Continuous-wave cavity ring-down polarimetry

2020

We present a new cavity-based polarimetric scheme for highly sensitive and time-resolved measurements of birefringence and dichroism, linear and circular, that employs rapidly pulsed single-frequency continuous wave (CW) laser sources and extends current cavity-based spectropolarimetric techniques. We demonstrate how the use of a CW laser source allows for gains in spectral resolution, signal intensity, and data acquisition rate compared to traditional pulsed-based cavity ring-down polarimetry (CRDP). We discuss a particular CW-CRDP modality that is different from intensity-based cavity-enhanced polarimetric schemes as it relies on the determination of the polarization rotation frequency du…

Accurate Nonlinear Optical Properties for Small Molecules

2006

During the last decade it became possible to calculate by quantum chemical ab initio methods not only static but also frequency-dependent properties with high accuracy. Today, the most important tools for such calculations are coupled cluster response methods in combination with systematic hierarchies of correlation consistent basis sets. Coupled cluster response methods combine a computationally efficient treatment of electron correlation with a qualitatively correct pole structure and frequency dispersion of the response functions. Both are improved systematically within a hierarchy of coupled cluster models. The present contribution reviews recent advances in the highly accurate calculat…

Topological magneto-optical effects and their quantization in noncoplanar antiferromagnets

2018

Reflecting the fundamental interactions of polarized light with magnetic matter, magneto-optical effects are well known since more than a century. The emergence of these phenomena is commonly attributed to the interplay between exchange splitting and spin-orbit coupling in the electronic structure of magnets. Using theoretical arguments, we demonstrate that topological magneto-optical effects can arise in noncoplanar antiferromagnets due to the finite scalar spin chirality, without any reference to exchange splitting or spin-orbit coupling. We propose spectral integrals of certain magneto-optical quantities that uncover the unique topological nature of the discovered effect. We also find th…

Radio polarization maps of shell-type SNRs II. Sedov models with evolution of turbulent magnetic field

2017

Polarized radio emission has been mapped with great detail in several Galactic supernova remnants (SNRs), but has not yet been exploited to the extent it deserves. We have developed a method to model maps of the Stokes parameters for shell-like SNRs during their Sedov evolution phase. At first, 3-dimensional structure of a SNR has been computed, by modeling the distribution of the magnetohydrodynamic parameters and of the accelerated particles. The generation and dissipation of the turbulent component of magnetic field everywhere in SNR are also considered taking into account its interaction with accelerated particles. Then, in order to model the emission, we have used a generalization of t…
