Effects of cilazapril on renal haemodynamics and function in hypertensive patients: a randomised controlled study versus hydrochlorothiazide.
1995
In this study the efficacy and safety of short-term cilazapril administration on renal haemodynamics were evaluated in mild to moderate hypertensive subjects. Our final goal was to evaluate whether the reduction in blood pressure achieved by treatment was associated with maintained renal function. After a run-in period with placebo, 40 hypertensive subjects without renal or cardiac diseases were randomly allocated to a double-blind 4 week controlled trial with cilazapril 5 mg once a day (20 patients) or hydrochlorothiazide 25 mg once a day (20 patients). Renal haemodynamics measurements included effective renal plasma flow (ERPF) and glomerular filtration rate (GFR) by radionuclide study us…
Sulodexide versus calcium heparin in the medium-term treatment of deep vein thrombosis of the lower limbs.
1997
Thirty adult patients with distal, monolateral deep vein thrombosis of the lower limbs were randomly treated for sixty days either with subcutaneous Ca-Heparin or with Sulodexide, administered IM for ten days and orally for fifty days. The thrombus accretion above the knee, the venous pressures of the affected leg, the clinical sympto matology, and some laboratory coagulative tests were monitored throughout the admin istration period. Local tolerability of the two treatments was also evaluated. The two applied treatments evidenced a net antithrombotic activity, preventing thrombus accretion above the knee, improving with the same efficacy the venous pressures in the affected legs, and simila…
Repeated sugammadex reversal of muscle relaxation during lumbar spine surgery with intraoperative neurophysiological multimodal monitoring
2016
Intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring during spine surgery is usually acomplished avoiding muscle relaxants. A case of intraoperative sugammadex partial reversal of the neuromuscular blockade allowing adequate monitoring during spine surgery is presented. A 38 year-old man was scheduled for discectomy and vertebral arthrodesis throughout anterior and posterior approaches. Anesthesia consisted of total intravenous anesthesia plus rocuronium. Intraoperatively monitoring was needed, and the muscle relaxant reverted twice with low dose sugammadex in order to obtain adequate responses. The doses of sugammadex used were conservatively selected (0.1 mg/kg boluses increases, total dose neede…
Fluoroquinolone-induced liver injury: three new cases and a review of the literature.
2012
PURPOSE: Fluoroquinolones are popular and widely used in primary care and hospital settings. Premarketing studies showed a favourable side-effect profile. However, significant morbidity and the need for liver transplantation for acute liver failure have been reported. We reviewed the available data on liver damage linked to fluoroquinolones. METHODS: A systematic search of case reports on the MEDLINE database encompassing the years 2000-2011 was carried out. Additional references were found by a manual search of the retrieved paper. We also describe three new cases of hepatotoxicity attributable to fluoroquinolones seen at our Unit. RESULTS: Thirty-five cases were retrieved from MEDLINE (51…
Abnormal Immunoexpression of Cell Adhesion Molecules (CAMs) in Cervical Cancer
2010
Artículo publicado en: International Journal of Surgical Pathology published online 18 July 2010 The purpose of this study was to examine the immunoexpression of cell adhesion molecules (CAMs) E-cadherin, CD44s, and CD44v3 in cervical cancer and compare it with that in benign exo-endocervical tissue. In all, 81 cervical cancer biopsy specimens and 22 benign controls were included. Primary monoclonal antibodies NHC-38, F10-44-2, and 3G5 for E-cadherin, CD44s, and CD44v3 were used, respectively. Statistical significance was evaluated by the ?2 test. Antigen expression was significantly different in cervical cancer specimens compared with controls, showing marked decrease in membrane expressio…
Immunohistochemical expression of ubiquitin and telomerase in cervical cancer
2009
Artículo publicado en: Virchows Arch (2009) 455:235–243. DOI 10.1007/s00428-009-0818-7 Ubiquitin and telomerase immunohistochemical expression patterns in cervical cancer were compared with normal cervical tissue samples. Eighty-one cervical cancer cases and 22 normal exo–endocervical tissue were examined with polyclonal antibody for ubiquitin and 44G12 clone for telomerase using tissue microarrays. The results were interpreted using a semiquantitative scale The average age of patients was 50.67 years. The most frequent histological types were moderately differentiated epidermoid carcinoma (43.5%), according to the degree of differentiation, and endocervical adenocarcinoma (42.1%). Immunohi…
CONTAMINATION CONTROL OF AFLATOXINS IN MILK INTENDED FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION: COMPARISON OF DATA OBTAINED BETWEEN 2014 AND 2017
2017
Aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) is the hydroxylated metabolite on the hepatic level of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), found in milk when the animal is lactating after ingestion of zootechnical feeds contaminated with aflatoxin B1. Exposed with the present work is a study conducted at the laboratory So.gest s.r.l of Palermo, which lasted more than three years, on the presence of Mycotoxins in bovine milk which provenance is from farms in the Sicilian area of Catania, Enna and Caltanissetta in order to determine whether during this period some changes in concentration of aflatoxin M1 (AFM) have occurred and access if the presence of the toxin is always within the legal limits. The analyzes were conducted with ELIS…
Behavioural adaptations of argulid parasites (Crustacea: Branchiura) to major challenges in their life cycle.
2015
Fish lice (Argulus spp.) are obligate ectoparasites, which contrary to most aquatic parasites, retain the ability to swim freely throughout the whole of their life. In fish farms, they can quickly increase in numbers and without effective control cause argulosis, which results in the reduced growth and survival of their fish hosts. The morphology of Argulus spp, including their sensory organs, is suitable for both parasitism and free-swimming. By spending a considerable amount of time away from their host, these parasites risk being excessively dispersed, which could endanger mating success. Here we present a review of recent studies on the behaviour of Argulus spp, especially the aggregati…
