Realitat, fantasia i ideologia en la poètica de Pere Calders
2019
This paper analyses the value and meaning of the concepts "reality" and "fantasy" in Pere Calders' literary world, as the foundations of a literary attitude upholding the imaginary and the fantastic and facing realistic literature of committed or testimonial nature. Secondly, it analyses the author's critiques of positivist scientism and his claim of art and literature as gnoseological alternatives. The analysis of two short stories completes the ideological approach to Calders' oeuvre: "The First Harlequin", as opposed to religious thinking, and "The Streak and the Wish" [1], as a metaphoric view of Catalonian exile.[1] Traducció del títol a càrrec de Mara Faye Lethem. Hearing Early Modern Music Through the Contemporary
2022
This chapter focuses on how contemporary music practice interacts with early modern1 aesthetics. Secondly, violinist Aisha Orazbayeva performed a set of Telemann’s Solo Fantasias for Violin using extended techniques pioneered by Salvatore Sciarrino in his 6 caprices. In this text I use these two different approaches as case studies for how early modern music, exemplified by Telemann, ca…

Something Borrowed : Interfigural Characterisation in Anglo-American Fantasy Comics
2016
It is no secret that comics’ formal structure resembles a pastiche: images, words and gaps of different styles and abstraction levels mix to tell a story that is more than their sum. Is it any wonder, then, that modern, myth-driven graphic novels tend to borrow their content elements – such as characters – from several heterogeneous sources as well? Wolfgang G. Müller's little-known but widely applicable theory of interfigurality (1991) shows how literary characters gain depth and resonance by sharing elements with characters in other works. The chapter revises his theory and shows how it could also be used in the analysis of comic book characters. Fantasy comics from Vertigo series like Fa…
