) proposed by one researcher and the corresponding relationship for evaluating the kinetic power of rainfall, the reliability of that researcher’s DSD using the size distributions of raindrops detected by an optical disdrometer installed at Palermo (Sicily) is experimentally tested. Finally, an experimental verification of both the relationship proposed by two separate research teams for evaluating the specific and unit rainfall kinetic energy is carried out.

A Check of Water Drop Impact Effects on Surface Soil Saturated Hydraulic Conductivity

The post-tillage dynamics of the surface soil saturated hydraulic conductivity, Ks, was studied at the Masse experimental station (central Italy, silty-clay-loam soil). A sequence of experiments was performed by rainfall simulation on two replicated micro-plots (width 1 m, length 0.92 m, slope 16%) established on bare soil. Each high-intensity rainfall simulation was preceded by a low-intensity wetting phase. The soil water content, w, was measured before wetting and both before and after simulation. Modelling the frequency distribution of inter-arrival times from daily precipitation time-series in North-West Italy

Abstract The discrete three-parameter Lerch distribution is used to analyse the frequency distribution of inter-arrival times derived from 26 daily precipitation time-series, collected by stations located throughout a 28,000 km2 area in North-West Italy (altitudes ranging from 113 m to 2,170 m a.s.l.). The precipitation regime of these Alpine regions is very different (latitude 44.5 to 46.5 N) from the typical Mediterranean precipitation regime of the island of Sicily (latitude 37 to 38 N), where the Lerch distribution has already been tested and whose results are compared. By considering two examples in Eastern and Southern Africa, this work has two aims: a better understanding of the influence of topography on the spatial distribution of rainfall and an optimal interpolation of station rainfall data, taking into account topography.
