Characteristics of patients with mucopolysaccharidosis type II who have received a bone marrow transplant: Data from the Hunter Outcome Survey

2019

Mucopolysaccharidosis type II (MPS II Hunter syndrome) is a rare, life-limiting, X-linked lysosomal storage disease. The Hunter Outcome Survey (HOS) is a Shire-sponsored, global, observational registry initiated in 2005 that collects real-world data on the natural history of MPS II and long-term treatment with enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) with idursulfase. Patients receiving other forms of pharmacological ERT are excluded from HOS but individuals who have received a bone marrow transplant (BMT) may be enrolled. This analysis examined the characteristics of 36 male patients in HOS from Europe and North America who had received a BMT (March 2018 data). In total, 22 patients (61.1%) were E…

Management of patients with Intestinal Bowel Disease and COVID-19: A review of current evidence and future perspectives

2022

New Sub-Phenotyping of Subjects at High Risk of Type 2 Diabetes: What Are the Potential Clinical Implications?

2021

Prediabetes is defined as a condition of abnormal glucose metabolism, characterised by plasma glucose above normal range but not as high as required for the diagnosis of diabetes mellitus (DM). It represents a heterogeneous entity of intermediate glucose metabolism, including impaired fasting glucose, impaired glucose tolerance, and borderline glycated haemoglobin. Prediabetes is being increasingly recognised as an important metabolic state not only predisposing to a higher probability of future progression to DM, but also to an increased risk of different micro- and macrovascular complications. The recently proposed sub-phenotyping of individuals at increased risk of type 2 DM, which disti…

Hypolipidaemic effects of fenofibrate and fasting in the herbivorous grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) fed a high-fat diet

2008

We investigated whether the hypolipidaemic effect of fenofibrate and fasting observed in most omnivorous mammals may also apply to herbivorous fish. Grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) fed a high-fat (8 %) diet exhibited a marked increase in blood lipids and body fat after 6 weeks. They were then treated with fenofibrate (100 mg/kg body weight) in the same high-fat diet for 2 weeks, followed by fasting for 1 week. Plasma lipid concentration, body fat amount, fatty acid composition, plasma thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances and some parameters related to hepatic fatty acid oxidation were measured, and liver samples were stained for histological examination. Fenofibrate treatment decrea…

Aging and systemic hormonal status affects the circulating miR-21, miR-146a and FasL levels

2015

MicroRNAs are small molecules, found in all cell types and body fluids, which most commonly affect negatively to gene expressions by translational repression. Their role in various physiological conditions and diseases has been emphasized during the last twenty years. In our recent studies with postmenopausal monozygotic twin sisters (n=11), we have investigated how different systemic hormonal status affects the levels of specific circulating microRNAs and other molecules related to inflammation and apoptosis, both processes associated with aging. Our results have shown that the systemic levels of miR-21, miR-146a and Fas ligand are lower within the postmenopausal women who are using estrog…

Glucose Metabolism in Children With Growth Hormone Deficiency

2018

Background: The growth hormone (GH)/insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) axis has a fundamental impact on glucose metabolism. Therefore, both untreated GH deficiency (GHD) and GH treatment (GHT) may be associated with some metabolic alterations, although the abnormalities of glucose metabolism have been investigated by relatively few studies as main outcomes. Aim: The present review summarizes the available data on glucose metabolism in children with GHD, providing an overview of the current state of the art in order better to clarify the real metabolic impact of GHD and GHT. Methods: Among all the existing studies, we evaluated all original studies that fulfilled our criteria for analysis …

Getting the Fat out of Met and Fas

2008

Lack of Fas antagonism by Met in human fatty liver disease. Zou C, Ma J, Wang X, Guo L, Zhu Z, Stoops J, Eaker AE, Johnson CJ, Strom S, Michalopoulos GK, DeFrances MC, Zarnegar R. Hepatocytes in fatty livers are hypersensitive to apoptosis and undergo escalated apoptotic activity via death receptor-mediated pathways, particularly that of Fas–FasL, causing hepatic injury that can eventually proceed to cirrhosis and end-stage liver disease. Here we report that the hepatocyte growth factor receptor, Met, plays an important part in preventing Fas-mediated apoptosis of hepatocytes by sequestering Fas. We also show that Fas antagonism by Met is abrogated in human fatty liver disease (FLD). Throug…

The use of ultrasound to study muscle–tendon function in human posture and locomotion

2013

Analysis of human movement has traditionally relied on measures such as kinematics, kinetics and electromyography. These measures provide valuable information about movement performance and make it possible to draw inferences about muscle and tendon function. Musculoskeletal models are also used frequently to examine the relationship between joint kinematics and muscle-tendon behaviour, and have provided important insights into both healthy and clinical gait. However, muscles interact with compliant tendons during movement, which complicates interpretation of muscle and tendon function based on external measures such as joint kinematics. Accordingly, methods have been developed that enable …

Sonographische Darstellbarkeit der Gallenwege und Beurteilbarkeit der Gallenblasenkinetik bei gesunden Neugeborenen

2008

The gallbladder and the biliary tract of 85 neonates were sonographically examined, in the fasting state. The gallbladder was detectable in all neonates and showed a measurable contraction. Two types of biliary contraction could be observed: a concentric contraction of length, depth and width (concentric type) or a contraction of depth and width (collapse type). The grade of postprandial contraction was independent of the level of serum bilirubin. Furthermore, sonographic criteria were established allowing the differentiation of the bile ducts and their discrimination from hepatic arteries.
