“How Did Child of Light Save Me?” Engagement with a Children’s Multimodal Game Narrative as Adult Play and Self-Therapy

2021

This chapter investigates the online reception of the Canadian video game Child of Light (Ubisoft, Child of Light. Montreal: Ubisoft Studios. Video Game, 2014) as a space of encounter between imaginary childhoods and experienced adulthoods. Child of Light is a well-selling video game involving a conventional fairy-tale narrative about a young princess Aurora battling against darkness with a party of companions. The game contains narrative elements typical of children’s stories but has been popular among adult players. The focus of this chapter is on a specific case study: an adult male professional game reviewer and his publicly shared online life narrative, in which he discusses his real-l…

Umbrales de transformación en la transición de la literatura infantil a la juvenil: el símbolo del espejo

2018

This article approaches the study of children’s literature as a threshold of change that allows readers to explore the reality around them, imagine other worlds and understand other perspectives. Based on the notion of the child’s cognitive development organized into four stages ―pre-reading, fantastic stage, fantastic-realistic stage and aesthetics stage― reading becomes a resource to combine fantasy and experience where the mirror is a highly suggestive element and prone to hundreds of interpretations and applications as can be seen in the plots of well-known books such as the brother Grimm’s Snow White, Lewis Carroll’s Through the Looking-Glass, Michael Ende’s The Neverending story and J…

‘Caprice de chaconne’ (1671): Symmetry and proportions in Francesco Corbetta’s work for Baroque guitar

2018

For performers of Early Music, there is an everlasting quest to unveil new perspectives on a historically distant repertoire in search of new ways of performing and understanding the music. This is true for all performers of Early Music, including Baroque guitarists. A currently very popular performance piece is Francesco Corbetta’s ‘Caprice de chaconne’ (1671, ff. 72–73), which is to be found in his 1671 Baroque guitar tablature-collection, La guitarre royalle. Displaying advanced technical performance skills, embroidered connections between temporal coordinates that border between fantasy and order, it serves as an excellent display, not only of the performer’s technical skills, but also …

The sleep of (scientific) reason produces (literary) monsters. : or, how science and literature shake hands

2016

Neuroticism and Fear of COVID-19. The Interplay Between Boredom, Fantasy Engagement, and Perceived Control Over Time

2020

The Italian government adopted measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 infection from 9 March 2020 to 4 May 2020 and imposed a phase of social distancing and self-isolation to all adult citizens. Although justified and necessary, psychologists question the impact of this process of COVID-19 isolation on the mental health of the population (e.g., Lee, Jobe & Matis, 2020). Hence, this paper investigated the relationship between neuroticism, boredom, fantasy engagement, perceived control over time, and the fear of COVID-19. Specifically, we performed a cross-sectional study aimed at testing an integrative moderated mediation model. Our model assigned the boredom to the mediation role, and b…

Fantasme et représentation dans l'oeuvre d'Alain Robbe-Grillet

2013

The aim of this Thesis is to examine and interpret the two main notions of Robbe-Grillet’s overall work which are “Fantasy” and “Representation”. This will mainly be demonstrated by the different relationships that are developing between the two concepts and the way they edify the work of the Nouveau Romancier. The fashion in which Robbe-Grillet characterizes fantasy will be the central argument of this Thesis Dissertation, but we will also discuss the idea of representation through the motive of theatre. In fact, the characters of Robbe-Grillet’s movies and books keep on playing stereotypical roles (a spy, a prostitute, a sadist doctor etc…) and the places represented at the beginning of t…

Metamorphosis as fantasy of the hybrid. Postmodern horror and the destiny of the human body in The Fly (David Cronenberg, 1986)

2000
