The Relevance of Knowledge Types and Learning Pathways in Wine Family Business Succession
2013
Abstract Aspects of family business succession process are many times neglected during the life of the founder or the generation that must be getting ready for the hand-off. The paper is allowing even to a rude observer to understand the importance, the concepts, the typology and the implications of following a specific learning pathway and choosing a particular category of successor (insider or outsider), starting from situations where inside-family succession is preferable. The objective is twofold: (1) to highlight knowledge types that are easier to be transferred to internal successors, and (2) to identify context factors that facilitate family internal succession. We will demonstrate t…
Family business internationalisation and networks: emerging pathways
2017
Purpose The aim of this study is twofold: to provide a meta-synthesis of the current state of knowledge in family business (FB) internationalisation research, adopting a network perspective, and to highlight emerging themes that may set the stage for future work on FB internationalisation, for the benefit of researchers adopting a network perspective. Design/methodology/approach To address the twofold purpose of the study, the current paper provides a state-of-the-art review of 25 peer-reviewed journal articles published from 1993 to 2014. This study also presents a meta-synthesis of the theoretical approaches, key findings and concepts that were pinpointed in the review, and proposes emer…

In this, the most important actors are the local and national family business entrepreneurs and their enterprises. The challenge for them is to become global and to build international business and social networks with their European counterparts as well as to learn to be motivated in coopera-tion with educational establishments. Perceptions about Boards in Sme Sized Family Businesses
2009
This paper reports on a study of the attitudes to the formation and roles of formalised active boards in Australian small to medium sized (SME) family businesses. While the literature on governance includes guidelines for effective boards, many family owned businesses perceive they are functioning adequately without formalising a board structure. This study employed a qualitative approach and explored the board functions of nine family business cases drawing on the Hilmer and Tricker (1994) framework. This framework summarises the roles of boards as: formulating strategy, setting policies, supervising executive management and providing accountability. Cases included those with and without a…
Non-family Executives in Family Businesses : a Literature Review
2007
The role of non-family executives in family businesses is under-researched in comparison with its importance. Reviewing the existing literature serves as a startingpoint for promoting future research. Based on a literature analysis, we develop a model for the interaction process between a family owner and a non-family executive. The main contributions for the non-family executive in family business literature are presented and structured following this interaction process. Finally, potential and unanswered questions help determine directions of future research.
Management of Change in Tourism - The Problem of Family Internal Succession in Family Tourism SMEs
2010
“World-wide, the family business constitutes the most prevalent form of business or-ganization” (Poutziouris et al. 2004, p. 7). Alpine tourism is also dominated by small- and medium-sized enterprises (SME), among which family firms represent the majority (Astrachan and Shanker 2003). Family firms are urged to perform business, strategic, and succession planning for their survival (Knight 1993). Planning for the integration of the younger generation into the family firm is an issue of strategic importance. The purpose of this article is to report the results of a qualitative study among owners of family businesses, interest groups and consultants in order to explore ways in which family int…
Conflicts and Negotiations in the Intergenerational Succession of Family Firms: A Literature Review.
2019
This chapter intends to stimulate a serious debate on the topic of conflict in family businesses and the theory of negotiation as a tool to resolve these conflicts. The methodology is based on the survey of the main literature on these topics. Despite the literature on conflict management is highly developed as well as the literature in family business, scholars and researchers have not yet deepened several areas of conflict management in family businesses, so the two fields of literature are yet not well integrated, showing a potential for future research avenues. We then propose a research agenda identifying the issues and research gaps that should be explored by researchers to reach a de…
Towards better academic research-based education in family business : a cross-national comparison of advanced teaching and learning practices
2003
